Kinda old news ... but some pix from a West Texas ride. A bit of an eye opener for those who think Texas is nothing but flatland.

This is Amistad Dam on the Texas/Mexico border just north of Del Rio on the Rio Grande River. Amistad Lake is about 40 miles long and up to 7 miles wide.

History too ...

Judge Roy "Law West of the Pecos" Bean and his bar/courthouse, the Jersey Lilly in Langtry, TX, both of which were named after English songstress Lilly Langtry.

mmmm, i thinking of heading out that way in october. where did you stay?

Stayed at the Hotel Limpia in Fort Davis and at Fort Clark Springs in Brackettville and the Comfort Inn/Suites in Fredericksburg.

If you're a history buff, I highly recommend Ft Clark Springs which used to be a calvary post from the mid 1800's up to the end of WW2. Patton was stationed there among other notables. Beautiful spring fed pool (cold as all getout) and lots of historic buildings and a small museum.

We didn't go to Marfa, but the hotel where they hosted Liz Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean, et al for the filming of "Giant" is a great place to stay. Alpine is nice also.

But you definitely want to stay in Ft Davis at least one night if you can.

This is the actual old fort, just about a mile from the hotel @ Ft Davis

Ft Clark

BTW, the original Alamo movie replica (John Wayne, Richard Widmark, Richard Boone, et al) is just outside Bracketville. Worth seeing if you've never been there.

Ft Clark ... Las Moras springs produces several million gallons a day of fresh water. There's a similar set of springs in Del Rio.

On US 90, as you approach Del Rio, you'll come up on Laughlin AFB. This is where the original U-2 base was (back in the Cuban missle crisis days). For many years it has been a training base. If you sit on the highway right of way, these guys will fly overhead on final approach at about 150 feet or so ...

We stopped there too, on the way home from Big Bend. It was New Year's Day, and closed... dang.

The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean is one of my FAVORITE movies. "It may not have been the way it was... but it's the way it shoulda been." :)

leakey_02_92.jpg

leakey_02_128.jpg

we've been through alpine headed to big bend too.

didja get any knick-knacks in f-burg? :D

FYI ... John Wayne wasn't at the real Alamo ... that's the attraction. :wave

Hell, $8.60 seems cheap ... barely a gallon of gas ;)

When were these pictures taken?

As a side note, I spent the summer at Bracketville the year they shot the "real" Alamo movie. Had barbeque with John Wayne, Richard
Widmark, et al out at Happy Shahan's ranch.

Dem were the good 'ol days.
