Need to shorten GS shift lever

I just installed a Wunderlich engine guard and the aftermarket shift lever on my 02 GS is too long. I installed a Wunderlich peg lowering kit and the longer shift lever that came with it hits the guard. I had to cut out 1.25" of the main tube area. I need help in knowing if a butt weld will suffice for the repair, or will some kind of internal insert be needed? I'm assuming the lever is stainless. I have no knowledge on welding. I plan on taking it to a welder Monday.
Thanks,
Doug

I would contact the aftermarket shift lever Manufacturer and tell them the problem. they probaly have a solution. Remember, the more stuff you add or change, the more problems.

good Luck! Bones
