2002 K1200RS-Steering Damper Replacment Tricks

Folks,

My good friend wants to replace the steering damper on his 2002 K1200RS. I briefly looked at it and it wasn't clear how to remove the end of the damper that attaches to the fork brace.

The part in question is #1 in this Fiche.

What wasn't clear was how to remove the bolt #6. Does it pass through the bottom of the fork brace?

So, what is the procedure for replacing it?
Any "gotchas"?
Any "tricks"?

Thanks for any advice.

Best.

Its a Torx T-30. A pain to remove. The PO of my 99 K12RS tried to remove it a chewed it up pretty bad; and since the damper was ok I left it as is. I have heard heating it with a torch might make it easier. Remove the F wheel and make sure the bike is secure before you tackle it.

Good luck!

JP,

Thanks. It sounds like there is locktite on the threads.

Best,
Brook.

My understanding is that YES, there is a threadlock, equal to Red as I recall. Heat, impact wrench, etc. And still some have ended up stripping and having to drill. Good luck.
