R75/6 Tachometer Cable Engine Housing

Good afternoon,
Inspected and removed my tachometer cable from it housing on the left side of the front of the engine. Really could not believe the amount of silicon used to seal it, as I have attached some pictures. My question is hopefully simple enough, in that looking at the parts book, there does not seem to be an o-ring or gasket used in the bottom cable housing to keep it oil tight, or have I missed something?

My r90/6 replacement cable had a plastic piece that filled that window, but no o-ring or seal. The plastic piece completely surrounded the metal end of the tach cable and just the bit that engaged the tach drive protruded.

My understanding of the lack of seal/o-ring is that the idea is the cable is self lubricating from the oil vapors from the engine.
 
I don't recall an o ring. I just replaced mine 6 months ago or so ('75 R75/6). I have no idea why someone would have gooped that up the way they did. Unfortunately, I did not take any pictures of the cable coming out or going in.
 
I'd just run it. Probably some over zealous PO put it on there "just in case". My thought is if it was really leaking, that glob of silicone wouldn't change anything. Besides, it doesn't look like its ever been oily in there.
