2005 R1200RT: Want to run electric power inside the 28L trunk

I want 12V power inside my 28 liter top box / trunk. It's double-walled but would that make it any harder? I figure I could drill a hole near the lower left front so I can run a connector to the bike's rear electrical plug. Now the funny thing is that several people warned me against doing this for fear of breaking some internal latch or hinge.

Has anybody done this? Could you offer me pointers please? Thanks in advance.
 
Oh yeah

I had no issue, just ran a wire (with removable connector both sides) through the bottom of the box from the fuse box (AP1 I think) under the seat. I just advise powering the fuse panel with a relay from a "switched" curcuit so you don't kill the battery by accident. Don't ask how I know!
 
I think the really critical areas not to drill are at the sides of the box where the gears are for the extension. Looking at the inside bottom, I would think it is safe in the bottom corner.

Actually I plan to plug it into the rear Powerlet outlet near the left rear of the seat. That is fused always hot so I can charge a phone or headset while parked. Maybe I should include a little blinking LED to remind me not to leave it too long.

Gears? I was thinking of drilling the hole in the bottom front left corner of the trunk. I hope there are no gears down there.

The gears are for the extension mechanism. Bottom anywhere should be good.
