iPOD Adaptor Cable.....really necessary?

I have a 2012 R1200RT and went to plug in an iPod to the USB and then selected USB under SRC. I am getting nothing and the panel reads NO USB. Do you really have to buy the additional cable to use an iPod? This might sound like a dumb question but I wasn't sure if BMW sold this as a retrofit item.

Thanks,

John

I bought the cable adapter recommended here. Seems to make the connection.

I need help with the instructions on how to use Ian iPod with the audio system on my RT. when I turn on the audio system I do not get the option to select USB or iPod. All that comes on is the tuner. Could someone post the procedures and actions they go through to use their iPod ?

Thanks

I bought the same Amazon cable and after about 2 hours of play it no longer recognizes the ipod. I have to shut the bike and ipod off to reset it. Happens all the time. Wonder if the BMW cable is different
