Handy iPhone mount for R1200 RT

My 2013 R1200 RT came with an audio system which has a USB cord in the storage compartment next to the tank as part of the fairing. This is a short cord which can be used for charging a cell phone, and there are provisions for holding a cell phone in a foam slot at the bottom of this compartment. This is nice, but not terribly handy if you want instant access to your phone for making calls, sending texts, or looking at your map app or compass app. You all pull over and stop anyway, right?

One solution that works nicely for me was to purchase an Otterbox smart phone case - a rugged military-style almost-bullet-proof case. The case is waterproof, will float, and has a touch-screen clear face. I attached a Velcro patch to the back side of it and another on the fuel tank forward of the filler cap. My iPhone 4 sits well-protected in the Otterbox, is very handy - and visible - and the iPhone charging cord plugs into the BMW's USB cord in the storage compartment. The rubber gasket on the door of the compartment is soft and thick which allows the door to be closed on the iPhone cord without damage.

Just another idea which may work for you.

Another option is a combination of RAM Mounts and a modified Lifeproof case bicycle mount.

EDIT: Well, that didn't turn out like I had planned. After about 90 minutes of use, the mount has cracked (and not where the drilled holes are). I may have tightened the screws too much, but I wouldn't have expected this.

Now, thinking about plan B. Probably a RAM X-Grip.
