Smoke/burning smell

Own a 2000 R1000R and noticed was getting harder to turn over. Thought it was battery. Replaced. Then burning smell and smoke from starter. Think I need to replace starter. Anyway to make sure this is the problem.
 
how long did you let it crank before engine would turn over? quite likely you fried the starter or at least began to
