I hate the term "crash bars", so what I would like to find is a set of "engine protection bars" that are made for a 1999 R1100R..
no luck, so far I've found none made for this model...any ideas..?? I just am afraid of bashing stuff up in a "laugh-in" low-no speed tip-over..
all ideas / suggeations appreciated.....thanks......

yes, but........

I'm not sure these are still available.....and the BMW "factory" prices are nuts......I need an aftermarket set-up, please.......

bars

A&SBMW has Z-Technique bars. Touratech makes head protectors. Stanton's are nice, but you'll have to find them used as they are no longer in business. Jon

Z-Technik

According to Z-Technik the engine guards will not work on 2003-2004 models with DUAL SPARK MOTOR, that's the reason why they are not installed on my 2004 R1150RT.
For me they are the best looking guards out there. And you are suppose to be able to take off the cylinder head covers without removing the guards. They also include a bracket for lights or footpegs. It seems they are hoovering at $299. Bikers on other forums had low speed tip over with no damage. Haven't read anything yet about them being in a bad accident. Below you will find the installation PDF for the Z-tech engine guards (Z7105 and Z7101).

Z7101 Installation: http://www.ztechnik.com/ispl/10-117815-000.pdf
Z7101 - Product for 2005/2009 R1200RT, R, ST and GS at http://shop.nationalcycle.com/perl/cycle/Z7101

Z7102 - Product for 2010/current R1200RT, R, ST and GS at http://shop.nationalcycle.com/perl/cycle/Z7102

I have a different bike than you but the fit and finish on the Z-Technik engine guards are very good and they look great too. It's a pain that I have to take them off to get the tupperware off the bike for maint. but that should not be an issue with your model.

+1 on the ZTechnik bars. I have a set on my 1100RT and they are excellent. Nice finish, solid construction and perfect fit.
Does make extra work to get the tupperware on and off but the protection they offer does make up for that I suppose.

That reminds me that i have a spare set of BMW valve cover protectors that fit any 1100 from '94 to '00. Keep forgetting to list those in the flea market. PM me if interested.

Hepco becker makes a nice set.
I have them but don't use them because i have heard disadvantages to doing so.

Z7105 Cylinder Head protectors for 97 R850R

I would really like to get a set of these but there is conflicting information on fitment. A&S has a disclaimer showing they will fit the R850R. Other sites don't list it for fitment. The factory site shows it fits the R1100R but doesn't list the R850R. From what I have read the engines are essentially the same outside. Does anyone know if these bars will fit my machine or is the H&B set the only option?

I put on a set of Heed crash bars earlier this year, and am thoroughly impressed with their design, construction, and value. In my opinion the best. I was using a set of H@B's, and the Heeds are a step up. Heavier tubing, better all around protection, modern design, rock solid comes to mind. Powder Coat finish that is thick and smooth, I can't speak highly enough about them. You might want to give them a look. I have a 96 R1100 GS, so as far as the R1100R, I have no direct info.

Good luck.

John
