Windshield and tools

I am thinking about getting a windshield (one I can take off for local rides) for my 73 R75/5 as I plan on doing some long distance riding this coming year and I cant seem to find anything for bikes older than 74. I am also looking for a suitable toolkit for this model because the original was missing. Would I be better off building my own or are there any suggestions for one off the shelf? I got my bike earlier this year and have been fixing stuff as it was in pretty original condition with 42000 miles on her. I am kinda new to Airheads so any sage advice from you crusty oldtimers would be greatly appreciated.

Buy a new kit

The new kit is available for $137-10 percent for cash from Hucky's 71 11 1 230 685 http://www.bmwhucky.com/007571.html I have put together some and you may save some money but this is the BMW origional and they are good!
or from Vech at Bench Mark Works 71 11 1 230 685--$189.00--tool kit original with vinyl bag 6 wrenches 2 screwdrivers pliers 5 allen wrenches 2 tire tools plug wrench & bar R50/5-R100RT Vech is the best at knowing what you need and how to do it. Worth doing business with just to support his encyclopedic knowledge.
Or FleeBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-Tool-Ki...Parts_Accessories&hash=item564f75474c&vxp=mtr $199 overpriced but with great patina.

They go back to 74 and say they cant recommend one that will properly fit.

Because they don't know what might be different from 73 to 74 for a few hundred different models of motorcycles. But you do or can find out, and the answer as far as a windshield mount goes is "not enough to matter."

Go to the National Cycle (parent of ZTechnik) web site. Look at the Street Shield or the Plexistar II or Plexifairing III.

Look at the blow up pictures. They mount to the handlebars and forks with adjustable mounts. Now think about the differences between a '73 and a '74 BMW - forks and handlebars. Not enough difference between years to worry about.

Just pick the shield you like for a '74. It will fit. I had the same Plexifairing II on an '83 R80ST and '88 K75 and there are hugely more differences there than between a '73 and '74 Airhead.

I had a Plexifairing on my small-frame R65, and later Mary had a Deflector Screen (both National Cycle) on hers. Both were easy to mount and effective. I thought that the Deflector looked better, 'tho of course its coverage envelope is smaller.

In riding behind various screens and on various faired and unfaired bikes, I learned that I like less coverage, and now have a 16" Cee Bailey screen (pretty low, actually) on my R12R. It stays in place all the time.

For the windscreen on a 73 R75/5, here is an older BMWMOA forum post on the subject: http://forums.bmwmoa.org/showthread.php?59721-wife-wants-R75-5-windshield

Givi motorcycles accessories link for screens: http://www.giviusa.com/Screens--spoilers/

For a tool kit, there are several options as mentioned already, here is one from Motobins: http://www.motobins.co.uk/displayfinal.php?q=99980a&go=GO

And the official BMW tool kit from Motobins: http://www.motobins.co.uk/displayfinal.php?q=99984&go=GO

Max BMW is also another source for official BMW toolkits (at a better price than Motobins): http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/PartsSearch.aspx?parts=71 11 1 230 685

Another option is Parabellum , I got a great screen for my 85 R80 .
I'm sure Charley can help you out.

Or try Fairing Screen Gustafson in Fl.
