Throttle tube and gear lubrication (86 R80G/SPD+)

Visian

look out!!!
In upgrading my bike to a set of Renthal fat bars, I have cleaned my throttle assembly thoroughly and am ready to reassemble.

What is the best lubricant to use on the throttle tube and on the gears that actuate the throttle cables.

Thanks!

Ian

spec had been white lithium grease. don't know what "current" thinking is on that lube, there are probably more options now than 35 yrs ago.

Just be sure that what you use is not going to get stiff when cold. Don't need that messing up the smooth throttle action.

As of late, I've been using a light coat of moly spline grease from Guard Dog Moly, and like it pretty well. I used white lithium grease prior to that with no issues. I find that whatever you use, pulling it apart and cleaning/greasing every year or so helps keep the action light.

I use superlube for my throttle tube, gears, and chain assembly. It is a synthetic grease that doesn't get hard when cold or become liquid when hot and is translucent. I like the translucence because it gives a quick indication if dirt is in the grease. Superlube is comparable to lithium grease in lubrication and corrosion protection, but a bit more expensive.
