1150 Cylinder Base Sealant Q

mneblett

#32806
I'm going to pull the left cylinder off an '04 R1150RT-P engine to address a small leak/spreading grime issue at the upper part of the front surface of the cylinder base.

I've been doing a bit of searching to see whether Yamabond is the sealant of choice, but haven't hit on an answer.

So, a little help here/input on the current sealant recommendation, please?

Thanx,

What I have used most recently was Permatex brand Ultra Gray. It is available in many auto parts stores. It is marketed as suitable for aluminum block engines, particularly water pump and oil pump gasketless metal-to-metal seams.

I have also used Yamabond 4 previously.

My opinion is that any non-acidic sealant designed for aluminum that is suitable for petroleum products will work OK.

Thanks, Paul.

The Ultra Gray is what I used on my last couple airhead cylinder jobs; just wasn't sure whether anything better had come along in the last couple years for the oil/hexheads. I actually found it easier to work with than ThreeBond, so unless I hear something else in this thread, that's the way I'll go on this motor.
