2002 1150RT TB adjustment 32K

I've set my valves and am now ready to do TB adjustment. Shouldn't the left cable have a certain amount of slack? I did the adjustment last week but I couldn't seem to get the manometer to be even on both sides. The left hand side had no slack at all. I got all of the surging out of it but I have a vibration at 3200 RPM and no where else. Thanks ahead

Do you have the manual?

13 60 110 Checking freedom of throttle
cable, checking for chafing and
kinks, replacing if necessary Checking
throttle-cable play, checking
and adjusting idle speed and throttle-
valve synchronisation
(Inspections I, II and III)
• Test-drive the motorcycle until the engine is
warm.
• Remove the left side panel.
• Remove the flap in the right side panel.
Oil temperature: ..................at least 90 C (194 F)
• Push back rubber cap (arrow) on throttle and
choke cables.
• Use the adjusting screws to adjust play of throttle
and choke cables.
Choke cable free travel:
........................................approx. 1 mm (0.0393 in)
Throttle cable free travel:
........................................approx. 1 mm (0.0393 in)

• Turn the adjusting screws to adjust the play of
the cables for the left and right throttle valves.
Throttle cable free travel:
....................................... approx. 2 mm (0.0787 in)
• Connect hose of BMW Synchro to vacuum
adapter and connect cables to BMW MoDiTeC.
• Start the engine.
e Attention:
Do not allow the engine to idle for longer than is necessary,
because the trim panels near the exhaust
could be damaged.
• Adjust idle speed by turning the air bypass
screws while checking that the carburettors are
balanced.
Idle speed: ........................................ 1,100 ??50 rpm
L Note:
Make sure that both throttle valves are closed.
e Attention:
Do not tamper with the sealed stop screws of the
throttle valves, as otherwise the idle-speed volume
flow will have to be reset by the manufacturer.
• Carefully turn the adjusting screw of the left throttle
valve and reduce play until the reading of the
Synchro tester changes.
• Turn the adjusting screw very slightly in the opposite
direction until the reading returns to its
original value.
• Tighten the locknut to secure.
L Note:
Make sure that the reading does not change when
you tighten the locknut.
Adjust throttle cable play at throttle valve so that no
play is perceptible, but the throttle valve reliably
contacts the stop screw (no strain on cable).
• Adjust the right throttle valve in the same way.
L Note:
Zero play can cause the throttle valves to rattle.
• Use the adjusting screws (arrow) to adjust play of
the throttle cables.
Play of throttle cable:
.....................................approx. 0.5 mm (0.0197 in)
• Push the rubber cap into position over the adjusting
screw.

OK i got it. Both cables had less than 0 play so after adjusting the BBS's as I went to sync the cables it was changing the BBS setting on the manometer, now all is well.
A question on my other bike, a /6. I have without this knowlege adjusted the factory set throttle valve settings. How might I reset those to the proper location? Thanks for all your help.

A little off tangent....

I've done dozens of TB synchs on just about every oilhead boxer model made... but I've got a question.

On my 2004 R1150RT, there's a hole in the right side body panel specifically for reaching the right BBS. It appears BMW was thoughtful enough to put that there so we could adjust our TBs w/o removing the tupperware.

Unfortunately, (or I'm too stupid) I can't figure out how to reach the vacuum connections with the plastic on the bikes. I removed the cannister shortly after buying the bike, but I still can't reach the nipples. :blush

Is there a way to adjust the TBs with the GS911? (which I also have), or am I missing something?:ear

not at all familiar with using the GS911, but from my understanding, they are an electronic reader. As such, they would be incapable of reading vacuum pressure, which is what you have at those connection ports.
Twinmax or similar.

Yes, I'm aware of Twinmax, been using it for over a decade. I just can't figure out how BMW intended a service technician to adjust the idle with the plastic on.

I'd love to learn how to do it, would make minor adjustments easy.

Yes, i would too. Riding around naked is fine but then seem to"find" a tuning issue a day or two later and just say crap on it, I'm riding!

I have thought about the same question, how to access the vacuum ports on the TB. I thought what the heck, rather than have a plug on it, just extend the port with a short tube and plug it. That is the only way and you only get to mess with the right side BBS.

Mystery still remains

OK, while performing my 24K service, I see where you can reach the
right side vacuum port "nipple" by removing the "foot pad" (see diagram #3). But the
left foot pad is not held on by a screw/bolt. It seems much more "permanent"

It just gets curiouser, and curiouser....
