Restoration Photos and Progress 1932 R4 Series 1

The R4 as of Sept 24th.

Over the weekend, I got the tank back from the pin stripe artist. I have installed it, with the original English type, brass slide blade petcock (which I had to hand make the internal cork sealing disks for) on the tank. After installing the tank, I sat down on this machine for the first time. I discovered that the curved mounting plate that the nose of the seat mounts on, was badly worn out, the bolt hole was a very sloppy fit of the bracket to the 8 mm bolt. I removed the bracket, and drilled the hole out to 9 mm and made a VERY thin walled tube, out of of nylon round stock, on the lathe. I fitted it to the bracket, shoved the nose bolt through, and eliminated the horrible side to side wiggle the seat had. One one problem solved. The top of the tank, as you can see, is BMW emblem blue. Yes, it is supposed to be. The R2 and R4, on the introduction year, had those distinctive blue tops to the tank..
If you look close, you can see the gas cap in the right, and the speedometer on the left, of the top of the tank. Word out of Europe is that my hand made rear fender will be shipped to me in Oct. Cross you fingers!
