Sweepstakes/Superstakes III

$100 raffle tickets? let us know how that works out.

And no I didn't read the 24 rules of entry. 24 rules...really? Keep it simple. People like simple. Rules...not so much.

Not liking the publishers clearing house financial strategy.

Why would I purchase a rally registration I can't use?

+2, can't get out to Sedalia, so why pay for admission to a Rally I can't go to? My chances of winning one of 61 prizes is 0 if I can't afford a $100 ticket. It was fun to think about winning a bike or trip with only $10 on the line, I just don't have $100 to burn, even if the odds are slightly better. Maybe BMW is a rich guys bike afterall........

And yes, I'm one of the guys who won a set of tires the first year, valued at around $400, so even with the 2 tickets I bought last year and didn't win, I'm still way ahead, I get that. I just don't understand the reasoning for making it so over the top. Are we that far in the hole as a club that we need to raise $750,000?

Let's see... new front tire... sweepstakes ticket... ??
:dunno
four tanks of gas and lots of miles seeing the world around me, or a sweepstakes ticket..??
:scratch

looks like the 100 is being spoken for locally... :whistle

This is massive increase that is hard to justify even with the slightly better odds. I also can't get enough time off work to be at the rally traveling from out west so can't take advantage of the rally fee inclusion. Could we have a two-tier pricing next year for rally or not rally? Darn I was looking forward to the sweepstakes...

Hey all.

Let's put this in perspective with some numbers on last year versus this year on just the bikes. Last year the tickets were drawn from a drum and you could win only one prize. Since there were two bikes and we sold just over 18,000 tickets, that means your chance of winning a bike was 2 in 18,000.

Each drawing in this year's Superstakes is independent of the others. Each ticket has an equal chance in each of the 62 drawings. YES, that means that a single ticket can win more than one prize, maybe even all the prizes (extremely unlikely, but possible). If we sell out all 10,000 tickets, for each drawing your chance of winning THAT bike would be 1 in 10,000, but there will be 12 total drawings for a bike so your odds will be 12 in 10,000. My rough math says that is a 10.8 times better chance of winning a bike in 2012 than in 2011.

Is this a massive increase for slightly better odds? If you think so, don't buy a ticket. With only 10,000 tickets and about 34,000 members, we need members who don't want to buy a ticket. If everyone wanted a ticket, we would be 24,000 short. So....Please choose which group you want to be in, the 10,000 who may win a bike or other great prize, or the 24,000 who know for sure that they won't win anything. Your choice, no one demands that you participate.

Your Board of Directors wanted a really big celebration for our 40th. More and better bands, bigger sweepstakes, bigger party. All member benefits. If you can't make the party in Sedalia, I am sorry, but we are doing our best to provide a great experience for our members.

Thanks for your membership in the BMW MOA.

Actually, no. Currently we are in good financial shape. We had rough years in 2008, 9 and 10, but 2011 showed a good turnaround with improved cash flow and positive net income. Another couple of $100,000 would always be nice to fund more and better benefits for our members.

Thanks for your interest.

To some people $500 is pocket change and to others it’s rent, food, or a bit of both. When I decide to gamble (which this is) I choose an amount that I know I can live without. It was fun to purchase a handful of tickets at $10 each and hope. At $100 per ticket, it’s no longer fun for me. Perhaps next time the number of tickets purchased at $100 be limited to one per person--that would seem more fair to me.

Obviously, I was not on the Sweepstakes committee and wasn’t privy to the discussions. I’m sure the committee looked at what the average person spent in the previous two, and made their decisions based on that. I’m sure the committee realized that the $100 per ticket would be too steep of a price for some. Perhaps, I would have made the same decisions. But, it’s just no fun being priced out. I understand the desire of the Board of Directors wanting to have a big celebration, and I know they made a decision they thought was the best. But, I (granted I’m only one of ??34,000) would rather have a smaller celebration that all could enjoy, not a bigger one for only a portion (especially one based on income). I know it wasn’t their intent, but the Sweepstakes feels like a celebration for the richer members of the club, and that’s not right. Nor, was it the intent of the Board of Directors (at least that’s what I assume).

Lastly, I do appreciate all the work the volunteers do for the club, and they deserve to be thanked. Overall, this is just one member’s opinions that I hope will be considered in future decisions.

I am by no means rich. Between mortgage, car and bike payments there is not a lot left over every mont. That said, I like the odds of winning with the $100 ticket. I will find a way to buy one, possibly two. Maybe one or two of the prizes are lifetime memberships.

Last year wife and I made a donation to the MOA Foundation 2011 Challenge fundraising campaign. We believe in the goals of the Foundation and the donation was tax deductable.

This year our donation gets us each multiple chances to win fabulous prizes, rally registration (we go every year possible), and it's tax deductable. Even if we don't win a prize it's for a good cause, the MOA Foundation

The rider training sponsored by the MOA Foundation saves lives! Some of the training is free and some is heavily subsidised by the Foundation. The SuperStakes III is a win for the Foundation and exciting for those members that wish to participate.

Yes, 5 Lifetime Memberships in the prize list!

Tax Deductible!!! I wasn't aware of that. Tell me more.

While I am a retired accounting professor, my area was not tax rather financial reporting. That said, I don't believe this raffle ticket is tax deductable.

My memory tells me that the IRS rule is that if the prize value is greater than the ticket price, there is no deduction. If the prize is worth less, the difference would be deductable. For example, if the prize in the raffle is worth $70 and the ticket price is $100, then $30 would be deductable. This applies to all who purchase a ticket. The prize is taxable to the winner. Since all the prizes in the Superstakes are valued at more than $100 (I believe this is true) there would be no tax deduction available.

This is my belief. If a CPA or other tax specialist is on this thread, please correct me if I am wrong.

Or check with your tax preparer.

Hope this helps.

Jeff, you have been heard. Thanks for your opinion.

Folks, also note that there will be the usual MOA door prize bike awarded at the Saturday closing ceremony with your ticket paid for with your entry fee to the rally.

We buy 2 or 3 raffle tickets from various foundations each year. So far my tax preparer has taken deductions. I'm no tax expert, CHECK with your professional.

Hey, I'm buying a ticket. The odds are massively good. But, if I don't win it's for a good cause. I'm sure over a year's time I've dropped more than that on the state lottery (two bucks a week in the office pool) at odds which make getting repeatedly hit by lightning look like a sure thing. Or, it's the money I saved giving up smoking. I'm even sure I've got enough BMW and KLR parts sitting around collecting dust in my garage that I could buy several tickets and clear up the clutter. (anyone wanna buy one of those red, white and green Dainese-made BMW suits? No, didn't think so. ) In Central Illinois my company backs a 100-dollar-a-ticket
raffle on a new home. Value: $250-thousand dollars. The money goes to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. I've never won a house either, but again, it's a good cause...and I didn't even get into a motorcycle rally as a side benefit....

I'm in for one or several. I like the increased odds and the rally fee being included.

To the BOD:
Keep up the good work! :clap:clap:clap
