Glacier NP Hotels/Lodges where to stay?

Hi all,
Has anyone stayed in Glacier NP at the Hotels or Lodges? I'm planning the 2012 trips and would like a place that I can do rafting and hiking. There are so many choices on their web site and instead of just picking one I thought I'd ask.
Thanks,
Robert

Mary and I stayed at the Lake McDonald lodge last fall, the last week before they closed for the winter. It was swell. If you've ever stayed in a big old park lodge before, like the Lake Quinault Lodge in the Olympics - it's just like that.

Whatever "that" is, we like it. We have reservations at Many Glacier for mid-June 2012.

We stayed in Apgar village in West Glacier in the log cabins along the creek. Seems like $85 US a night. My brother stayed a few hundred yards away in the lakeview motel. They were way more$$
One of the rafting companies was up the road toward the entrance about a mile.

On my many trips to Glacier this is where the Mrs. & I stay...bridgestreetcottages.com/

It is outside the park to the south, in a great area. Gives me a good 'base' to do many day tours. Probably at the upper end on the $$$ scale, but this is our spoils when we are in MT.

I'm not associated with these folks at all! They just have a nice product that i'm happy to share with other riders.

Check out Badrock Bed & Breakfast - http://badrock.com/
I know the owners Mark and Serena Jackson, their son was in the Boy Scout troop I used to be a ASM for. Wonderful people! It's about 20 minutes from Glacier.

One of our favourite places, in Essex Montana:

And the Marias Pass (Highway 2) is fun to ride.

Been to almost all the hotels. Most serious hikers stay at Many Glaciers Hotel. They just finished rehabbing it this year. It is the best jump off place for some of the good trails. Can watch wildlife from hotel porch (grizzlies, moose, etc). Very good food. In my opinion, it is one of the best options. Great lobby with fireplace. Great for relaxing after a day hike.

The nicest hotel is Glacier Park Lodge in East Glacier. But, it is far away from hiking. Spectacular lobby.

Prince of Wales of overpriced and small rooms. Stayed there once. Will not go back.

Here is the link for info, Pricing, and reservations for the in-park hotels: http://www.glacierparkinc.com/
For Chalets inside the park (reservations are difficult to get): http://www.graniteparkchalet.com/
For cabins outside park (often w/o electric or plumbing): http://www.montanacabins.net/

Hotels in the park provide a great experience. Reservations must be done in the Winter. Chalets are almost impossible to get reservations. Already booked for next year. Cabins are often available on short notice. There are some other motels and hotels outside the park.

Snow can be an issue early in the year. I have hiked there in June twice. Last year, the hotels didn't open until mid-July last year due to the snow. So beware if you book in June.

The 3 great day hikes on trails:
Highline Trail from Logan Pass to Granite Park Chalet
Iceburg Lake from Many Glacier Hotel
Grinnell Glacier (take boats)

Good Off trail hikes:
Obelin Mtn
Dragon's Tail
Floral Park Route

Good Backcountry Hikes (need permit)
North Loop
Hole-in-the-Wall from Kintla Lake to Goat Haunt

On the Canadian side (need eLicence, passport, passport card):
Crypt Lake http://www.watertoncruise.com/crypt-lake.php

Worth purchasing bear spray. Lots of grizzlies out there. They are not docile like black bears.

Best map is Nat Geo maps. Like Vicki Springs book. Falcon also has a good guide.

I am planning on a backcountry hike next September. If you need more info, let me know.

Big Fork

Big Fork, Montana is a very cool town on the NE edge of Flathead Lake and about 40 minutes from the west entrance of Glacier. There are a number of good places to stay and excellent dining and coffee shops. We stayed at the Timbers Motel and really liked it. Rooms have entrance facing the parking lot to easy access to the bikes.

The Bridge Street Cottages look like this from the outside; they're quite new. The insides are yummy.
