Huge Hwy 14 Cedar City Landslide !!!

There was a huge landslide on Hwy 14 this weekend just up Cedar Canyon from Cedar City. We were all there for the BMW MOA Fall Colors just a few weekends ago!

Here's a link to an article and photos but frankly the photos don't do it justice based on other photos I've seen on Facebook. From the FB photos it looks like at least 1/4 mile or so of the canyon road is completely washed away by several hundred feet down the hill; it's not just a matter of debris falling on the road.

With snow already on the ground it's going to be tough job to reopen it by Spring.

Here's the link:

You may be able to see better photos if you find my FB page.

mods: I don't know where this belongs on the forum so move it as you see fit! Thanks!

Great Road. . .

WOW! Been on this one many times, and glad I wasn't on it when this happened. Yikes!

For those who have never been to Cedar City and Hwy 14 - when it gets re-opened, just do it. . .

S.R. 14 Landslide Repair

Traffic Impact:

State Route 14 (S.R. 14) is impassable between Cedar City and Cedar Breaks National Monument due to a landslide that displaced the original road.
The road closure extends from milepost 5 to the S.R. 148 Junction.
The road will remain closed until early Summer 2012.
Wood's Ranch, Webster Flat and Duck Creek Village are accessible from the east side of S.R. 14.

Project Schedule:

Aerial survey data was collected last week and is currently being analyzed to get an accurate evaluation of the extent of the slide and to provide measurable points for re-engineering the road. This data aids in determining types of repair and estimating general costs.

Beginning November 1st, UDOT will post project information for contractors on the Project Explorer web page.

UDOT anticipates selecting a contractor prior to the end of November.

Construction may extend into June 2012.

Project Overview:

This project replaces a section of state Route 14 affected by a landslide. Basic elements of this project include stabilizing slopes, moving earth and debris, and constructing a new road.
Adjacent tourist destinations are accessible via alternate routes.
Over the winter months UDOT will continue snow removal on state Route 14 from U.S. 89 to Navajo Lake.

Looks like a new road needs to built right over the landslide. Add some curves and new elevation changes and it may even be better!

Update:

UT 14 will be open now after 24 May 2012 , Nights and weekends till the fix is complete. Dirt for now, but better than going the long way around.

"The dirt road will open 3 p.m. Thursday, May 24, and will remain open through the long weekend. After that, it will close from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on most weekdays, and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays, until the fix is complete"

I sure am glad this thread popped back up, as I am plannign my route to the BMW RA rally & was planning on traveling Hwy 14. Good excuse to detour through Zion!

Seems like this road in Utah just does not want to stay clear of rocks and boulders!

It was completely repaired this past summer and now that winter weather has set in, scenic items are resting again on the road!

Rock fall damages SR-14 again, but road remains open
December 11, 2012

CEDAR CITY ÔÇö A rock fall on SR-14 temporarily shut down the road Monday night, roughly six months after a much more serious rockslide closed it down for several months.

UDOT spokesperson John Gleason said that changing temperatures and repeated expansion of rocks were likely the cause of the fall near mile post 8.

The rock fall occurred around 5 p.m. Monday, but the road was opened for two way traffic by 9:30 p.m.

Gleason said two large boulders roughly the size of SUVs still remain in the road. UDOT crews intend to use explosives to blow them out at some point Tuesday.

Gleason said that while traffic was moving, removing the boulders would delay traffic about 15 minutes.

UDOT crews will also repair some diverting and cracking in the road caused by the rock fall.

A rock slide in the same area of SR-14 caused much more serious damage and shut down the road from October 2011 to May 2012.
