Tent spaces

2bikemike

I had a similar experience in Johnson City when a woman from the CMA told me I was not welcome to pitch my tent where I stopped unless I had accepted jesus as my personal savior.

It was so completely unchristian of her I just moved on. No sense arguing with that sort. I ended up with a bunch of Darwinists and had a wonderful time! :wave

Be sure to introduce her to 2bilemike; they deserve each other.

which is exaclty why i purchase a sherpa tent. my spot is there, there is a a nice big shade area, i dont have to haul it, or set up/take down.

yeap i pay for it. I did find the sleeping bags useless, lol

I do however think saving a ton of sites rediculous. if you need to save a spot, put your bike on it.

I can see saving a spot for a buddy a few hours back, or a spouse, but sure, I understand a good thing can be over done, which probably prompted the rule in the first place.

We loved the "Club Camping" area. We have a large club with members in nearly all 49 states. The MOA rally is one of the few ways for us to get together once a year.

There were over 60 YBs camping at the rally and another 40 "wimps" at the dorms or hotels.

The club camping area seems to put an end to a lot of the tent space saving situation.....:thumb

Another good reason to join and support your local MOA chartered clubs...

Different

So what makes you any different? He is intolerant, as are you. You deserve each other.

What makes me different is that I don't give a rip where you fall on the political spectrum, the religious scale, or the sexual preference spectrum. I will tell those, who condemn others for what they are or believe, that they are bigots and need to examine their selves. As for tolerating those who engage in the name calling and random bigotry, I grew up with those kinds of people and I choose to no longer stay silent when they start their crap.

There was plenty of room on the infield. And I'll also point out that we had outsiders (R-bikes, K-bikes, and other brands) infiltrate the GS camping area and we welcomed them....and shared out beer!

Can't we all just get along??? :hug

i'm new here but...

this seems like the perfect spot for some good old fashioned courtesy and politeness, and perhaps some common sense and good neighbor practises as well.

when i rolled into the fairgrounds at Bloomsburg on Tuesday, i went right to the volunteer coordinators, who were all standing out back of the volunteer center (closest to the gate). after a short conversation, it was mutually decided i should go set up then check back in. now, i happened to be addressing one of the top rally chairs/volunteer coordinators, but i specifically asked if there were any restrictions on where i should set up? to which she replied, anywhere you like, as long it there are no signs saying "no camping". one look at the *group* camping area and it was quite obvious that solo operators such as myself had no business setting up there, so i rode all over the place before choosing a spot.

now IMO, if you are going to attempt to *save* a spot for a buddy or whatever, let's hope like heck that your friend is going to be WAY ahead of 99.5% of all other campers. i find it ludicrous that anyone might try to save a spot for someone who isn't going to come in maybe Wednesday at the latest, because the first ones in get the more prime spots and then everyone else fills in the gaps.

HOWEVER, if one wants to set up in an obviously sweet spot, then when everyone/anyone else comes in why not just ask politely if they might be able to allow some space for perhaps a single tent... why wouldn't anyone in their right mind accommodate that request? later, if the person never shows, there is still some space for somebody or perhaps a spot for a community hang-out. call me silly- it seems simply a matter of introducing oneself and then posing the question in a nice manner that welcomes all into the scenario. either person getting nasty about it and having a little snit :fight seems a lousy way to begin a week or a few days together.

it ain't rocket surgery folks.

i dunno,
maybe i'm asking too much here, call me an old-fashioned neighbor. :wave

PS,
maybe the guy who had the Jesus trip laid on him happened to be in the group area, and perhaps right beside the christian crew?
just a guess- it's a long-shot i know.... :dunno

Actually I was pretty much in the middle of the field on the first day of the rally, a good 30 yards from the shade where she had been lounging. She had to heave herself out of her camping chair and walk over to me. No markings, no plastic ribbon, and also no greeting, just the inquisition. The sort of stuff Voltaire loved so much in his lifetime.

On the ride back to Vermont I was hot, tired, and very thirsty when I spotted a revival tent set up behind a rural church. I stopped to ask for water and instead was greeted as kin, fed, given soda, had my saddlebags packed with snacks and fluids. This despite the fact that I am a godless secular humanist.

The CMA lady treated me like some sort of unclean object. The little church treated me like a human being. Guess which one left me with warm fuzzies.

Hi, Kevin,
I find it offensive for ANYONE to try to save ANY space for someone who isn't there yet. I was at the Flagstaff rally in 1991. I arrived Wednesday evening and, when I thought I'd found a camping spot, I was informed that "All these spots are reserved for the Detroit Touring Club" and at the next nice spot, "All these are reserved for the Chicago club," etc. I finally pitched my tent away from everyone, far from where campfires were permitted. After my experience there, I wanted nothing to do with BMWMOA rallys and didn't attend one until Rhinebeck in 1999. The rule should be hard and fast, NO SAVING SPACES FOR ANYONE! Anyone who attempts to save a space should first be asked to remove the tape, etc., and if (s)he persists, should be escorted from the camping area. There should be NO reserved areas except for special needs (cpap, etc.) or the Sherpa Mayberry area. That's my $.02.

Okay then I agree NO SAVING SPACES !!! That goes for the clubs that are out there also !!! Screw saving spaces period !!! First come , first served !!! There I am an official ARSE hole :wave

so much for THAT theory :scratch

just when you get to thinkin *they're ALL the same*... i actually love little things like that which serve to restore some smidgeon of faith in humankind... something we all need every so often in life, methinks.

in Tennessee,
too bad you didn't whip out your pistol and a bottle of Jack, shoot the top off the bottle with a loud war whoop, take a big swig of the liquor then spit out broken glass and blood and whisky
and shout at the top of your lungs, H*** F****** YES I LOVES ME SOME JESUS BAYBAYYYYYYY.

THAT could have been priceless.

cheers. (and pass me them snakes)
Tom

Actually, setting aside one small area for clubs to camp together was specifically intended to prevent clubs and other groups from trying to do it all over the place.

You spend 3 or 4 rallys at the rent-atent guys and you spent enough to buy your own NEW tent.:scratch

Then who would provide hundreds of gallons of ice water (and coffee and shade and...)

A significant number (likely the vast majority) of my customers already have their own gear. But, that's not really the point of this service.

Last week was a hot one. Record breaking ice usage, 938 lbs consumed in the Sherpa camp.

And, with low temps at best 74 (some nights didn't get below 80), the sleeping bags were just about ornamental in nature.

hey man i for one, don't doubt the value of your service. it absolutely saves folks from having heavily laden bikes on their journeys from home. the convenience of it is NOT to be understated or taken for granted.

i went to a BSA International Rally on the Isle of Man a few years back, and somebody there provided pre-set tents for folks like you do. some of us rolled off the Ferry (from Liverpool) at MIDNIGHT in the pouring rain. i was lucky and managed to follow some folks who rode directly to camp- only a couple miles from downtown Douglas. some however weren't so lucky and got spun out, wound up riding around the island before finally finding camp. at least one couple i know had a tent reserved. imagine their relief at simply getting into a pre-set tent and having a dry space to sleep that night.
i wound up rolling out in the Grand Marquee (big circus tent) on the stage that night and setting camp in daylight the following day.

for those who purchase your services, i am QUITE certain it's totally worth it.
in all regards.

Outsiders? Why is there a special place for GS in the first place?

There was plenty of room on the infield. And I'll also point out that we had outsiders (R-bikes, K-bikes, and other brands) infiltrate the GS camping area and we welcomed them....and shared out beer!

Outsiders? Since when are GS riders considered special? Why not have your own rally in the Mohave Desert? Might not work as most GS riders have not been on unpaved roads.

1. Outsiders, probably not the best chosen word, but don't be so thin skinned.

2. We have always been special, ask our mums.

3. Good idea, but we'll still be at the Big Party.

4. True of most, come party of tarmac with us though.

You are invited to our little party, we'll be camped next to the GS competition track we are building.

Seems a little harsh. The GS Giants had a camp in the infield as part of the GS Giant competition. There were a few RS's, K's, RT's and even CLEAN GS's, parked out there as well. We were not at all exclusive and welcomed everyone. Heck, we even shared our beer.

Special? Yea, there are a few I would classify as "special" :brad but good solid, welcoming folks, all. Before you judge too harshly, please stop by and join the fun.

Special?

Who would even ask! We're NOT created equal,as in Airhead Central, The K Owners group, GSGiants, The Ambassadors and who knows all else gather in similar fashion. Join one, my friend, stop cry'in. I happen to love the GSGiants and figure to camp with'em when on my GSA. My Airhead gets another part of me active. If you're solo and want to be, thats always fine too, just don't get into trouble picking fights where none's needed:). Group camping has always been the norm, just in certain areas pre determined at rallies. Find 'em, be happy with all your pals. Randy:thumb

Who wants me to save them a spot?

I will be one of the early arrivals and I can save you a spot. You need to know the following;
1. I snore
2. I drink
3. I smoke cigars
4. I get up early
5. Did i mention I drink?
6. Chicks dig me.
