Thanks! I'm planning a road trip in the US and the Black Hills, Deadwood etc. are on my list. I'll take a good look at your notes to make a nice route. Great stuff!

Rode to Sturgis from Ct a few years back. Went across the top of Lake Superior and hung a right. Dropped south around Eagle Butte, ND. Did the Black Hills, Deadwood, etc. God's country.

Coming back we wound up in Duluth about midnite. We'd ridden thru wind, rain, and crippled deer crawling off back roads. For lack of a choice, we stayed in a run-down hotel populated by alky's and druggies, where a cop had been recently attacked. The room was dry, clean, and we were treated well. Turned out to be a pretty good trip.

You should experience it in the winter. Yes one can ride year round out there. Famous for it's Chinook winds

..or like most most tourists don't bother to stop by...

..and observe a small bit of history.

Best time to go is late spring - early summer. Less congestion. Have the place all to yourself.:beer

Was assigned to DW in my last year..was also the base M/C Safety Officer..might have met you.

I took the M/C safety course in the late summer, early fall of 1983. The head instructor was a Captain, some what short in height, on what appeared to be a much too large GW. At the end of the course he told me I had acheived a perfect score, but he just had to dock me 5 points because he just couldn't allow a perfect score.

That wouldn't have been you would it?

I've visited the website, but not been to the actual site. If I'm ever passing through SD, I plan to stop there.... along with a visit to Wall Drug, because trip through South Dakota without a stop at Wall Drug doesn't count.

No..rode a CB900C at the time..then traded it on an new (at the time)'83 H-D FXWG

When I was at the Gillette Rally I made it a point to stop in. Was told the tour was full..but had special admission to get in 'cause of being a Combat Crew member. The Park Ranger knew his facts!
