Here it is winter in what I call the 2010-2011 season. I have a pile of snow stacked on the front lawn the size of a city bus. Time to put another log in the wood stove and watch a movie. I'll start out with one of my favorites... Almost Famous. It is a great story of a budding rock journalist who ends up on the road with a rock band. Great movie, great soundtrack. Here's the trailer........

Enjoy, Gary

Just getting around to seeing Jerry Mcguire......

I never went in for the hype when it came out on the big screen. Now it is on Bravo and my first screening. I can see why it was a hit in the day. 1996, Am I that old? wow!

Went and saw "True Grit" a couple weeks ago...very good!

And last night we watched, "The Social Network"...which was much better than I expected.

"The King's Speech" Brilliant in every way.

Another vote for "The King's Speech."

When family visits my folks, my mom wants to go out. My dad isn't necessarily a big going out sort of guy, except for dinner. So, my mom wants to go do something and that's usually turned into a movie. Grandkids usually determine what movie it will be and even though all grandkids are grown, their preference is still an action movie of some sort -- chase scenes and crashes. Frankly, even when grandkids aren't going that's usually what I take her to as well. [Incidentally, she liked "World's Fastest Indian."]

This Christmas visit I knew nothing about The King's Speech, but I picked it because in a rare selfless moment I thought it might get away from chase scenes and crashes. We were blown away! It's quite the movie! Along with the comments above it gets a thumbs up from me (and my mom).

Interestingly, the audience where we saw it (Tucson, late afternoon showing) was distinctly old. I don't know how that affects awards, but it gets my personal award.

PS on King's Speech(R)

BTW, we took our twelve year-old son and he loved it too. He's developed an interest in WWII as a result of playing video games. The thing gets an R rating because the King, in one scene, repeats the "F-bomb" several times. It's both a hilarious and touching moment.

Black Swan - an amazing film. I think Natalie Portman's performance is perfect.

Voni, Can't find this on netflix, or online. How or where did you come across this? How did you see the movie? Sounds like something Donna and I would enjoy!

We watched the 3 disc set of Pillars of The Earth, based on the Ken Follet novel. It was a pretty good portrayal of the book.

Temple Grandin. This is the story of an autistic child that was encouraged to be all that she could be. Clair Danes transformation as Temple is extraordinary. An excellent film all the way around.

Up in the Air. Interesting story about firing and getting fired in the new age.
