2011 international rally

First off. Kudos on the Recon Mission.
Unfortunately I only saw 14 (+-) trees.
Those spots will be gone by Monday night.

I may as well stay in Washington, "The Evergreen State" if I want treed camping. :banghead

You're right....this is camping:

(you may recognize this pic as part of your great state!!)

As much as I love camping, at a rally (especially a National) ...you're not "camping"...you're sleeping in a tent. When I want to camp, I go to a National/State forest, and enjoy solitude and an outdoor/nature experience.

When I go to a rally, I sleep in a tent, and enjoy interacting with my friends and motorcycling "family", visiting vendors, and attending seminars. :thumb

If you rode/drove to your spot... You ain't campin'...
Regardless... I agree with your points.
Just add some trees.
Maybe I'll bring my own!

Problem solved! :rofl

Great Idea!!!:dance When Deb and I were rally chairs in Gillette....the standard line was BYOS (bring your own shade:brad

+1 to Karol's post above-

Shade is cool- show me a spot that has enough for 8,000 tents.

This is a great point in favor of smaller, local rallies and state or national parks you can stop at on your way. Very difficult to achieve at a rally the size of ours-

:type

BTW, great pics- I lived in WA for ten years, camped out everywhere, loved it! And I sure miss those huge evergreens-

Dude - it's the East Coast. They mowed down all their forests a century ago. That's why we live in the Evergreen State. We like trees!

Better let 'em know that you feel that way- Gold Bar is a logging town, the trees won't last long.

Go look at the other side of that hill- lumber companies are sneaky, they clear-cut the stuff you can't see, first.

Maine has the most forested cover, followed by New Hampshire :)

Slim Shady .............shaky shaky

Hey all: So Statdawg, are you telling us that there isn't any trees on the site, and that to have shade we should set up camp in side a barn? Sounds like fun!! Vaya con Dios, Dutch

No you are, we have enough trees to be a tiny green MOA rally. :dunno

Very true, they will be gone. But come early be like the RIPs ( retired important persons ).

So does Pennsylvania, its Penns Woods and we manage our forest so we don't have to wipe with an owl. :laugh

Dude, where is my shade ?

Some teacher who is off all summer or retiree stole it. :violin

Dude it is a fairground just like all the other MOA venues have been. Its a not some concrete convention center, college campus, or state or national park.

The Bloomsburg fairground is designed to support and exhibit agriculture and celebrate the Pennsylvania's 58,000 farms (occupying nearly 8 million acres) that are the backbone of the state's economy producing a wide variety of crops. The leading commodities are dairy products, cattle and calves, mushrooms, greenhouse and nursery products, poultry and eggs, a variety of fruits, sweet corn, potatoes, maple syrup, and Christmas trees. Pennsylvania is ranked 6th in USA farm production, it has a nation-leading farmland preservation program and prior to western expansion it was the bread basket of America so much that the English tried destroying the upper Susquehanna Valley to starve the insurgents and discenters that made a land for the ship steerage to come.

The Bloomburg Fairgrounds host the largest fair in the state with 80,000 visitors a day that want commercial vendors to provide goods and services. Huge farm implements are brought in to be displayed so their presence is another excuse. Dude we can't have enough shade for all the expected 20 % of the MOA at the 4 day event unless our numbers drop some more. :p

And dude the infield at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds is a half mile track. It hosted a NASCAR race and Sprint races, major league and Negro league baseball games, a prize fight and many concerts so I think thats shadeless due to the fact ticket holders don't want to pay for obstructed views.

But Dude really why the need for shade ? Are you going to be exhausted riding across the nations shadeless slab, deserts of the Pac West, the great plains and expect to bath in the rarity here ? What do you need shade for ? Let me guess its for cooling your tent. But DUDE what about the 60 - 90 % humidity that is common in mid-Atlantic America in July have you thought about that ? Dude its damp here kinda like the Pac West because we have a forest and have many wetlands.

So back to the Fairgrounds and its shade.

Gate 5 is lined with trees so come early so you can be on busy Park Avenue, enjoy the rally goers who stay up till 1AM and the next group tags them by getting up a 5 AM. But its shade, Dude. Do you need ear plugs too ?

Looks like more than 14 trees here

Next big shade plot is next to the leased barns right upwind of pure horse crap. How about that Dude ? However this is a leased area so I don't think they will want a motorcycle pannier next to their animals they might think its a feeding trough..

It looks like the trees are growing, are we close to twenty yet ?

You might wish to leave this grouping for the RVers.

Or how about going to the north end of the campus and enjoy the shade near the big concrete pad that supports the farris wheel during fair week. But it could be used for ERC training and there is space for Demo Rides. So dude there is a place you can watch others ride, instead of taking a cool ride in our non-volcanic mountains.

Bring a chainsaw its starting to look like a forest.

The next tree is near the main office but usually there are garbage cans there since its close to the exhibit halls.

If you bring a bivy bag you can line yourself up with a flag pole shade.

The best place for shade is on both sides of the old school but Pennsylvania historical preservation may not allow a tent peg there despite its a short kidney stone throw to the restrooms.

There are plenty of tall buildings that cast long shadows so there is an option but bring your dehumidifier..

Yeah the site selection sucked just like all the other slim shady MOA venues that can only provide enough shade for the dedicated volunteers that come early to set up. How about that dude ? How about coming early or is it too shadeless far to attend ?

As far as trees and forest, Pennsylvania has 16 million acres of forest and it was the adult home of Gifford Pinchot, the first forester in America. His residence is not far from the rally site and it has plenty shade because its not an MOA rally site nor a fairground.

Very true, they [the mini-green spots] will be gone. But come early be like the RIPs ( retired important persons ).

I would...
Alas, I'm not retired. I still have to work for a living.

If I do come and being Pennsylvania... I'll get a hotel. If only for the humidity.
I'm an ex E.Coaster... Humidity at those levels suck. Nice bed... Evening shower...
Fine by me.

(sure am glad I didn't call you dude.)
:bolt

Go look at the other side of that hill- lumber companies are sneaky, they clear-cut the stuff you can't see, first.

Actually...

Gold Bar started as a prospectors camp in 1889, named by a miner who found traces of gold on a river gravel bar. After Gold Bar became a construction camp for the Great Northern Railway, anti-Chinese sentiment was inflamed by a shooting fray started by disreputable camp followers. To save the lives of the threatened Chinese, construction engineer Eduard Bauer slipped them out of camp in hastily-constructed coffins. Gold Bar was officially incorporated on September 16, 1910.

...And the Forest Service is 'sneakier'.

Don't fear, come back.

So it really wasn't about the shade availability after all ?

You could call me I am in the A-Book ( :wave ). I have everything to serve any over land traveler needs except for porn and religion. But we did have three weddings on my property. I would even field a nice 3 AM chit chat but be mindful I no longer have a loud house phone, nor a cell phone, nor a answering service so conversation availability is limited.

Its long off but I may have offered you a shaded place on my 88 acre farm that provides 5 different scenic ways to get there. But then again maybe it should be offered to the largest and most active club in New England.

I will agree about the humidity but its only 60-80 % on average and lower than Baltimore, Boston, New York City and Philadelphia. In this part of Pennsylvania its the luck of the draw. Last years July it rained 3 days a week, this year we are 5-8 inches below normal precipitation with long periods of heat. We did have some nice cooler days for riding and I am looking for the right religious soul who can give the MOA the gift of cool summer days as far as the eye can see and update my A-Book listing.

Things are looking better already so come east employed man.
