This is from the middle of last month heading towards the /5's get together at Seneca Rocks. I got bored Wednesday afternoon and decided to go ahead and leave a couple days in advanced and start heading east. Took 34 down and made a stop over at my sis's in Scott Depot to say goodbye, she's headed out the following day to Mississippi for a bit of military 'office' training for a month+. From there, I jumped on 60 (i love that rode) and hung a left at Hico aimed for Summersville Lake off 19 to bed down for the evening. I was hoping to take a dip in the lake but it was goofy crowded and I didn't feel like dealing with anyone so I scouted out the camp situation. Everywhere around the lake looked like a 3 ring circus, so I decided to dunk down by the Gauley River and see what's up. Much to my surprise, there's free camping at the end of the road by the dam with a hand full of fifth wheels. I found a spot, threw up the tent as it looked like rain (it did rain hard in the wee hours of the morning) and caught up with some work that I put off that afternoon, nothing like camping in the 21st century.

I set the alarm on the phone for 5am so I would have plenty of time to make Marlinton before the office started calling. Jumped on 39 and made my way east. Got to Marlinton, found a coffee/bike shop and the proprietor was a hip woman that asked what year my Beemer was and said she had one in the 80's and did a bunch of rallies. Also a couple from Wisconsin pulled up on an Oilhead and gave them some directions and things to see before they headed back north in the morning. So with my coffee and roll I sat down for work for about 6 hours before I made more tracks.

6am Summersville Lake. Fog that you could cut

I was tempted too stay straight and take Allegheny Rd, but I didn't want to ruin the trip by being stuck on a gravel road with a bum tire. Never know.

This is where I camped Thursday night. Just me and some party. They invited me over but I had no intention of listening to a WVU game and I felt like being alone and take it in. Had a flask of rum, made some tuna and mac n cheese and slept on the blanket that night under the stars.

Mike that ran the place was one cool dude. He jumped out of his truck, said 'youre on the world finest machine, you're welcome to stay here'. He said how's 10 bux sound? Need some firewood? Brought me enough for the night all for the tenner.

South Branch of the Potomac I think. Slept right there by the water. Took a dip and floated around in the clean mountain water.

Had a fire going the entire night and by morning just enough to warm up with. I needed to get to town for some stuff to put on my arm. The Saturday before I got into Poison Sumac or Oak, possibly both. My left arm felt like lizard skin or cooked pork skin. Left hand swollen and couldn't see my knuckles. Right arm wasn't as bad. Wasn't going to stop me from the bike trip.

Other end of the road on on 220 about 5 miles from the campsite. The end on 28 that I took was a 15 mile mountain ride. The stupid NF campground wanted 20 bux (rape anyone) and I didn't see a good forest road to pull off on and sleep. Great road though. Worth the time, 20 miles altogether.

Off Dolly Sods. Dolly Sods road was just in goofy shape. I went 4 miles and turned around it was just in that rough of shape. Total washboard and it looked like a used mine field. The tire crossed my mind again.

Go figure I don't take a single pic at the Rally, we've all seen dudes hanging around a fire drinking beer. Good fun and a definite return planned for next year. Hung out with RocketMan and met new friends. Great group of guys that are in no rush.

Walter and I took our time breaking down camp and were the last ones out. I think it was after 12 by the time we left and rode together to Harman where we split. Walter was a godsend, had a few pills of prednisone and did my arms good. Better than the stuff I was rubbing on.

Jeff, I'm sure you got pix over the weekend, throw some up here if you want.

LOL - I posted on my local (BMWBMW) boards about three weeks ago asking if anyone had been to Big Bend Campground, no-one replied.

What is the road like? Gravel, hardpack? From campground to 220 OK?

NF campground decent?

Got an itch to go there for some reason, trying to talk RM into coming along :)

Hey there Ted,

Smoke Hole Road (County Road 2) is a decent older paved road.

The road to Big Bend Campground was 4 miles off of CR 2 at the 'Y', it was gravel with a few rough spots.

The NF campground looked nice but I have a problem dropping that much cash for a spot of ground to sleep on. 20 by the water or 18 for the other spots per night.

I asked the manager where else to go cos I'm a cheapskate and he pointed me to the spot I stayed at which is Eagle Rock Campground. Said someone may come by for collection or they may not.

I highly recommend the Eagle Rock campground. I'd like to go back there and spend a weekend or more to chill and ride. Their turn in is across the road from the Eagle Rock Historical Marker with the hand written sign.

Which ever road you start on 220 or 28, Big Bend is pretty much centered.
