S1000RR Experiences . . .

The first week . . . . S1000RR

This is an amazing m/c. Easy to drive, very responsive and it is good looking. Several people stopped me and asked about it. Many "thumbs up." It is very agile. I drove the 150 miles home and experimented with settings. I started with rain and then went to sport and then race. Sport is much easier on me. The throttle is so responsive in race that if the throttle rolls while going over a bump you could be doing a wheelie.
The brakes are amazing and the cornering is spectacular. I got about 135 miles out of the first tank with a 1 gallon reserve.
Riding position is high but it is a more comfortable seat than I expected. No monkey butt. I found that the grips are very hard and small. I have medium to large hands so I will look for some padded grip covers. My wrists and neck were sore after four hours. I hope to develop those muscles.
This is a great m/c for earning "performance awards" and I can see a radar detector in my future. Any recommendations?
Anyway, thanks for all of the PMs and interest. I don't think I'll drive it to Bloomsburg but I'll have stories to tell.

For North Carolina use a Valentine 1 is a good choice. You will also want a helmet repeater - go to Legal Speeding and look at H.A.R.D. Not sure how I'd mount it- haven't studied the possibilities on the SS.

Only other really good ones are the top Escorts but we don't have much photo radar in the state (and essentially no laser.) I don't find Escorts GPS photo radar stuff of any use (like the folks in AZ do) around here and the Valentine arrows plus the ability to do periodic upgrades (my Valentines have been back for upgrades several times since the early 90s) give the Valentine the edge for me.

Be aware that no detector is a substitute for situational awareness and must be paired with that and good eyesight lest you drive into an "instant on" or from the rear setup. Generally NC cops play it straight and I rarely note out of the ordinary type setups. Apparently with our NASCAR roots and the number of track weenies we've got, our speed tolerance is pretty high - especially compared to VA or SC. SC can be counted on for traps aimed at tourists, especially to Myrtle Beach- you'll never see anything aimed at the locals though they may get picked in the process.

Plenty of nearly empty pavement in the eastern rural areas. If you can get it to the mountains you can likely scare yourself witless in the twisties with a toy like that. Someday I need to borrow Capitol's SS demo- I've already ridden their other demos and keep telling myself I'm too old for a crotch rocket - but maybe not.....

You could bring it to one of our Wilmington club rides and be the first to show up with one. See https://sites.google.com/site/ccbmwridersclub/Home

Dang, I was hoping I'd win that thing... but I'm still happy for you!

I got a brief wet-road ride on one when I had my GS-A in for the brake line recall.

That is one impressive motorcycle. The shift assist is amazingly smooth, and the stability control is also impressive. From what they told me, you can rev the thing up and let out the clutch and let the computer keep the bike from trying to flip over or squirt the rear end out from under you, but I didn't have the guts to try that.

Anyway, I think I may have to get one.

Good call that you got the '11 with the dynamic traction control. I couldn't imagine anyone buying one without it, and apparently BMW felt the same way.

+1 on the Valentine One! I just use the factory provided suction cups and stick it to the top of the windshield on my RS. The lights are within my field of vision, so I've never bothered getting the "inside the helmet" display mentioned. There have been times however that it would have been really handy such as riding with the sun behind you. (it makes the lights on the unit a little difficult to see)

I've always gotten warnings 3-5 miles in advance. Often so far in advance that I find myself tending to ignore them by the time I get to the radar!! They are also the only ones which have a rear facing receiver.

I'm really sold on mine, and would highly recomend them. Often you can find a good deal on a used one on flea-bay, and Valentine also will update your unit if a new type of radar is introduced for as long as you own it. (does not matter if you buy new or not)

Hope that helps, and have fun with the new scoot!
