360 Degree Photography

Nice Panos, Kevin. Thanks! :thumb
Capitol Reef NP was one of my favorite places to camp (because my wife had a great time even though she was bitten by a spider... and because it was so peaceful and beautiful).

How about some HDR pano’s? (HDR without Tone mapping for the most part) from a recent trip out west to Sedona and the Grand Canyon.....(taken with my Pen EP-1 using my new 9-18 mm and 40-160 mm zooms)

From the middle of Nowhere Az, an interactive pano..(just ignore the watermark I’m still testing this software product out) It was a combo gas station, store, eatery, motel and RV campground.. literally in the middle of no-where. While the software this was built with it doesn’t do as good a job with the blending as the linux tools I’ve been testing, it does have a nice interactive tool build…
Big Sky Country for sure….

here’s a link to the location on google…

another version (full size) hold down the CTL key and use the mouse wheel to zoom

and a version with a slider

the last two were done with Hugin in Linux, much better blending

some other pano’s taken in the area of Sedona, Grand Canyon (but not all 360)

The Canyon by night (you’ll have to take my word for it that the canyon really is still there!) composed of two shots overlaid

and one from a local (to me) historical site called Rippon Lodge on the banks of the Potomac River in Va. This one is not HDR, but is tone-mapped

Great pictures! I like the 360 degree pics. They seem to be pretty sharp.

I have one stitch-together of Jackson Square in New Orleans. The POV is from the river side of the street looking toward - what is it? - St Louis Cathedral. With the people moving, I ended up with the same people in a couple of different places in the picture. I wanted to yell 'everybody stop and look this way,' but I didn't think they'd listen. In post editing, I took a couple of the obvious examples out.

Yah folks moving around can be a bit of a problem, I just tell folks they are all twins! :lol Have the same problem with HDR, only the people look like ghosts, had that with some of the HDR pano's I took in Belize at one of the Mayan ruins...

So, lets see your pano.

When I was 13 yo I climbed a water tank in my neighborhood. The tank is 65 feet w/ an 18" ladder up the side. I brought my brand new 35mm SLR camera I got for my birthday along w/ a tripod.
I shot a 360?? panorama of the area. I printed them out 11X14 and taped them side to side. I then mounted that to poster board. I then taped that closed and hung it from my bedroom ceiling with a light bulb in it. Standing up inside and turning around you got to 'experience' the view. Unfortunately black and white.

Not bad for a 13 yo.

Sadly the images are lost to history.

Very innovative, GrafikFeat! Sounds like something you could treasure for years. I'll bet people you knew were impressed.
How did your parents feel about the climb, though? Or did they know?... Like you, all those images are long lost.

Thank you... Oh, they knew... Once they saw the pictures. I wasn't punished... But I was 'reprimanded'...
I only recently lost the negatives. Due to a flood at my home in 2006.

I used to have every negative I ever shot. Gone.
But I digress.
Digital makes it sooo much easier now and they even have cameras dedicated to 360?? images.
I like to make my own and stitch my own in photoshop.
Lately they've been 180?? images.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/jim_popper/2583685493/" title="Spada Lake, WA. by GrafikFeat, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3192/2583685493_b79df1eba2_b.jpg" width="1024" height="245" alt="Spada Lake, WA." /></a>

This 180?? (+-) view is 3 images stitched in Photoshop.

very nice, surpised there is isn't any ghosting with the moving horses and carriage. Was this stitched or just shot wide?

Re: Jackson Square

Was this stitched or just shot wide?

This was stitched with Photoshop CS3. It's been a while, but I don't recall a ghosting problem. I remember that there were little distortions here and there. For example, the first effort resulted in an oval clock on the cathedral, when it's really round. I had to fix things like that. There's still the problem that the carriages toward the sides get more distorted somehow. It's been a while since I watched photo forums, so I kinda knew this stuff at one point, but it escapes me how to describe the distortion at the moment.

I think the panoramas are an interesting way to get at the subject. When they're printed out big, they're really in-your-face sort of treatments. Now you've generated some interest in the 360 photos. I could stand in the middle of the square and do a 360. Maybe next time. And, this time I yell "Everyone stand still!"
