Need to add a fuse panel...recommendations?

Ok, now that I've got my Zumo 665, Adaptiv radar detector and Coo Case mounted on my K13GT, my battery terminals look like spagetti central. I've got to get a fuse panel mounted. Obviously the GPS and detector will go on the switched terminals of the panel, and the case will go on an unswitched terminal. Recommendations for the fuse panel (I'm thinking a Centech), where to mount it, and where the heck is the best place to tap the switched lead, given the CanBus?

I did a Centec AP2, but wired both hot wires to the battery rather than one. That gave me up to eight circuits. Mounted it under the seat and it works great.

Ok, now that I've got my Zumo 665...

Ooh...just ordered one of the 665s from GPS City and should see it in about 2 weeks they say. How did you mount it on the K13GT? I have a K12GT (2008) which currently has a Zumo 550 mounted mid bars. Is there a BMW mount for the new 665? I imagine I could reuse the current wiring harness for the 550 with the 665 so long as I don't need to come up with some new mounting process.

Thanks for any advice.

By the way, I use the Centech AP-1 and mounted it right over the rear wheel under the back seat. I believe you can grab the parking light lead for your switched access. The dealer did the install for me when I bought the bike about a year ago. I'm sure you will get lots of feedback via the forum including pictures. You might also check the DIY section to see if there's an install process listed there.

Thanks for the DIY link. As for the 665, it comes with standard RAM mounting attachments, so you can use an existing RAM setup, if you have one. I ordered the Touratech locking Zumo 660/665 mount for added security, as the standard 665 mount just doesn't look that sturdy to me. I had the 550 on a RAM mount on the left handlebar of my K13GT, so I just swapped the 665/Touratech onto the existing RAM mount.

Dwestly,

Thanks for the info. Would you happen to have a picture of your set-up you could post to the forum? I'm sure others would appreciate it as would I!

Please ride safely!

Here you go. The RAM mount is the standard U-bolt configuration with the short arm on it. The 665 now has a single cable running from the mount, containing the power, XM antennae, audio out and mic wires, which split further down the cable. This makes for a nice, clean mounting and reduces the chances of a faulty connector at the mount. I have the XM antennae mounted low, between the handlebars. This was also a leftover mount from my 550 XM antennae, so I just re-used it. BTW, the new 665 takes a micro SD card, not the standard size SD card used in the 550.

Very nice set up. If you are interested you can mount the GXM antenna up under the front plastic with no adverse effects to reception. Let me know and I can post the pictures.

Thanks. I thought about it, but this works ok for me. The antennae is out of the way and just sits there, being happy... :laugh

I just ordered the Centech AP-2 and harness. Would it be possible to tie the switched line into the power outlet line, on the left side of the bike? Would seem to be an easier place/wire to reach than having to disassemble the entire front of the fairing...

Thanks for posting the pictures...very nice set-up! :thumb

Looks like the 665 with the Touratech locking bracket uses the standard 4-hole ram mounting arrangement like the 550's mount did. After looking at my bike last night, I think I might be able to use the existing plastic BMW GPS mounting bracket (centered on the bars with the 4-hole ram arrangement) to mount the Touratech bracket and the new GPS. After looking at a PDF of the owner's manual for the 665, I'm now certain that I'll have to run a new cable to power the 665 and allow for connection of the GXM-40 puck etc. Thanks as well for the info on the SD card. Nothing a quick drag and drop on the Macintosh from one card to the other won't fix! By the way, any noticeable increase in music loading times? I currently run about 4GB of data on my card which, on the 550, slowed down the boot up time to some degree but not terribly.

Anyway, this is most helpful and thank you again. I will let the forum know how things progress with my install of the 665 and post some pictures once I finish not screwing up the install! :scratch

Take care and please ride safely!

Here's my current set-up for the Z550. Note the black plastic mounting piece (BMW part) upon which the 550 mounts. I hope I can use this same back plate for the 665 with the Touratech bracket. What do you think?

By the way dwesterly...great Adaptiv radar detector users think alike huh? :dance

Yes you can do that - the reason I set mine up like that is that the parking lights do not have a delay as other voltage signals.

Cool, thanks Luis.

Peter, you should be able to use the same mounting plate for the 665, as the mounting holes are identical between the mounts. BTW, what's the part number for that KGT bracket? I wouldn't mind relocating my 665/Touratech mount...

Doug

Doug,

Derek from Touratech confirmed that as well and I ordered the silver locking mounting kit for my bike. Thanks!

I checked the BMW microfiche for a part number for that black plastic piece centered on the handlebars that the Zumo base attaches to and couldn't find anything. I just sent an email to Rose Marston at Max BMW in North Hampton, NH where that piece was installed in March of 2009 when I picked the bike up. I'm sure she'll get back to me with the info and I'll pass that along right away.

Have a great day and ride safely!

Best,

Peter

Only recommendation I can give is for the fuse panel. I have three Fuzeblock units mounted on three different bikes. Six available slots and you can chose how many are switched or unswitched. Its a bit taller than the Centec, but the relay is built into it. Just picked up a new to me R850R, and am going to be ordering another one for it. And I usually stick the GPS on 'unswitched'. That way I can have it hooked up to the bike and program it without having to switch on the key.

Super! I'll give her a call tomorrow. Thanks, Peter!

Ride Safe!

Doug,

Did you ever end up getting the GPS bracket from Max's for your bike? If so, how did the install go? I just received my 665 yesterday and I'm about to start the removal and install of the new GPS. Where did you grab your power from for the new unit? I may just run a line back to my Centech and go that route. Too bad Garmin ended up with a whole new wiring harness for the 665. More work = more aggravation! :banghead

Ride safely!
