WV Podunk Rides #3

Been out of WV for 2 weeks yesterday. PGH has been good, my home away from home and good friends. The south was fun and I'll hit it up again a few times I'm sure throughout the year. Oklahoma is up in the air, I'm 50/50 on it, and a week sounds so soon, all the more reason to do it. It's been nice yesterday and looks like it this morning. Going to ride to Wexford and get a nut for the mirror on the left. Totally gone and I'm stuck with a swinging mirror.

I think this is how I'm going to return to WV from PGH.

A small shuffle through SE Penn, a hop through Maryland and back into WV. They're calling for rain, not sure how much.

Tomorrow I plan on getting started 7ish or whenever. See what happens.

Is that 47 and 53 for the last part? I would be very interested in your thoughts, I have never ridden those roads and they look like a lot of fun!

East to West WVA Loop

Hey Mac,

Given the location of your home I'm wondering if you have ever done an East-West loop heading one direction on US 33 and the other direction on US 50? I'm considering such a ride this spring heading west from I-81 out of Harrisonburg on US 33 and returning from I-77 to I-81 on US 50. Any tips or advice?

Pete

Hi Pete, I have done both roads but not in a continuous loop. 33 is not a bad road, its 4 and 2 lane. 50 is utterly boring if you ask me. 4 lane and monotonous.

This installment of Podunk starts out in Pittsburgh, PA where I was in town last week for work. Was out for just over 2 weeks including my ride to the South, north to PGH, SW to gethome in Ravenswood.

Got home last night about 8. It pissed the rain on me for a majority of the day. It started slowing down about 50 miles east of Parkersburg, WV but it was still raining, regardless. Riding pictures are sparse cos of rain. Kind of a podunk podunk.

It wasn't the greatest of rides but made due with what I had. I couldn't get my bearings yesterday either, seemed like I was turning around or taking other routes to meet up where I planned on being. But what's plans? They need to be changed, right?

Here's my route. It changed up a bit cos of rain and not paying attention to the map.

I know that cemetary! My inlaws live just a few minutes from there.
That's a fun stretch of road as long as no one is in front of you.

Love the Podunk ride reports!

Love the Podunk ride reports!

Yeah, me too! It really fun seeing other people's pictures of sort of obscure places and saying hey, I was there!

I think I need to do a better job of taking pictures.

Right on guys!

Glad you all are digging the podunks.

That's cool you recognized the cemetery Newstar.

Nice write-up, thanks!

The roads look imminently ride-able - have to LOVE country 2-laners with 55mph speed limits :dance

That place in Weston looks like a must visit!

BTDT - it's called the "TransAllegany Lunatic Asylum", aka "Weston Hospital"..

Some great stuff turns up if you Google it... the show GhostBusters (cable show where they like to go places and pretend they see/hear ghosts..) visited it, but only went into the newer buildings.

The tour is worthwhile.. and fun. In a bizarre sort of way.

My friend Mike in his pink 'stich escaped!

View into Weston from the hospital door..

Ted, the road was nice and would have been better without the rain, but I like to see green, so I shouldn't bitch.

Deilenberger, Thanks for the added info and pix. How much of the hospital are you able to go through? It's a pretty big place between the 2 buildings.

Depends on which tour you take. There is a short one (about 45 minutes) for the ground floor, that also covers general info on mental health treatment through the era of the hospital. There is a longer one (costs more) that's over 2 hours long, and takes in the upper floors of the main building. Dunno if any of the tours cover the auxiliary buildings..

is that the tunnel that goes thru the hill where the park is that you can get this view of PGH from? sure looks like it...

when it comes up slide the pic up till you see the double arrows and use those to start the pan.

Yep, I had an apartment a few blocks down from the park where your bike is parked, Grandview Park on Bailey Ave. If you stay straight on Bailey for another block or two, it turns into Beltzhoover which takes you into on of PGH finest ghettos, Allentown.

Beltzhoover was always on the news, cos something going down. We'd see undercover cops all the time in the area busting people. Got to watch a car burn in flames one day too.

Thanks for the inquiry RM.
