Just Ridin' Pictures

Had a similar situation a few years ago in Nevada, by myself, in the middle of what seemed like nowhere. I didn't see what looked like a clear, safe path through all of the beasts so I honked the horn. Apparently the biggest animal in the group, an impressive bull, thought that was threatening. He squared up looking right at me and started stomping one of his front feet. As images of becoming a stomped piece of road jerky, to be discovered in lord knows how long before another fool came along, I decided to be more patient.

And that's when you remember you don't have reverse :)
range

On a trip out west in 2000 during the forest fires in the 'Bitteroot' range. My riding buddy & I came upon a cow just standing in the middle of the road. RT 12 as I recall . She was singed & still smoking at a few places on her body. She looked like she was in shock. I stopped & she walked right up too me. Both myself & my friend gave her our last bottles of water, it was about all we could. Felt sorry for the poor thing.

At our stop for the night I asked my friend what he wanted for supper that night ? He said well considering our friend out there on the road today, I'm thinking chicken....:)

Winter Over in Boston - Took The RT For a Ride

Well, finally, Winter and snow seem to have departed the Boston area for a few months. Today, I was out for my second ride in 2017 and made my way to "Chickatawbut Hill" in the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton, MA. Attached photo shows my RT in the foreground and the skyline of Boston about 10 miles in the distance.

This location is just below the site (at the top of the hill) where a Nike Missile battery was operated by the US Army in the 1950s and 60s. This was one of about ten (I think) Nike batteries which ringed the Boston area to protect against Soviet bombers.

Did a little four day 1200 mile trip from DFW to NW Arkansas/SE Missouri, up and down the Ozarks (AR Hwy 23, Scenic Byway 7 etc.) last weekend with four friends. Awesome trip!

My apologies for the other "bikes" :D in the picture, but at least there's another BMW (2016 K1600GTL). Gotta also tip my helmet to my buddy who rode the trip with his 2016 KTM Superduke.

EDIT: And to at least somewhat comply with the rules of the thread as so subtly hinted below ;), I'll stick one more to the bottom. :wave

I have a question for you 'river-rider guys'....:) How do you know...what's under you, what's "down there" ? And how do you all keep water out of your intake?.......:scratch

OK, that's three questions......

I have never done it so I really do not know.......:dunno

One, you don't really know what's "down there." Most folks pre-walk through any crossing where they can't see the bottom. Even if you can see it, it can be slicker than greased goat snot.

Two, don't drop your bike. If you do, guaranteed to soak your air filter and drown your engine. I've heard of engines where water gets into the crankcase (not sure how, past the rings or through the crankcase breather . . ???) and then you really do need to change the oil, like right now.

Also, the final drive is usually quite hot, and being submerged in water can lead to water being sucked in through that breather.

That's not to mention front wheel bearings in our GS's, or any other wheel bearings, front or rear. Same thing, hot bearings, cold water, usually doesn't make it past the seals but if it does, they'll need attention pretty soon.

OTOH, I've done a few crossings, without any drama. If you get through it without dropping the bike, all's usually good. Guys/gals who do these things regularly take care of their bikes.

Ask George Mangicaro at Beemers Uber Alles in Manassas about what he's seen happen to bikes after water crossings that went awry. (He's the author of the maintenance column in MOA's Owner's News).
