Vacation in San Fran - need guidance

I'm planning a trip to San Francisco this summer with my family. Dates aren't firm but thinking about end of June. Can anyone with local knowledge of the San Fran area provide some guidance on where to stay and what to do? I have a bit of knowledge about the Russian Hill area and have looked at some condo rentals in that area. Do you recomend this? I'll also want to rent a bike to ride for a few days while I'm there. Any suggestions on a rental and what I should see in a limited time?

Any help will be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

As to where to go, what to see...
  • Fisherman's wharf
  • GG bridge, then ride over to Muir woods
  • Alcatraz is a pretty good tour
  • Ever been on a Segway? There are Segway tours of Angel Island. Take the ferry from Tiburon. Fun.
  • Ride your rental bike south and hit Skyline (SR 35) with the obligatory stop at Alice's and the back roads between skyline and the coast
  • Spend a day in GG park

I'm sure there will be lots of other suggestions.

Any idea on a condo? I've found several on the vrbo.com site that seem really nice - priced between 1400-2000 for the week. Is this the way to go and is the Russian Hill area the place to stay?

Thanks so much and keep the ideas coming!

Where do you live? If near the ocean, head east and in 3 hours you're in Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Gold country. If in the mountains, head north up Highway 1..much more scenic than Big Sur with lots of little funky towns along the coastline.

Something local would be go south on highway 1 out of SF to highway 84. Go east up the mountain until you see about 2-3 hundred motorcycles gathered at Alice's Restaurant. Take any of the 4 ways out for a wonderful ride.

There's 8-9 BMW dealers within 100 miles of SF in case you need something.

We're a bunch of riding fools out here and think nothing of leaving the Bay area and snagging 3-4 Sierra passes and being home in time for dinner or heading north to Bodega Bay or Jenner for lunch :eat

If you want a good twisty road, take "Sharp Park BLVD" from Highway 1 (in Pacifica) uphill to Interstate 280. It is a great, uphill, twisty road and very popular to ride. Downhill is OK, but uphill is always better.

+1 :thumb This guy is great!

Baker Beach (near the GG bridge)
Japanese Garden
Chinatown is like no other

If by car & it's feasible, I recommend rending a convertible. We rented one sort-of by accident and had a real good time!

This is absolutely twisted & scenic:

Tiz' a great line; it's a shame that Twain never wrote or said it.

That's a real shame, because it is a great line.

Ok, I did what I tell other people to do: I went off and read about it at Snopes.

Since it isn't Twain's line, and there appears to be no attribution for it, and since I use it all the time, from now on I'm going to claim it as my own. :p

I know your pain; it about broke my heart when I found out. Thank god he has a bunch more great ones, like,
"The most interesting information comes from children, for they tell all they know and then stop. "

BTW, if anyone asks, I will tell them the SF/winter/summer line was yours.:drink

You can check out Haight Ashbury, there is an awesome record/CD store there called Amoeba Records & a great Pizza joint on the same block as well. Fillmore Jazz district & Japantown for fresh sushi. See a concert at the Fillmore for a great contact high...:boldpurpl

There are also the CA Academy of Sciences, Exploratorium, Don't miss Alcatraz, the new tour is way better than the tour of old. Jet on down HWY 1 to Monterey & or Santa Cruz & even all the way to Morrow Bay...

My favorite... real Twain quote... is

"If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man."

BTW, if anyone asks, I will tell them the SF/winter/summer line was yours.:drink

I owe you a beer. You are a scholar and a gentleman.
