The best restaurant between Troy, New York and Bennington, VT. The Man of Kent gets my personal excellent rating.

Museum of Black WWII History

3b3a0d60.jpg

The all-black 332nd Fighter Group (the Tuskegee Airmen) escorted more than 200 bombing missions over Germany without the loss of a single bomber to enemy fighters.

  • The 99th Squadron distinguished itself by being awarded two Presidential Unit Citations (June-July 1943 and May 1944) for outstanding tactical air support and aerial combat in the 12th Air Force in Italy, before joining the 332nd Fighter Group.
  • The 332nd Fighter Group was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its longest bomber escort mission to Berlin, Germany, March 24, 1945. It destroyed three German ME-262 Jet fighters and damaged five additional jet fighters without losing any of the bombers or any of its own fighter aircraft to enemy fighters.
  • The 332nd Fighter Group had also distinguished itself in June 1944 when two of its pilots flying P-47 Thunderbolts discovered a German destroyer in the harbor of Trieste, Italy.
  • The tenacious bomber escort cover provided by the 332nd "Red Tail" fighters often discouraged enemy fighter pilots from attacking bombers escorted by the 332nd Fighter Group.

The purpose of this museum (the only one of its kind in the U.S.) is not to glorify war but to document it - in particular to honor the long-ignored role of African-Americans in the largest worldwide conflict in human history.

New England's Northwest Coast

The Lake Champlain Islands have more shoreline and islands than any other part of Vermont. Here a traveler may come upon breathtaking views at any bend in the road. Located between two great cities, Montreal, Quebec and Burlington, Vermont, our small towns and stunning scenery offer quiet rural charm. Enjoy lakeside lodging and dining, hiking and biking trails, as well as year-round fishing, boating and golf. Sample local cheeses, chocolate and wines. Feast in autumn on apples, cider and pies, while shopping for antiques and mementos. Explore one of the world's oldest coral reefs, New England's oldest log cabin, and other historic sites. Or bask on a sandy beach in one of our State Parks. Stay a day, a week or a lifetime!

Nice promo job Paul - I hope the state of Vermont pays you well!
Looking forward to seeing your part of the world.

;)

Any job worth doing is worth doing to excess. :laugh

There are still some nice surprises to pull out of the hat but the paper work is not complete. What is in place is

  • Free Early Camping
  • The Adirondacks
  • The Catskills
  • The Berkshires
  • The Green Mountains
The location is one of the best I have ever seen with gasoline, hardware, groceries and one of the biggest and best package stores in Vermont within easy walking distance of the campsite. Wait until you see the moose they have inside the package store.

It takes a lot of time to explore this corner of the world. A lot of folks claim that Vermont is bigger than Texas if you could ever iron it out. ;)

This is one of those rare opportunities to visit most of New England inexpensively. The free early camping is wonderful and all on nice flat ground. But bring your union suit as it gets a mite chilly at night.

sitting in Key West and looking at Miami tomorrow. Thinking about the RA while putting pieces of the Salty Fog Riders Rally together. See you in Vermont!! - Bob and Mary

Great camping area

Went to Pownal yesterday to test the camping area which is a nice field of short grass which has grown over acres of asphalt. There were fears that tent pegs could not be driven in to the old surface.
FEAR NOT!

I stopped at the hardware store about 7/10ths of a mile from the camping area. They store gave me a 24 penny nail (a spike) and I drove it easily into the pavement. No problem at all. :dance

The Other Big Apple

78b37859.jpg

Southern Vermont Orchards was originally established by Edward Hamlin Everett. In the spring of 1912 he began setting out apple trees. By 1920 he had extended his holdings from the original farm south over Carpenter Hill to Pownal, a distance exceeding ten miles. On this land, he planted cherries, quince, pears and plums as well as 65 varieties of apples. Under his guidance Everett Orchards became the largest privately owned orchard in the world , renowned for its modern agricultural practice and high quality fruit.

Following Everett's death in 1929 his property was gradually divided and sold. Today, Southern Vermont Orchards operates all the original orchard that remains in production. Our 300 acres of orchard continue to benefit from Everett's wise selection of location which enables us to raise an apple of unique quality. Southern Vermont Orchards is proud to carry on the tradition of fine fruit established by Edward Everett.

The latest generation to run the Southern Vermont Orchards, have transformed the business from the 100-year-old orchard covering the hills south of Bennington, Vermont, into a thriving bakery and produce market featured on
  • The Food Network's $40 A Day
  • Good Morning America
  • Ron Hazelton's House Calls and
  • Local NBC, CBS and public television affiliates.

The changes have involved expanding what was once a road side produce stands selling apples into The Apple Barn & Country Bake shop where the sweet smell of freshly picked apples mingles with the warm, rich aromas of an old-fashioned country bakery. It not only offers its fresh, delicious fruits and baked goods, maple syrup and many homemade specialty products, but has become a family entertainment destination. So, if you are planning a trip to Vermont, come on by and we'll make sure you have our own special Vermont welcome.

The Museum preserves the heritage of the mechanical arts, celebrates the ingenuity of our mechanical forebears, and explores the effects of their work on our everyday lives. The American Precision Museum, housed in the original Robbins & Lawrence Armory, now holds the largest collection of historically significant machine tools in the nation.

Precision manufacturing touches us all. Without it, we would not have the mass communication, rapid transportation, modern standards of sanitation and medical care, abundant food and clothing, or the leisure for universal education.

The tools and the methods which make mass production possible were pioneered at the Robbins & Lawrence Armory in Windsor, Vermont. Using precision metal and wood cutting machines and high standards of accuracy, Robbins & Lawrence proved the effectiveness of a new type of manufacturing that would soon be known as the American System. Across America, a powerful machine tool industry grew up, flourishing especially in New England and the northern Midwest. Today, even in the age of plastics and microprocessors, the concept of precision manufacturing provides the foundation for modern industry around the world.

So you're saying that early camping on site is free? That's cool.

Count me in! Don:thumb

Exactly! The space is there waiting to be used. But get up early on Wednesday and go for ride or the rally committee might press you into service. :laugh

Looking forward to meeting you in person. Don't forget union suit. The nights can and do get chilly.

Southern Vermont Natural History Museum

The Southern Vermont Natural History Museum is located at the Hogback Mountain Scenic Overlook on Route 9 in Marlboro, Vermont, in the southern foothills of the scenic Green Mountains. Perched on an overlook with views into Massachusetts and New Hampshire,
on a clear day the horizon is 100 miles away.

Among the exhibits featured at the Museum are mounted specimens of over 600 native
New England birds and mammals in 100 small dioramas, one of the largest collections of its
type in the Northeast. Most of these wild animal specimens were collected by Luman Ranger Nelson, a noted New England taxidermist, in the early part of the 20th century. The specimens are in extraordinarily good condition for their age.

Also see a live hawks and owls in our raptor center, and learn about the natural history of these
beautiful and fascinating birds. Come see our latest addition, a Red Shouldered Hawk!

Enjoy our wildflower exhibit during the summer and fall. Learn about Vermont wetland
inhabitants through our amphibian and reptile exhibit. Our collection has many unusual
specimens including 9 albino birds and mammals and 3 extinct birds.

Enjoy a hike up nearby Mt. Olga for a breathtaking view of the northern New England Mountains.

That would solve my problem of getting me, the wife, the motorcycle and the trailer all there. :scratch

Trailer? :scratch How large? Please, just a few more details. I know you don't mean an 18 wheeler but probably have something more like a 5th wheel?

Will be over in Pownal later in week and will come back with lots of pictures. Maybe a look at this mammoth site would help.
