South East WV Weekend Ride

I intended on heading to FLA Keys last weekend but Ida hit that over the head.

Not to be deterred, wanting to go somewhere, and after getting the bike ready for a 2,500 mile trip, I took a ride around south east WV which turned out to best in my mind. Nothing like checking out your backyard.

I've been through the area numerous times so this trip I slowed it down and did some exploring and made a great ride out of it leaving Friday around 1pm and got back to the house Sunday around 6.

I covered roughly 550 miles and besides taking 77 south to Charleston, I stuck to the scenic byways, and WV's great mountain roads, mainly Rt 60, 92, 55, 20, 19, and 5.

I did the trip on the cheap, total cost of weekend trip was about $40-50
Other than 2 coffee and 2 gatorades, only item purchased on the road was fuel.

With some beer, bagels, PB&J, and Gold Fish I hit the road.

For like the last 10 years, I have not seen this place open. Tourist trap but a good laugh with the set up of the place and the gift shop where you can but commemorative confederate plates.

Friday night camp. Found this pavilion off the road in Babcock State Park. No need for the tent, just the bag and blanket. Everything was closed for the season and the driveway had a gate, which would keep vehicles out but the bike had no problem going around. It got cold but it was bearable. Too close to road to make a fire.

Got onto 92 and took lunch in the Monongahela National Forest. I have to say this is a good time to ride around this general area, all the parks are empty and you can take your time and ponder a bit.

From here I was planning on riding 55 around the west side of the forest but it was 4:30 and going to be dark very soon and needed a place to crash.

Score, Watoga State Park which was also closed. About a mile down the river was a campground, also had a vehicle gate the bike slipped around easily.

Ahh, being a mile into the mountains I could start a fire. It was getting dark fast after I scouted the area and took a site way in the cut. Never know if a ranger may show up. I went to sleep early both nites, around 8. Just after I put on a second pair of socks, what I believe was deer (I think, didn't sound heavy like a bear and it was very dark) 2 or 3 of them, hung around with in 10 feet of me just standing there. I remained still and let them do there thing.

South East Wv Weekend Ride End

First ride of the day, Highland Scenic Highway 150, very nice and had the park to myself. I also got to see a black bear jog across the road about 50 yards in front of me.

From here I was on some mountain rode towards Glenville. Didn't get any pix but was a fun ride. Spilled the bike in a turn but no harm to me or bike. Picked it up and continued on down the road. All good.

Trip was a fantastic ride, I'm thinking about another instate ride possibly south west area. New territory for me there. Bike ran flawlessly as it always has and you don't have to leave the state to have a good time. And a whole weekend for the cost of 50 bux!

Great ride report. You should visit the southwest part of your state. I'm on the Virginia side about 35 miles from the WV line. Down in the corner, you are near great riding in WV, KY, VA, TN and NC. You could ride a week and never see the same thing twice or have a dull moment.

Thanks Ken. I would like to get in that direction ASAP, during my favorite time of year.

I spent my lunch checking out your weekend. You seem to enjoy the same things I do; Cemetaries, the old mill, toom stones and BMW motorcycles of course. I spent a week touring the Civil War military parks in Virginia and Pennsylvania West Virginia etc. Beautiful country side and scenery. I was there in Late May much warmer than your trip. Thank you for the great pictures and for sharing your comments, I really enjoyed spending the time.

Loved the report - great pix. I recently read about the Highland Scenic Highway and put it on my list of roads to do. It just moved up my list.

thanks guys, you really can't go wrong on any of the roads in the area. In more of the hair pin turns, gravel was present sometimes heavy, but overall in pretty decent shape and clear.

Getting out there with just myself and the bike made for a nice weekend, no rush and no place to be other than where I was and the 2 lanes. Very chill weekend worth every bit.
