The treacherous sand track of Lierop, Holland played host to the third to last GP of a long 2012 MX season. Saturday’s qualifying saw Alessandro Lupino take fifteenth place, followed by Ivo Monticelli, marking up his best qualifying time so far, both on the new Husqvarna TC250R. Nick Triest was out of the running still battling with an injury to his left shoulder. Lupino began the first heat amongst the main group with Monticelli close behind as the race got underway. SBK goes to “The Green Hell” aka known as BMW SBK home track aka the Nurburgring. The track is infamous for weather conditions in general and specifically weather conditions that can be drastically different from one end to the other. This has been a whimsical season for the SBK weatherman so naturally he has gone against norm and predicted a sunny race weekend with Superpole Saturday the only day with a chance of rain; then only a 20% chance at that.

If SBK were a stick and ball sport, down at the Official Fly-Over-Land Coffee Shop, we would be talking about teams needing to make a move if they want to be a champion while those out front in the standings need to start putting teams away or let them hang around and gain momentum. It is not. Even with a double BMW could not put the championship away at the Nurburgring. There are six races and 150 points up for grab before the season ends.Yet BMW is in the Manufacturer Championship lead and needs to show it can do just that.

BMW 361 pts
Nurburgring has consistently been on the SBK calendar since 2008. The home track to BMW has been friendly to BMW but has not yielded a win for them yet. This year it comes at a point in the season where things are sorted out for riders and team.

Despite the seemingly long straights (straight or slightly bent) that should favor the powerful, the combinations of slow and fast turns that determine how you do in the straights are just as important. Get the corners wrong and you are down shifting at the wrong sport and rolling on to late to carry speed through the corner and into the straight.

The S1000RRv2 is a better balance bike than its predecessors. The bike is at the perfect season development point to come home. The riders and team are comfortable with each other to understand how to wring the most out of it.

Haslam: In my stick and ball sport days we would have called his season 'snake bit' so far. His results understate his performance in my book. This weekend he should have a great chance to change that a bit. In 2010 for Suzuki he qualified 5th and place P6 and P3 on Sunday. For BMW with a .v1 he qualified 7th and P5 and P9 in a rainy second race. His 2012 bike is far superior to either bike he had on those days. If he can keep the snakes at bay he should have a very strong day.

Melandri: In 2010 this year's current Rider Championship leader qualified P4 scoring a P2 in the first and a P6 in the rainy second. I expect he will perform better overall in 2012.

Aprilia 334.5 pts
Q: Is the Aprilia up to scratch at the Nurburgring?
A: Yes and No.

Moscow suggest that in the hands of Laverty and Davies the bike will be a strong contender for BMW or anyone else to deal with. Both riders were able to take their Aprilias around the tight sections of Moscow with alacrity and take advantage of the RSV4 Factory's power in the straight. The Nurburgring requires a similar combination.

In the hands of Biaggi it could go either way. His riding style takes full advantage of Aprilia power and brakes but not the chassis. That combination of wrist and brakes has taken him a long way and could yield big results if he does not repeat his Moscow ride. If he does 'The Green Hell” will exacerbate everything that went wrong for him in Russia.

BMW can not “put Aprilia away” this weekend. However, it must finish ahead of them. That alone will say much about the BMW Team and where it will finish the season.

Ducati 322 pts
Balance is Ducati's middle name. This would appear to make the Nurburgring ideal for it. In 2011 Checa took the pole for Ducati and the win in Race 1, P8 in Race 2. In the second race Guintoli pulled a podium P2. Look back over the other seasons and the Ducati balance has played well at this track. The case for Ducati appears to be strong but it does not have the legs the other marques have and they have cut deeply into the Ducati handling edge.

The Ducati could play a role in dealing with Aprilia but they are more likely to be fighting to hold their current championship standing.

Kawasaki 298.5 pts
Team Green at the Green Hell... scary _____!

In 2010 the Z with Sykes on board qualified 7th and post a Race 1 P5 and Race 2 P7. In 2011 he qualified 6th. Race 1 he could only manage a P11 but took the win in Race 2. The 2012 Zed is another story.

Expect Sykes to be on top or near the top in qualifying. The question on Sunday is will he run his tyres off before the end of the race or contain himself much as he did in Race 1 at Moscow. If Sykes does destroy his tyres Baz should be there to carry the fight for Kawasaki. I don't expect him to qualify as well as Sykes but on race day he could be the better performer in the long run. Both with their Green Machines are capable of beating the Aprilias. That is fine. Can the BMW riders deal with them if they do?

Honda 221.5 pts | Suzuki 93.5 pts
I fully expect Honda to retain a lead over Suzuki for the rest of the season. The reason to combine them ( beyond being lazy and saving space) is the arc of their seasons crossed in Moscow; at least in my book.

Honda hit a plateau earlier in the season and is dropping. Suzuki has been building on the other hand and heading upward.

Will Rea's MotoGP test fire up the racing juices for him or prove a distraction leading to disappointment. I suspect the latter. At Suzuki the riders are healing every day and beat Honda in Race 2 at Moscow.

The big question is can either of these teams help BMW contain Aprilia and Ducati?

That will be one of things we will debate down at the Official Fly-Over-Land Coffee Shop this weekend. The other will be cherry or apple fritters? I need to do research in preponderation for that debate. Have to go.

Hamilton more important to McLaren's future than Button. Hamilton to replace Schumacher at Mercedes. All the time Hamilton is not getting his pen out and time marches on. New World and National Records For BMW Motorcycles Andy Sills and Erin Hunter Pilot the BMW S 1000 RR asto New Heights at Bonneville

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – September 5, 2012… Legendary landspeed racer Andy Sills claimed another world record riding solo on a 2012 BMW S 1000 RR at the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials on August 29. Sills recorded a flying mile two-way average speed of 204.784 mph, setting a new FIM record in the Partially Streamlined Naturally Aspirated 1000 cc class at the famed Bonneville Salt Flats, west of Salt Lake City, Utah. Sills bested the previous world record set in 2009 by more than four-and-a-half miles per hour.

Erin Hunter, also an accomplished landspeed racer and ambassador for women in the sport, set an AMA national record on the same BMW S 1000 RR with a top speed of 207.758 and a two-way average of 205.566 mph (besting the previous record by over six miles per hour) at the Bonneville event.

“We’ve had the good fortune to race a number of different bikes throughout our careers, including streamliners,” commented Erin, “and the BMW S 1000 RR is incredibly stable at high speeds. The super stable platform allows us to focus on our racing skills without having to worry about the performance of the bike. You can trust it and go all out.”

“Andy and Erin contacted me about a week before the trials and asked if I could provide them with an S 1000 RR for Bonneville,” said Gary Orr, co-owner and general manager of San Diego BMW Motorcycles. “We’ve been successfully prepping race bikes for them for the past several years, so we were happy to help them out again.”

Orr and his mechanics took the production bike and installed a BMW HP Race Powerkit, a LeoVince SBK exhaust pipe, and race body work. In the meantime, Brock’s Performance shipped Orr a suspension lowering kit. With little time to spare, the race-ready S 1000 RR was delivered to Andy and Erin the day before they left for Bonneville. The couple had FastSkinz race vinyl added to the bike at the BUB event.

Now in its 9th year, the Bonneville BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials continue to be solely dedicated to motorcycles. The event offers world and national record breaking opportunities and attracts top contenders in many classes.

Andy Sills and Erin Hunter are avid high-speed riders with a combined 17 years of landspeed racing competition. Together, they have earned 19 world and national landspeed records with streamliner motorcycles as well as traditional race bikes. They hold a Guinness World Record for the fastest speed on a motorcycle ridden by two people simultaneously – a record achieved on a 2011 BMW S 1000 RR reaching an average two-way speed of 181.426 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats where Andy was the rider for the qualification run (with Erin as the pillion passenger) and they switched for the record return run – with Erin as the rider and Andy as the pillion passenger. Erin also is named in the Guinness Book of World Records as the fastest female with a World Record in a streamliner motorcycle.

Andy became known in the BMW community in 2005 for setting the FIM land speed record of approximately 176 mph on the BMW K 1200 S at Bonneville, during BUB’s Speed Trials. The dynamic duo will continue to race the 2012 S 1000 RR this year and next with the goal of setting new speed records. Avid BMW riders, their San Francisco garage also houses an HP2 Sport, an R1200 S and a K 1300 S.

Piloting a wide range of two wheel machines across the Bonneville Salt Flats, Andy Sills has 7 land speed records under his belt. "With the throttle wide open I concentrate on being smart and being safe ... by mile four, achieving top speed a peace comes over you. You're alone on an 11 mile course in the high desert with a sense of being totally 'in the moment'... it's a great place!"

In 2009, Erin Hunter was one of three women in America nominated for the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Female Rider of the Year.

Also in 2009, Erin had the honor of sharing her racing story as a keynote speaker at the AMA's Women in Motorcycling event in Keystone, Colorado.

Erin is most proud, however, of her work as an ambassador for the sport of Landspeed Racing, and in particular her role in encouraging women to discover the sport. Erin is the founder of the sheEmoto Award which she bestows on the female LSR racer who best embodies what it means to participate.

"I am grateful to have accomplished a lot in my life, and I owe this success to people who never said 'girls don't do that', but instead said 'go for it!'", says Erin.

2012 Nurburgring Free Practice 1st Session

The Althea Ducati ridden by Giugliano, not teammate Checa, found the legs to lead the first session at 'The Green hell'. Looking behind the lap times for both Giugliano and Checa the ideal lap time gaps are some of the biggest in the first 16 riders. To this handicapper it suggests Ducati may do better than I expected this weekend if it can keep those legs while finding that balance with handling their bike is known for. Expect to see Checa and other Ducati riders improve their grid positions in Qualifying 1.

Biaggi posted a P2 in this session and what you see in times is about what you will get from him. Laverty and Davies are farther down the FP1 grid but show room for improvement. If they can improve the lessons learned from their improvement process should help Biaggi. The Aprilia and its riders should not be discounted by any stretch of the imagination; yet, I sense they are vulnerable.

The MotoGP tests appear to have stirred his competitive juices resulting in a strong P4 for this session. The Honda rider has one of the smallest ideal to real lap time gaps. This is a good news bad news thing for Rea and Honda. The Bad news first. The gap suggesting he may qualify lower on the chart. At the same time. The good news in the first set of results is Rea appears to be set up to repeat the times lap after lap which is more important on Sunday than a one off time Saturday.

Suzuki finds itself as being Honda's clone. Camier has the smallest gap in the top 16 riders. Great news for Suzuki on Sunday. Can they find a way to uncork some more speed from the bike to achieve a better track position to race from on Sunday?

BMW is Yin and Yang. Melandri is P3 in this session and like Biaggi has a low gap time suggesting not much room for improvement on his own. Haslam is P9 on this session chart but has almost double the gap time of Melandri. Put the two riders together with a pit crew and mechanics that can sort this out and BMW may well be in position to put their stamp on the home race.

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport had a difficult but productive day as it started into its home event at the N??rburgring (GER). The iconic race track hosts the third from last round of the 2012 FIM Superbike World Championship. Factory rider Leon Haslam (GBR) finished todayÔÇÖs first qualifying practice in fifth on the provisional second row. Leon is ignoring a lot of pain caused by the injury to his left shoulder he suffered two weeks ago when he crashed in race two at ÔÇ£Moscow RacewayÔÇØ (RUS). Unfortunately, due to the pain, he could not ride as many laps as planned. His team-mate, Marco Melandri (ITA), qualified a provisional 12th. Checa tops the Qualifying 1 in a fashion very reminiscent of his championship season. His Q1 pole time and his ideal lap, the sum of his best sector times, are identical. Althea and the Champ are dialed in at The Ring. Teammate Giugliano isn't quite as dialed in but has split the variance for the first session by more than half.

Both leading Ducati riders turned in 268.7 kph for session max speeds. Canepa on a Ducati in P16 also turned a 268.7 max speed. All riders between P2 and P16 posted max speeds between 272-279kph. Haslam was the fastest in that group with a top speed of 279.1. Melandri's 276.2 was third fastest.

The BMW press release intro describes this as a difficult day. Haslam's injuries no doubt were fine during the week but not fully tested in race conditions. In the first race of the season he showed he can race hurt and his current P5 confirms that. He did improve his lap time gap indicating he is getting closer to being dialed in; portending good things to come. Melandri's comments have something of a new twist but are consistent with Fridays past; he is never happy with the handling. Melandri increased his gap time and his standings dropped eight spots.

The pit crew found more speed for the BMW riders. Both scored incrementally faster max speeds. Dialing a race set up in is always tricky but it always seemed easier to dial back speed to improve handling than to find speed to use a strong handling chassis.

As things stand all four BMW riders follow are in the Superpole round. Q2 and a second free practice happen before the Superpole rounds. The time will be spent trying to find that balance between speed and handling.

Rea takes Honda to the top of Qualifying 2

Checa controlled the session for Ducati followed by Sykes on his Kawasaki until BMW's Melandri posted his best time two thirds of the way the session. Melandri showed great improvement over Fridays performance and held the provisional pole until the closing minutes when Rea pulled a hot lap to top the session. Teammate Haslam never made it off a provisional row two slot finishing P7.

Less than a second covers the field from P1 Rea to P15 Salom. Free practice will be used to solve problems for some. For others it will be a chance to work on race setup before the Superpole round sets the final grid. Based on the combined times Super pole should be hotly contested.

Superpole is a good news bad news story for BMW.

The good news is Sunday Melandri will start on the front row in P3. Haslam will start on the third row in P 12. The bad news is Haslam's P12 is the result of a crash in Superpole 2. I have no information about his condition at this time.

Front row start at the home round: Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport had a successful Superpole qualifying at N??rburgring (GER). Factory rider Marco Melandri (ITA) will start the third last round of the 2012 FIM Superbike World Championship from third on the grid, missing out on pole position by only 0.057 seconds. His team-mate Leon Haslam (GBR) was denied a top result by a crash in Superpole 2 and will start from 12th on his BMW S 1000 RR. In today’s second qualifying practice and free practice sessions both riders were already fast. Leon was still suffering pain from his injured left shoulder but overcame it again. At the start of Superpole 1, both riders went out on race tyres, setting the fastest and second fastest time. After four minutes, the session had to be red flagged due to a crash. After the restart both Marco and Leon stayed in the garage as their times qualified them comfortably for Superpole 2. In this second part, both riders went out on qualifying tyres. While Marco topped the time sheets again with a temporary new lap record of 1:54.056 minutes, Leon crashed in the last sector and had to settle for 12th. In the deciding Superpole 3, Marco went out on his second qualifying tyre and bettered his lap time to 1:53.912 minutes, qualifying third on the front row. Haslam is snake bit again. The crash was truly unfortunate. Neither BMW rider ended the day on top but they consistently spent more time in the top than the rest of the usual suspects. Slice and dice the qualifying numbers as much as I might this has me excited to get up at a ridiculous time on a Sunday morning for Race 1.

Melandri has a Row 1 starting position. Biaggi and Sykes may win the race to turn three but I don't think either will keep the lead the entire time. Melandri is in a great spot to pick them off.

Haslam has a bigger challenge but the outside of Row 3 is a good place to pick people off as the red lights go out and fight his way to the front.

Dosoli is concerns about pace leave me wondering how he defines that. Melandri and Haslam were turning in top speeds for the sessions. Max speeds do not seem to be the issues. Melandri turned very few laps so his perfect lap/ideal lap match is skewed but it was repeated in two sessions. Pace is not my question but their ability to manage their tyres over the race. They did it in Moscow and before so ….

2012 Race 1 N??burgring is GREEN HELL for BMW

As the red lights went out Sykes jumped to the early lead with Biaggi, Checa, Laverty and Melandri all within a second behind him. Fabrizio, BMW Italia rider, crashed starting the Roundel teams' decent into Green Hell.

Honda's Rea P5 was lighting up the board the best maximum speed and closing when the Green Hell sucked him up after two laps. Ducati's Giugliano took P1 in the first Free Practice and defeated the Green Hell, but fell as its victim after three laps. Checa was the next to suffer a crash taking him out of the hunt for the lead.

Up front Sykes was holding on to the lead while fending off hammering blows of speed from Biaggi. Melandri, as a result of Checa's crash and dealing with Laverty, was in P3. The duel with Laverty had left the pair a bit off the pace of the leaders but they were regaining speed and closing when my computer's live timing feed froze. I refreshed the screen and as the standings board sorted again Melandri was absent having crashed leaving Haslam the daunting task of catching the leaders while defeating the Green Hell.

Haslam qualified P8 and like his teammate had lost a spot after the start and was listed in P9 at the end of the first lap. The victims ahead of him would move him up in the standings to P5 but he was consistently loosing ground to the leaders. The Green Hell choose to torture him for the remainder of the race.

Baz on his Kawasaki would deal the next blow dropping him to P6 throwing him into an attack by Giutoli and his Ducati. Haslam would be defeated two laps latter. Camier and his Suzuki were next to punish Haslam. He would fight back for few laps and fall another spot after thirteen race laps were complete.

Up front Sykes was not able to hold off Biaggi for the length of the race. Biaggi over took Sykes while Haslam was falling to Camier. In short order Laverty and Davies would pass Sykes within a lap. Camier moved past Giuntoli for P6 moving Suzuki up a finishing spot in the race manufacturer point hunt. The Green Hell would move him to P5 as it took Baz and his Kawasaki as its final victim of the day.

Hopes of BMW putting a definitive stamp on the Manufacturer Championship instead were stomped on with an Aprilia 1-2-3.

The Green Hell shows no mercy in Race 2

Biaggi took race one. Something happened between his podium appearance and my knocking my coffee cup off the desk and he finished P13 in Race 2. Things continued darkly for BMW fans after that.

Sykes, Melandri and Davies formed a tight break away pack in the early laps of the race. Sykes was running for his life ahead of a carefully dueling Melandri and Davies. Things settled down until Melandri overtook Sykes for the lead in in sector 1 with 14 laps remaining.

Melandri was able to open a gap and hold it. Sykes began losing ground to Davies. With 12 laps remaining Melandri had 0.565 second lead on P2 Sykes, Davies was P3 3.2 seconds ahead of P4 Rea when he crashed. The Green Hell claimed another rider.

When the dust settled Davies had moved past Sykes to claim P1 leaving Rea in P3. The race challenge fell to Haslam shoulders. He was in P7. The BMW Italian contingent was far behind. Badovini was dithering in midfield while Fabrizio had Pit In behind his name.

Haslam had been dealing with fights in the second pack of riders. If he could break away could he reel in the leaders and pass other teams for manufacturer points. As the second half of Race 2 was beginning and I was sorting out the time challenge for him, Haslam's picture, number, team name and the word CRASH popped up on the screen.

Davies would hold on to the lead to win the race. Camier was able to briefly claim P2 for Suzuki but in the end lost it to Laverty but still claimed a podium P3 finish. Rea too had passed Sykes to finish P4. The Kawasaki rider had spent his tyres and energy coming home P5 just ahead of Checa and Ducati. Badovini came in P9 and last in the Manufacturer race.

Hamilton won the 2012 edition of Monza in strong fashion. Perez put Sauber on the podium P2 ahead of Alonso in P3. Massa, Raikkonen, Shcumacher, Rosberg, Di Test, Kobayashi and Ricciardo round out the points paying position. Vettel posted a DNF with engine problems and team orders forcing him to the side of the track on lap 48. Webber pulled a huge spin in Ascari a few lap latter. A trip to the pits for replacement tyres put him well down the grid.

When the lights went out Tim Reeves and Ashley Hawes let the rest of the field know what they wanted, they got a blistering start on their ÔÇ£The RelocatorÔÇØ LCR, Suzuki and led into the first corner, right with them was Ben and Tom Birchall on the Mitchells of Mansfield LCR, Yamaha, closely followed by Pekka Paivarinta and Adolf Hanni on the Team Suzuki Finland, LCR, Suzuki, they managed to get a good line into the corner but this caused Kurt Hock and Enrico Becker on their Hock Racing LCR, Suzuki to take a wider line but they held it all together and slotted in behind Pekka and Adolf, this gave Jorg Steinhausen and Gregory Cluze with their Steinhausen Racing LCR, BMW an opportunity to get right up with the leading four. It was good that all the 23 teams got a clean start for the final race....

BMW Motorrad confirms Chaz Davies for the 2013 season.

Chaz Davies lines up alongside Marco Melandri in the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship.

Munich/Milano, 9 September 2012. The rider line-up of BMW Motorrad in the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship takes shape. Chaz Davies (GBR) will ride a factory BMW S 1000 RR next season becoming the new team-mate of Marco Melandri (ITA). The 25-year-old Welshman is the reigning World Supersport Champion and is competing in his debut year in the FIM Superbike World Championship in 2012. He has had some strong performances throughout the season and has already stood on the WSBK podium four times, most recently by winning todayÔÇÖs second race at the N??rburgring.

ÔÇ£We are happy that we can welcome Chaz to the BMW Motorrad familyÔÇØ, says Andrea Buzzoni, General Manager BMW Motorrad Italia, who will take responsibility for the BMW Motorrad factory team from next season. ÔÇ£On his way through the ranks, Chaz showed how talented and fast he is. His title win in the Supersport World Championship in 2011 was impressive proof of that.
