At the time of the R 80 G/S launch in 1980, the idea of an all-terrain 800cc flat-twin was revolutionary, to say the least. Off-road motorcycles were rarely bigger than middleweight capacity and clearly defined in their specialised role. BMW’s radical new machine forced the birth of a versatile new genre – the R 80 G/S could tackle anything from urban and long-distance riding to off-road enduros. ...MORE

bmwblog.com: Exclusive interview with Dr. Klaus Draeger, BMW Board member and head of R&D

FWIW

I went to the Progressive International Motorcycle Show in Minneapolis on Sunday. Stopped by the BMW MOA stand. They were slow. Not surprising as the show was the small and rather boring. Leo's South a local BMW dealer south of Lilydale had a nice BMW display.

I spent some time in the Zero Motorcycle stand. Several geek type bikers werce asking good questions about batteries and charging times. I was learning a lot when the conversation turned to riding. It was reassuring that these electric riders and wannabes could get into a good discussion of riding. The issue of range came up again. The topic had been covered earlier in the sales pitch. I expected some fancy stunt riding around the topic but we were treated to creative charging tips instead. One suggestion was to find a stop with a 'coke' machine outside. “They are usually only take one of the plugs to run and most of the time you have three to choose from. Have a break and your bike has charge a bit while you were gone.”

Dreams and pinching pennies was a theme I kept bumping into as I wondered around looking a people looking at bikes. You could see the outlines of a fantasy form in peoples eyes as they threw a leg over a bike. Just as the fantasy would be bubbling up the price became the point of interest.

In my memory of past years when the biker wannabe settled into the saddle of the right bike the dollar signs would disappear as the fantasy grew into a dream and then an action plan of how to make it work. Not this year. The guy settling into the saddle was a little pudgier than the guy in my memory and thoughts of dollar bills seemed to be taking the smiles from their faces.

The only guy I met that seemed to really being having fun was the guy in the Central Racing Association stand. I asked him a opening question about racing. The next half hour was spent trying to catch up with him as he told me about his passion, his association how I could get involved as a corner worker and I dealt with the information. He beamed as he talked. The excitement was contagious yet in the back of my mind I thought of the article declaring that club racing is dying in America. It won't if that CRA rep has anything to say about it and he has a lot to say.

I am working through the literature and thoughts collected during my visit. No doubt the topic will come up again ; FWIW.

BMW Motorrad makes a good start to the new year. Best ever January sales figures.
TOP
07.02.2012
UPDATE
Munich. After a new retail record in 2011, BMW Motorrad has started off the new year with a solid plus. With sales of 5,237 units (previous year: 4,714 units), 11.1 % more motorcycles were delivered to customers in January 2012 than in the previous year.
Hendrik von Kuenheim, General Director BMW Motorrad: "After a record year in 2011, the new year has started very pleasingly for BMW. Never before have we sold as many motorcycles in the first month of a year as in January 2012. Our fresh new model range continues to attract strong demand all over the world, and the incoming orders situation is positive, too. With the market launch of the new maxi scooters C 600 Sport and C 650 GT this spring we are expanding our range to include the facet of "Urban MobilityÔÇØ and we anticipate additional growth impulse in 2012."
At the same time as the two scooter models, BMW has six new motorcycles to offer its customers: with the G 650 GS Sert?úo, the revised S 1000 RR, the special boxer model R 1200 GS Rallye, the updated F 800 R and the special models of the K 1300 R and K 1300 S, BMW Motorrad continues to strengthen its extensive product portfolio.
Based on this ongoing product offensive, BMW Motorrad looks confidently ahead to the upcoming season in spite of challenging economic conditions in some countries. Once again this year, the bestseller is likely to be the big travel enduro R 1200 GS.
Husqvarna Motorcycles, the BMW Group's second motorcycle brand, supplied 544 (previous year: 362 / + 50.3 %) motorcycles to its dealer network.
Alongside its core business in the off-road sports segments (sports enduro, motocross, supermoto), Husqvarna Motorcycles has extended its range to include street bikes with the models NUDA 900 and NUDA 900R. The brand is anticipating a significant increase in sales from the vehicles introduced to the market in December 2011.

Munich. After Dani Sordo (ES) and Carlos del Barrio (ES) finished second on the return of the brand to the legendary Monte Carlo Rally, the direction has now been set for a long-term MINI presence in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC): On Thursday 2 February, the F?®d?®ration Internationale de lÔÇÖAutomobile (FIA) accepted a two-car manufacturer entry by WRC Team MINI Portugal into the 2012 FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers. As a consequence MINI will complete the homologation for the MINI John Cooper Works WRC. The WRC Team MINI Portugal - consisting of Armindo Ara??jo (PT) and his co-driver Miguel Ramalho (PT), as well as Paulo Nobre (BR) and co-driver Edu Paula (BR) - will contest the remaining 12 events of the 2012 FIA World Rally Championship...MORE

FWIW

Hendrik von Kuenheim, head of BMW Motorrad, is also the current president of the ACEM (Europe's motorcycle manufacturer association). He wrote the following editorial for the current ACEM newsletter.

[EDITORIAL]

Dear Reader,

at the 8th ACEM Conference held in Brussels on January 24 I*disclosed the latest news about the European motorcycle market. In 2011, four years into the crisis, the Powered Two Wheelers sector achieved its lowest result with 1.7 million units corresponding to a 1 million units difference compared to 2007. 2011 marks a fall by another 9%.

Such a critical market depression generates difficulties for the whole sector. Many European suppliers are struggling with serious difficulties while others have no other choice than bankruptcy. Next to the revenue loss, this situation diverts resources, generates significant over costs, and disrupts production.
In these conditions, I can only stress the absolute need for the industry to have a stable, predictable and especially a feasible regulatory environment to underpin our long-term investment strategies

Notwithstanding the tough market conditions, at the 8th Acem Conference, motorcycle manufacturers delivered an important message, which - we believe - isn't related only to our industry but offers an insight into the future of mobility. "Innovating our mobility" through smaller, lighter and more specialised vehicles is the future envisioned by the European Union, which will lead to more efficient individual transport in terms of time and fuel savings, emissions reductions and an overall improvement of the quality of life, especially in cities. ACEM Manufacturers are involved in developing a new mobility paradigm. L-category vehicles, such as motorcycles, scooters, tricycles and quadricycles, represent an opportunity for an innovative mobility, which includes electromobility as part of the answer.

I wish to thank the speakers who helped us giving a full picture of how PTW fit into a truly innovative mobility paradigm. Mr Isaak Yperman from Transport & Mobility Leuven, for his research on how a shift from cars to PTW of only 10% would result in a 40% reduction in congestion. And Mrs Coralie Henry-Poppe of PSA Peugeot Citro?½n, for sharing with us her company's plan on making scooters part of their "MU" mobility services.

A special thanks also to FIM and FEMA, who accepted our invitation to be part of our conference with their own stand. We must not forget that the world of motorcycling entails also 35 million users EU-wide and millions of fan of motorcycle sports and ACEM is pleased to jointly put forward a message of sustainable motorcycling.

Enjoy your reading!

Munich / Woodcliff Lake. After three and a half very successful years as BMW Motorrad Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Hans Blesse (51) will be taking over as Vice President BMW Motorrad USA as of April 1, 2012. Pieter de Waal (60), who has held this position since 2008, finishes his successful career after 18 years with the BMW Group and goes into retirement. Hans Blesse's successor will be announced at a later stage...MORE

Woodcliff Lake, NJ  February 14, 2012 Ludwig Willisch, President and Chief Executive Officer of BMW of North America, has announced that Hans Blesse will assume the role of Vice President, BMW Motorrad USA, with a transition to begin April 1, 2012. Mr. Blesse succeeds Pieter de Waal, who will be retiring at the end of March after a successful 18-year career with the BMW Group...MORE

bmwmcmag.com: BMW Motorrad USA has a new chief. Hans Blesse (51) will be taking over as Vice President BMW Motorrad USA on April 1, 2012 from Pieter de Waal (60) who is retiring. Blesse began his BMW career in 1987 with the newly founded BMW Canada. After holding various positions with BMW Canada, he moved to...

FWIW: No matter how you feel about BMW, final drives, life, the universe or anything else; if you met Pieter Waal you walked away thinking he was a class act. Passionate about motorcycles, BMW and the person in front of him he will be sorely missed.

Body language says a lot. Unfortunately many a BMW motorcycle executive looks placed in the general area of a motorcycle. They may have a smile on their face but it is the one you would put on for a photograph you want to get over. Waal always had a ear to ear grin of a real rider. Even if he wasn't seated on a bike there was no doubt how he felt about them.

Waal was clearly a BMW executive and spoke as such when he talked. He was that rare executive the was willing to eschew handlers. He represented the company well. Yet it was clear he spent as much time if not more listening and then thinking about what he heard.

We love to grouse, belittle and badger BMW around here. Sometimes the company deserves it. But BMW motorcycling is in a better place today because we had Pieter Waal.

I wish him all the best.

BMW Motorrad Motorsport - WSBK - Winter Testing - Phillip Island
15.02.2012

Winter testing ÔÇô Phillip Island.
13th to 15th February 2012.

Phillip Island, 15th February 2012. The time for waiting is over: From 13th to 15th February most of the teams competing in the FIM Superbike World Championship tested at Phillip Island (AUS). It was the first battle on track in 2012 for the teams. During the private test, Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport continued its preparation for the 2012 season after having tested on Spanish soil in Valencia at the end of January. Factory riders, Marco Melandri (ITA) and Leon Haslam (GBR), completed a total of 1,954 kilometres of testing on the 2012 race version of the RR. The weather was mostly sunny and warm. The air temperature reached 32 degrees Celsius, the track temperature 54 degrees Celsius.

Programme:
While during the test in Valencia Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport focused on verifying the latest developments it has made over the winter, in Phillip Island the team worked on the set-up of LeonÔÇÖs and MarcoÔÇÖs S 1000 RRs. The crews worked on several chassis set-ups mainly in order to achieve performance and consistency. On top of this, the team worked on the engine management, setting up torque delivery and engine brake for the characteristics of the Phillip Island circuit.

The team has drawn a positive conclusion from the test. Both crews were able to evaluate important set-up changes that are not possible to be tested over the course of a race weekend. On the chassis side, the team found a rear end set-up that it will use for the race. Leon has already achieved a quite stable base set-up. During the official Infront test on Monday and Tuesday he will focus on race performance and do the fine tuning. Marco is still investigating the complete range of setting up the RR before concentrating on race performance.

The teamÔÇÖs technicians will now evaluate the data collected over the last three days and prepare for the official Infront test.

Marco Melandri:
Bike: BMW S 1000 RR, best overall lap time: 1:33.0 min
ÔÇ£We have worked hard in many directions on this test. The first day was pretty successful and we had a good base to work with. But unfortunately we were struggling to make more steps forward. We still have some issues with the front of the bike, which we tried to solve by making some changes. I still need to get more confidence in the front of the bike. When it was hot, it became more difficult for me. But anyway ÔÇô we need to be fast in every condition. Unfortunately we also lost three hours on the last day, when I crashed and we had to rebuild the bike. But now we have the time to analyse the information we collected and try to improve the bike at the next test. We still have two more days of testing before we go into the first race weekend, and I hope we are going to have good weather then.ÔÇØ

Leon Haslam:
Bike: BMW S 1000 RR, best overall lap time: 1:32.2 min
ÔÇ£The test has been good and really quite positive. It was nice to be back on the bike in warm weather. We have come here with the base set-up of our new bike from Valencia, and it worked pretty much straight away. Over the three days we had time to figure out the base set-up of the new bike, and to find the settings for this specific track, as we are racing here next week. Of course it is important to go fast around here, but it is also about exploring a little bit so you can make big steps in both directions to be able to understand what the bike is doing. I think we learned quite a lot. Also we had time to work on electronic strategies and we improved them a fair bit. The lap times were pretty good, we improved the consistency and were just trying a set-up in both cooler and hot conditions, which is quite important around here.ÔÇØ

BMW MOTORRAD ITALIA GOLDBET SBK TEAM - PHILLIP ISLAND ÔÇô TEST
15.02.2012
Phillip Island (Australia), February 15th 2012. The BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet Superbike Team completed a three day test at Phillip Island today. This was the first opportunity for Ayrton Badovini and Michel Fabrizio to get back on track after the end of the winter testing ban and was a good chance to continue their preparation for the 2012 World Superbike season opener which is scheduled for February 24-26.

The team focused on finding a good race set-up for the BMW S 1000 RR that would suit both riders. The evaluation of new parts continued, picking up from the work last November at the Portim?úo test.

Michel Fabrizio got more comfortable on the bike and, thanks to the number of laps he was able to put in, gave useful feedback about the S 1000RR behaviour on the Australian track.

After some productive work during the first two days of testing, Ayrton Badovini had an unfortunate high-speed crash at the long first turn following the finishing straight, in the morning session of the final day. The rider luckily escaped with only minor injuries but was still a little shaken, and it was agreed that Aytron would sit out the afternoon session, ending the test early.

Serafino Foti, Team Manager of the BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet Superbike Team, said:"It was a tough three days testing but we're happy overall. The work will continue at the official test next week. Michel put in a positive performance. Ayrton still has some work to do."

"He crashed at a speed of 250 km/h and he got away with only bruises. He was a little bit dazed afterwards so we both agreed to let him rest in the afternoon, to help him getting ready and motivated for the official test next week."

The large amount of data collected is now being analyzed by BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet Superbike Team engineers in preparation for the Official Infront Motor Sports Phillip Island Test, that will take place on the 20th and 21st of February.

BMW Motorrad Motorsport - WSBK - Infront Testing - Phillip Island – Monday
20.02.2012

Infront testing – Phillip Island.
20th to 21st February 2012.

Phillip Island, 20th February 2012. There were mixed feelings in Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport during the first day of official testing at Phillip Island (AUS): While Marco Melandri (ITA) made good progress over the course of the day, Leon Haslam (GBR) crashed during the first session at the exit of the Phillip Island Circuit’s Swan corner. Immediately after the crash he felt pain in his feet and was unable to walk. X-ray examinations at the circuit’s medical centre indicated a fractured right ankle.

Leon was taken to Casey Hospital in Berwick for further examinations. Computer tomography scans showed a fracture in his right tibia. After consulting the team doctor, Dr. Vincenzo Tota, Leon, together with the team’s management, decided to undergo surgery in Melbourne. A single screw will be inserted to fix the tibia fragment in its original place.

The prognosis on what will happen after surgery is not yet known, so a decision as to whether he will compete in this weekend’s races will be made later.

Leon Haslam:
Bike: BMW S 1000 RR, best overall lap time: 1:32.397
“This is just a disappointing situation, as we were making good progress. Right from the start my lap times were not bad. The crash was quite a big highsider just before the start-finish-straight. I landed on my heels, and I thought I could have fractured them. The scans later showed I had fractured the end of my right tibia instead. On top of this, I broke a small bone in my left foot, but this should not be a big issue. I now shall keep my fingers crossed that the surgery goes well and I will be back on the bike very soon.”

Marco Melandri:
Bike: BMW S 1000 RR, best overall lap time: 1:32.232
“We made steps in the right direction today. I was not very happy about the results of last week’s test, but we analysed all the data gathered over the last couple of days. The crew worked very hard. I have the feeling that we found a way to avoid chattering and to improve my feeling for the front of the bike. I feel a lot more confident on the bike now. Still we have a long way to go. Nevertheless, I am happy as we are all working in the same direction. We are not too far from the front runners, and this has been another step forward for me.”

BMW Motorrad Motorsport - WSBK - Phillip Island – Preview
19.02.2012

Australia – Phillip Island.
Preview.
24th– 26th February 2012
1 of 14 race weekends

Munich/Stephanskirchen, 19th February 2012. Green light for the 2012 FIM Superbike World Championship: the new season will officially get underway in the upcoming week. Phillip Island (AUS), close to Melbourne, will host the first two races on 26th February. Before then, Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport will take part in the official Infront tests, which are held in Phillip Island on 20th and 21st February. Last week the team completed a private, three-day test at the same venue.

Britain’s Leon Haslam will contest his second season as a BMW Motorrad factory rider in 2012. Last year he scored 224 points on his number 91 BMW S 1000 RR, finishing fifth in the Riders’ Championship. His new team-mate is Italian Marco Melandri, who lines up in his second year in the FIM Superbike World Championship and his first season for Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport. Melandri celebrated four victories in his debut season, ending 2011 as runner-up in the Riders’ Championship. The Italian’s RR will bear the start number 33.

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport enters its fourth season in the FIM Superbike World Championship, and the team has set itself some clear goals: to close the gap to the top teams and challenge for the title. The 2012 race version of the RR has been the subject of comprehensive further development. Brought in line with the new production version of the bike, it features improvements to the aerodynamics and chassis. The team has also optimised the BMW electronics. With the new one-bike rule coming into force this season, the bike has also been made easier to service.

Since the start of the year, the team has had a new Head of Race Operations, in the form of Andrea Dosoli (ITA). The rest of the management structure around BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director Bernhard Gobmeier remains unchanged: Stephan Fischer is Head of Development, while Josef Hofmann, the Managing Director of alpha Racing, assumes responsibility for the Stephanskirchen factory.

Phillip Island from the riders’ point of view:

Leon Haslam:
“I am looking forward to the official Infront test. It is another two full days. I feel that we now have a good base with the bike and we have a good understanding from the last test. We can now work on race runs and prepare for the race weekends. It is going to be quite an important test, as everyone is going to be there and we will all be on the same tyres. It will give us a good indication of where we need to improve.

On the race weekend itself we will, as always, be aiming to perform to the best of our ability. That is always our aim. Right now I am pretty confident that we can definitely challenge for the podium. Looking back to last year, all the BMWs were quite far behind at this stage and I was on the podium in the first race. Now, we are within a couple of tenths already and we still have a lot more to look forward to. So I am actually quite confident as we approach the weekend.”

Marco Melandri:

“At the moment, we haven’t yet started thinking about what we can expect at the race weekend. We are concentrating on what we need to do to improve my feeling for the bike. The rhythm will certainly be different, as will the lap times. At the moment I am not fast enough. However, we still have two more days of what will hopefully be positive testing to take steps forward and get faster for the season opener.

Generally speaking I like the Phillip Island circuit. I won there in 125cc, 250cc and MotoGP, and also claimed a podium finish there in the Superbike World Championship last year, so it has been a good track for me so far. I hope I will get the confidence that is lacking at the moment and take that next step forward.”

Phillip Island from the technical point of view:

Andrea Dosoli (Head of Race Operations):
“After the two tests held in Valencia and Phillip Island, we’re now looking forward to the official Infront test and the race weekend. The Infront test will be very interesting to really evaluate our potential compared to our competitors. Leon has already found a good base, he’ll use the next two test days to work on the fine tuning, while Marco and his crew will work hard to further improve his feeling for the front end of the bike. This is fundamental on a track with fast corners like Phillip Island.

It will be the first time to see in the garage only one bike per rider. This rule forces our team and our riders to approach the test and the race weekend in a different way compared to the past. On this track, with a severe tyre wear, variable weather condition and a bumpy surface it will be important to be consistent. We’ll work in this direction.”

Phillip Island from Pirelli’s point of view:

The Phillip Island track is always one of the most demanding for tyres on the Superbike schedule as they are subjected to heavy and constant thermal-mechanical stress, especially on the left hand side. Precisely for this reason, Pirelli is bringing two new solutions for the rear tyre, which will be available to the teams for the test sessions on 20th and 21st February. One of these is an SC1 compound and the other is a higher performance compound, midway between SC0 and SC1, which was custom created for the Australian asphalt and temperatures. The size of these tyres is also evolutionary compared to standard dimensions, being slightly larger in width and diameter, capable of providing a bigger contact surface. This helps reduce the stress this track places on the tyres.

Background:

Phillip Island is an island in the Australian state of Victoria, in the south-east of the continent, about 120 kilometres from Melbourne. It can easily be reached by car via a 640-metre bridge thank links the island to the mainland. One popular tourist attraction is the “Penguin Parade”: every morning countless little penguins leave their cliff caves and make their way over the beach to the sea, before returning in the evening.

Phillip Island may only have an area of 100km??, but the island does boast a long tradition of motorsport. The first 100-mile race was held there in 1926 and is now recognised as the first Australian Grand Prix. Back then, the competitors still raced on public roads. An unsurfaced circuit soon came into being and was used until 1935. In the early 1950s the “Phillip Island Circuit” was built right on the coast. It was opened in 1956 and has been the subject of several modifications since then. Located amidst spectacular scenery, the circuit is a permanent fixture in the calendar of the FIM Superbike World Championship. With the exception of 1993, the track has hosted the series every year since 1990. Since 2008, Phillip Island has been the venue for the curtain-raiser to the new season. Former BMW Motorrad factory rider Troy Corser (AUS) is the most successful rider at Phillip Island with seven victories and still holds the lap record, which he set back in 2007. The island also hosts the MotoGP series.

The circuit blends into the hilly coastal scenery and consequently features big changes of elevation. Gusts of wind of varying strength also blow in from the sea. The track itself has several key spots: it is essential to find the racing line in the first turn, “Doohan Corner”, in order to be well positioned approaching the demanding “Southern Loop”. From there, the “Bass Straight” leads downhill into the “Honda” hairpin. The final turn is also crucial: it is taken in fourth gear and the rider must attempt to take as much speed as possible into the start/finish straight, the “Gardner Straight”. At the same time, however, the riders must avoid being too aggressive and spinning their wheels.

In 2010, BMW Motorrad factory rider Leon Haslam (GBR) picked up his first pole position and first victory in the Superbike World Championship in Phillip Island. In 2011 the circuit was the scene of his first race on the BMW S 1000 RR and he immediately claimed a podium finish. His new team-mate Marco Melandri (ITA) made his Superbike World Championship debut in Phillip Island last year and went on to claim his first podium finish in the series.

BMW's Leon Haslam is hoping to make progress with the treatment for a suspected broken lower leg when he visits specialists in Melbourne, Australia on Tuesday.

Haslam crashed heading into the final corner of the Victoria state circuit after a highside which left him with a number of injuries including the broken leg and with both feet broken.

"It's really disappointing as we were making really good progress with the machine," said Haslam. "I can only hope that I can arrange the necessary surgery or whatever it's going to take to get me back on the machine for Sunday's races."

Something a bit different.

Next Monday the gang down at the Official-Fly-Overland coffee shop will be benchracing the SBK season opener at Phillip Island. Since the end of the 2011 I have been collecting notes, thoughts and even a rough draft to put together a prize winning preseason post. This ain't it.

I think I threw the notes out in a fit of clean related to a, now failed, New Years resolution related to cleaning and organization. The draft was no doubt garbage even our esteemed

The Bike | BMW S 1000 RR

The press has picked up on BMW marketing's line that it has been just two years since the introduction of the RR and we are getting a new bike. COOL...but I think there is more to the story. The Enigma Riders will be racing that new bike. In a few installments leading up to the Phillip Island WorldSBK opener lets look at how we got to the racing bike they will be riding.

IN SEARCH OF BIKE ZERO

With the outbreak of a new disease epidemiologist search for patient zero for a number of reasons. They look for the first version of the disease and in turn seek to understand how it has evolved and spread. In the process they hope to understand the disease, what defines it, how it was originally built compared to the current version and how it may evolve and expand in the future.

In 2009 World Superbike racing broke out at BMW. I'm not an epidemiologist and with all do respect to anyone who is what I propose to do is use this crude model to look at back to the outbreak's beginning where it has come and where it may be going.

Bike ÔÇô 0.0X ?
i-x6LNPzk-M.jpg

Picture caused a great deal of speculation when it appeared in the press. Was BMW going to race? Would they go racing in MotoGP or WorldSBK? BMW dismissed the news claiming to be using the 0.0X in the picture as a test bed for their F1 efforts.

I remember being more than a bit skeptical of their dismissal. A motorcycle seemed a strange test bed for development of F1 technology. The rolling and yawing of a motorcycle are very different than that of a F1 car presenting a very different set of problems to deal with. I was also dubious of the benefits of testing traction control and other electronics on a bike given the state of F1 rules at the time. Others dismissed the comment for their own reasons and all of us speculated on and on.

I doubt this is a picture of Bike Zero. I will leave finding that to another or at least another time. Yet we can learn something about the S 1000 RR's ancestry from the picture and comments. By sometime in 2005 the company was, if not committed to, developing a chain driven four cylinder option to take racing. The other point is in the dismissal. BMW had trouble with chassis design in F1 yet consistently produced compact incredibly powerful engine designs. Some of that design expertize would make it into the RR's heads and overall engine layout. But I may be getting ahead of myself.

R DNA in the RR

Around the same time 0.0X's pictured appeared there was great speculation about how the boxers. Could they go racing? Would they be competitive? The debate raged on but for many the answer hinged on two things. Could BMW design a overhead cam boxer engine that everyone seemed to think they would need to race and secondly how much weigh handicap would the new regulations put on two cylinder racers of any layout.

Twins are allowed more displacement to offset the theoretical advantage bikes with more cylinders have in creating horsepower. The rules assume engineers and designers will continue to develop their engines. To allow the general set of a particular rules to last more than one season handicapping weight is added or subtracted to balance the advantages gained or lost during development. The lithe Ducati twin is the benchmark for twins. Any rule would have to address them as its primary concern.

We would learn that yes the boxer engine could be developed and what a engine and bike resulted. The problem with the boxer and shaft drive combination was was the weight of the design before any handicapping weight was added.

BMW would send engineers and other representatives to the FIM meetings that would set the racing regulations for MotoGP and WorldSBK. It is safe to say these discussions made the decision for the company. They could and would build a elegant and powerful R racer but the weight the new rules would add was too much to overcome. The die was cast and BMW would go racing with an F1 inspired , chain driven four cylinder bike.

BMW would race their R 1200 HP Sport in endurance racing. Some would have us dismiss this as the other bike that did not survive the evolutionary cycle or racing. They have a point but a good helmet would cover it. If we do our epidemiological research properly we will see that the S 1000 RR has some R dna and both the race and production bikes owe a good deal to lessons learned with the racing boxer.

145497443_aNPaP-M.jpg

BMW had been hanging around with the F1 crowd and had learned more than a bit about the importance of aerodynamics and wind tunnel testing in racing. Combine this with the success it had with wind tunnels back in and around 1975 contributing the design of the R 100 RS released in 1976 and it should come as no surprise they would use them to develop their new race bike. Both boxer and four cylinder design teams would spend time in the wind tunnel. Their body designs wrap around very different bikes but shared the aerodynamic thinking of the day.

i-hpJF2wp-M.jpg

Leon Haslam getting the layout of his racer just right. This picture is from 2010 but by this time the bike had clocked many hours in the wind tunnel.

Development of the S 1000 RR bodywork would continue in the wind tunnel. The R racer would provide real world feed back on those design ideas.

The R contributed to the chassis development too. The rear subframe is a critical component for any bike. Both bikes would share similar thinking in this area. Again development would carry on at BMW while endurance racing would give real world testing. Feed back from the endurance pilots would impact the layout of the subframe. The extended on track demands of this kind of racing would go a long way to fleshing out design faults and weaknesses.

The production run of the R 1200 HP Sport was all to short but in its own way very critical to the production of the RR. Hand layup of racing body panels is one thing; however, these are racers that will have street going serial sort of clones going out by the thousands. Taking the R into low volume production allowed BMW to develop much of the technology and skills to turn those lovely racers into street going bikes.

leonhaslam.com: Haslam prepares for surgery on Thursday

BMW's Leon Haslam will have surgery in Melbourne, Australia on Thursday morning to repair the broken lower right leg injury sustained at Phillip Island during testing on Monday.
"I met with the orthopaedic surgeon earlier today and we've made a plan to get a couple of screws inserted," said Haslam on Tuesday. "I'm not sure if I'll be able to race and won't really know what's possible until Friday and Saturday when I see how much pain and swelling there is from the surgery."

Yesterday I had some fun looking for Bike Zero and how BMW came to race a I-4 chain driven bike. Today I want to talk about the first BMW S 1000 RR racing bike. Fist two bits of explanation for you.

The v1.X numbering
I have used a software type numbering system in my notes about the RR. In that system Bike Zero would be 0.0, the first version of the RR which we will discuss in a moment is v1.0 and the first bike in the 2012 season begins the 2.0 series of bikes. Within a racing season v1.1 would be the bike raced in the first race of the season and v1.13 the last race of the season. In my notes the three year run spans v1.1a to v1.39b. The a and b designations indicate race 1 and 2. I will leave it at that, to try and explain more would leave you as confused as the four of us inside my helmet.

Superbikes v Superbike Racers v WorldSBK
What a Superbike is has evolved since the R90S took the first AMA Superbike Championship. The evolution of the class of bikes has been in two ways. First the size of the Superbike has evolved from a 750cc I-4 and its varying sized counter parts to what we have today. The second is the direction of development of this class of bikes has changed from street – to – track to a track – to – street process.

With the advent of WorldSBK (which we'll get to in a moment) Superbike Racers at the various national levels such as the AMA, BSB etc. have inhabited a netherworld between the street and the WorldSBK bikes. Superbike Racers are clearly racing bikes but retain a much closer link to their street counterparts.

WorldSBK touts its SBK rules make the bikes a street racing class but the factory teams have used the fine points and loopholes of those rules to turn it into a prototype class. The SuperStock 1000 bikes are more closely tied to the street than the SBK bikes.

The WorldSBK rules also allows for the development of 'racing' parts. These parts turn the class into an interactive hybrid series. In way the continuous development makes this a prototype series creating degrees of separation from the showroom models in another, to the extent these parts and what is learned from them make it back to the street, it is a developmental and refining series.

BMW S 1000 RR v1.0 | Out of Africa

The search for the racing S 1000 RR v1.0 is far simpler than the search for Bike Zero. We only need to go to the archives for late 2008. There we will find the first releases for the bike at the Kyalami Race Track in South Africa. There is where we get the first look at the S 1000 v1.0 in testing.

Kyalami would be added to the WSBK calendar for 2009. In November and December of 2008 teams went there for private and public testing rounds. This allowed the teams to become familiar with the new track. It was on this stage we find Troy Corser on the the much anticipated BMW challenger.

This picture comes from a smugmug file of mine date November 6 2008.

We were also treated a data panel for the race bike.

The S 1000 RR would not be released to the common man for over another year. Given the time it takes to get past all the safety and emission tests required for street bikes this process was well underway when the race bike hit the Kyalami tarmac. It is also the closest the race bike and its street going counterpart would be until the Portimao testing introduction of the S 1000 RR v2.0 after the last race for the S 1000 RR v39b.

Lets break down the bike into major components and to look at the underlying assumptions of what BMW took racing. We'll keep it simple and chunk it into chassis, tyres, engine and electronics.

CHASSIS

The data panel gives very basic information about the chassis.

Wheelbase: 1,428 mm
Length: 2,056 mm
Width: 532 mm
Front suspension: ?ûhlins upside down telescopic forks, 43 mm diamete
Rear suspension: ?ûhlins TTX

What is perhaps more interesting is what it doesn't tell us. We don't have track, trail, steering angle or other information for the race bike for example. Remember those racing parts. Some of the numbers that we think are written in stone such as wheel base are in fact variable.

Strip away the bodywork and the racing RR looks like this.

i-h8jmXvc-M.jpg

October 2010 Magny Cour testing. Leon Haslam on a v1.26 or 27.

Most of us don't spend much time thinking about our chassis. Sure we change shocks/springs etc. But when is the last time you changed your swingarm to increase or decrease the wheelbase for a particular ride?

534365556_8EqYn-S.jpg

The chassis characteristics designed into the RR v1.X have more in common with the touring bikes than you may think. The pilots describe it as very stable. It quickly gained a reputation for liking high speed (read long straights) tracks and its chances being discounted on more technical tracks (the ones with lots of squiggly lines on the track map). Playing with the wheelbase is one way to deal with either. Longer wheel bases on the high speed tracks to increase stability. Short wheel base bikes turn quickly so back to the parts bin for the shorter swing arm.

On the other end there are changes that can be made with how forks could change steering geometry. How about changing yokes? All the parts and potential combinations give an incredible number of variations available to improve or confuse the situation.

TYRES

Wheels: Front 16.5 inch x 3.5 inch, Rear 16 inch x 6.25 inch
Tyres: Pirelli

Add wheels and tyres to a chassis and you have a rolling chassis. Duoh. As obvious as this is it would turn out to be the bane of the v1.X.

The series provides the tyres to the racing teams. Teams are allocated a fixed number of racing and qualifying tyres built and supplied by Pirelli. Team mangers draw lots to decide the selection order and the teams head down in that order and pick their weekend allotment. The RR has never liked Pirellis.

In 2009 it was the major complaint/excuse each weekend for the lack of performance. In all fairness up and down the paddock teams were complaining about Pirelli's quality control. Many complained there was none. Friday to Saturday the same bike with the same setup, same tyre compound, at the same time of day and weather conditions could have drastically different performance with the only difference being tyres.

Chassis setup contributes to tyre performance. Get it right great, get it wrong and that big box of racing parts sets you back. As the bike developed over its life the tyre performance did improve. Credit Pirelli yes. Credit the mechanics and engineers definitely.

The remaining problem seemed to be the tyres would fade past the midway point faster than the competition. In part we can blame the touring heritage the chassis tends to display. This puts a greater forces on the bike than other bikes. In part we can look to the engine and our next chunk of the bike.

ENGINE

The RR's engine rocked everyone's socks when it appeared for the 2009 season. There was a new horsepower sheriff in WSBK and it was wearing a Roundel.

Capacity: 999 cc, 4-stroke, 4 cylinder, liquid-cooled
Gearbox: 6 speed
Power: 200 + hp @ 14,000 + rpm
Bore & Stroke: 80 x 49.7 mm
Compression ratio: 14:1
Fuel system: 48 mm Dell?? Orto injection system
Lubrication: Wet sump

534398877_oRHcA-M.jpg

BMW didn't pull any punches. The engine is very narrow for a 1 liter I-4. The head design does draw on the F1 engine experience at BMW. The 14k of rpm may not be its limit. Theoretically it could spin up into the 16,500 range but doesn't for a number of reasons.

In 2010 Aprilia responded and reportedly cranks out more horsepower than the RR. BMW did not get involved in a horsepower war with Aprilia or anyone else. It was have enough trouble wrangling and putting those horses and the related torque to work to get involved in a war.

The chassis may have handled like an arrow underway in a straight line; however it did not like how it made power. Again the data panel does not tell the entire story. Peak horsepower may give you bragging rights but how does the engine produce it over its entire rpm range? In road racing it is how much torque is available at any given time. Anton Largiader does a better job of explaining the relationship between horsepower and torque than I am able.

At the beginning of the 2011 testing season hints that the team was focusing on engine development with an eye toward the torque and horsepower curves. The promotion of the BMW Italia team to SBK status allowed for two track development. The Motorrad team would develop the full 2011 design package. The Italia team would use a combination of the 2010/11 motor and chassis.

When I started racing in the sixties we took off air cleaners and filters to 'uncork' an engine. The idea was we were increasing the airflow available. Then came various ram induction systems that helped funnel more air into our engines. Airboxes on bikes became more sophisticated to the point you lost power by uncorking an engine.

The air induction and airbox in this picture spark my curiosity. The Torque and Power article points to a number of mechanical components that affect an engines ability to make torque. It also points out the importance of air induction systems in that lacking air torque begins to drop. I would like to know how much development has gone into changing this component.

ELECTRONICS

The electronics on a superbike are key to pulling all the elements together. The electronics on the street going RR have received great reviews. Conversely the race bike has suffered at the hands of the bits and bytes. A picture is worth a thousand words.

411537631_K9C9r-M.jpg

Ruben Xaus showing off at Kyalami in 2008

In the first day of the WSBK Kyalami test round the RR flirted with leading the pack. Troy Corser was excited because they had run without the electronics being fully turned on. What would day two have in store for them? Did they have a world beater in their hands.

No.

The times on day two were substantially worse. By the end of the final day Corser was 10th and Xaus 13th in a field of 15 bikes. Bikes 14 and 15 were SuperSports not SBK bikes. They were only a second off Xaus's pace. Since that day and over versions v1.0 to v1.39 the engineers have struggled with the development of electronics.

In the early races wheelie control was a major issue. The electronics for wheelie control were turned off after wheeling race starts and the riders would start the old fashioned way and feather their clutches to launch.

Once launch control was fully mastered we were treated to Corser executing a great start leading the field at the end of turn three only to give up the lead at some not to distant point due to unpredictable electronic power control.

The v1 bike has come a very long way in this area. Yet, for my money, the most important person in the pits right now is the programer for the race bike's electronics.

Superbikes v Superbike Racers v WorldSBK

The S 1000 RR Superbike has been a Bike of the Year winner and is regularly used by the press as the benchmark bike to measure other bikes in its class. To the delight of dealers and the people who buy them the RR rules the showroom. Superbike Racers have taken national titles with the bike on every continent. BMW Team Italia and Aryton Badovini took the Superstock 1000 manufacture and rider crowns for 2010. French Team 99 contended for the 2011 Endurance Championship right to the very end of the last race. Yet the WorldSBK bike has yet to make its mark.

FWIW

A Mulligan in a game is a do-over. Screw up your first tee shot and you put out a new ball and take another swing. It took BMW three WorldSBK rounds before pulling out the Mulligan bike.

Once again the street S 1000 RR v2 is a hit with the press. They are making comments like ÔÇ£the best got betterÔÇØ. That is the street bike they are talking about.

Last season Checa and his Ducati gave a demonstration in balance over coming muscle. Rarely the fastest bike on the track but in 2011 it was arguably the smoothest by balancing straight line speed with the ability to carry that speed smoothly through the corners. The balance between speed and handling allowed Checa to repeat the same times lap after lap.

When you get a Mulligan do you press harder or back off a bit and go for smooth? BMW appears to have chosen the latter with the S 1000 RR v2 race bike.

The Chassis: The early reports have the goal to be a more nimble bike. Without some design numbers we can only speculate how they are planning to achieve that. The early signs are promising. It is not uncommon for new racing machines to give ground to the competition before gaining it back. Before his accident Haslam was in third in test times minimally off the leaders while do it with some consistency.

Tyres: Pirelli continues to bring the racing donuts. How they hold up to the new chassis and the power plant it carries will determine just how far up the rankings BMW and the riders can climb.

Engine: The engine of the v2 will no doubt continue producing in the 200+ range. The + may be a bit smaller but more importantly is the shape of the power curves. The emphasis appears to have shifted from straight line power and resulting speed to balancing top speed with roll on power once the riders had dealt with the squiggly parts of the track map.

Electronics: Managing the engine and mating it with the chassis to control wheel spin, wheelie contorl (except after victories) and all the other things required is still a question mark for me. Malandri's concerns for front end feel may be part of it. The bike and several of its riders have crashed.

Overall the the most important guy in the paddock remains a geek.

Predictions -

Rider Championship: The injuries and the one bike rule screw everything up here. For example I was very keen on how Haslam would do but not so much now after the crash and surgery. Dang injuries. But a rider could be having a stellar season run only to have the one bike rule allow the field to catch up after a crash even if it did not result in injury.

Checa is the favorite to take the title; however, the title nod some are giving him is not as big as you might guess after his string of victories last year.

Any of the four BMW riders could give him a run for his crown if the v2 is the bike I think it may be. If BMW could take a historical mulligan and start its 2009 WorldSBK run with a v1 with the approach the v2 appears to be taking BMW would have a bigger trophy case.

The biggest question mark is Sykes and his Kawasaki. The question mark has do with tyres. The Kawasaki was often an early contender in the first half of a race. In the process it seemed to use up its tyres and begin to fade and fairly quickly.

My head says Sykes and the Kawasaki, my heart says Checa and the Ducati and I hope for an Enigma Rider. Honda will do well be does not seem to have come as far as the others. Aprilia seems to be pressing and that is never good. Suzuki is just hanging on.

Manufacturer Championship:
Ducati
BMW
Kawasaki
Aprilia
Honda
Suzuki

Maybe :laugh

That's what we came up with at the Official Fly-Over-Land coffee shop.

Keep in mind the afternoon we came up with this we were using real Irish Cream not that stuff in those little green plastic tubs.

As best I recall - The setting is a beautiful day at the ball park. The game is well underway the Ace of the Gashouse Gang is on the mound. We see him unexpectedly wave his catcher to the mound. In a background voice over a radio announcer wonders what is going on. The catcher and umpire exchange a quizzical look as time is called.

The shot shifts as he makes his way to the mound to a couple in the crowed stands. A a dotting girlfriend asks the same question the radio announcer had of her bespectacled boyfriend. The young man's chest puffs a bit as he begins to show his baseball geek side by explaining in detail the nuances of the strategy that will no doubt unfold in the mound conference. She looks up at him starry eyed hanging on his every word when the scene shifts once again.

The catcher arrives at the mound.

Whats going on?

A pregnant pause to allow build the movie audience's sense of anticipation then Dean speaks.

Does your grandfather still want to sell that shotgun? I was thinkin about goin duck hunting this weekend.

Totally befuddled the catcher replies, Yes as other curious teammates join the mound conference. The deal is struck, a weekend of hunting is planned and finally someone says lets play ball.

Dean assumes his pitching stance, hurls the ball delivering the final strike and the inning is over.

Back in the stands the awestruck young lady looks befuddled. 'All that talking for that?' His chest deflated the young baseball geeks looks at her and tries to recapture her awe. 'It's a complicated game dear.' She shrugs then cuddles up to him again.

:laugh

Racing weekends are complicated.

:rofl

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport rider Marco Melandri (ITA) will go into Sunday’s season opener of the 2012 FIM Superbike World Championship after setting a time that would put him on the provisional third row. Marco finished today’s qualifying practice at Phillip Island (AUS) in ninth position. His team mate, Leon Haslam (GBR), underwent surgery on his fractured tibia on Thursday morning. The operation went according to plan. After being declared fit in the morning to take part in Friday’s first free practice session by the circuit’s medical officer, the team management and team doctor, Dr. Vincenzo Tota, made a joint decision to let Leon complete two flying laps in qualifying practice later in the day. The circuit’s medical officer will review Leon again before a final decision is taken to let him ride on Saturday. BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet SBK Team rider Michel Fabrizio (ITA) finished qualifying practice in tenth, and his team mate Ayrton Badovini (ITA) was 18th.

Marco Melandri:
Fastest lap Free Practice: 1:32.888 min (P11)/Fastest lap Qualifying Practice 1: 1:32.553 min (P9)
“Today was difficult. We worked a lot on the bike, and improved it in some areas, but went in the wrong direction in some other areas. I still cannot carry good speed going into the corner. It seems we need time to get this fixed. Thanks to everyone for working so hard.”

Leon Haslam:
Fastest lap Free Practice: DNS/Fastest lap Qualifying Practice 1: 1:33.532 min (P21)
“The surgery went really well. A big “Thank You” to surgeon Dr. Blackney, to Dr. Vincenzo Tota, to the guys at the circuit and at Clinica Mobile for sorting me out. I only did two flying laps today to see how I felt on the bike. That was the objective, and we will now leave it until tomorrow. I did not want to do anything silly. Actually I was not pushing at all, but rather cruising around. If it is the case that I feel well enough and we believe we can be in the points then I would like to race.”

Andrea Dosoli (Head of Race Operations):
“We jointly decided to let Leon go out today in order to see if he can safely ride the bike. This test ride was not about performance at all. We did not want to take any risks, as Leon only underwent surgery on Thursday morning. He felt well on the bike. The circuit’s medical officer will review him again later. A decision as to whether he will ride tomorrow will be taken then. Marco worked on setting up his chassis and his engine brake during this morning. Although we have improved compared to Monday and Tuesday, it is not enough to be competitive at the moment. We are working hard to be there tomorrow.”

BMW MOTORRAD ITALIA GOLDBET SBK TEAM - PHILLIP ISLAND - PRACTICE DAY 1
24.02.2012
The BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet Superbike Team completed practice day one at Phillip Island, which hosts the 2012 World Superbike debut round this weekend. Michel Fabrizio and Ayrton Badovini finished 9th and 13th in free practice session one, and 10th and 18th respectively in qualifying session one.

The team continued to focus on race set-up for the BMW S 1000 RR and successfully tested the brand-new Pirelli B compound rear tyre. Michel Fabrizio continued his work on his bike set-up and improved his lap times during the course of the day, ending qualifying practice in 13th. The afternoon session was held in very hot conditions (27??C in the air, 53?? on the track).

Ayrton Badovini experienced a slightly more difficult day, as he was held up by traffic on his optimum fast lap during qualifying one. The delays meant that his best time was only good enough for 18th at the chequered flag.

Serafino Foti, BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet SBK Team, said: "It's not been a completely satisfactory day. Michel has done a good job and he ended up in a fairly good position. We can't say that we're happy with the 10th place, but things are shaping up well. Ayrton, on the other hand, had difficulties as he doesn't have the right feel with the front of the bike. We'll try to sort that out to allow him to move up the classification tomorrow morning."

Michel Fabrizio #84 - FP1 9th (1'32.790) - QP1 10th (1'32.609)

"Today went quite well. We're still working on the bike set-up. We've had some grip issues with brand new tyres. After a few laps the tyre behaviour improves a lot, but race wise we need to find a solution so that we don’t lose too much time in the beginning of the race. I'm happy about the new front tyre though. It gives me a very good response."

Ayrton Badovini #86 - FP1 13th (1'33.029) - QP1 18th (1'33.136)

"I can't say I'm happy, as I'm still not comfortable with the front end of the bike and I didn't manage to be as fast as I wanted to be. I also came across traffic on my quick lap. My combined best sectors put me at the same pace as my team mate. We need to do some more work. Tomorrow morning I will get one more tyre and the temperature will be lower which I'm sure will help."
