If I have my dates correct applications for entrance to the 2010 Dakar race closed today. The race will once again be held in South America. The motorcycle class has been restricted to 450cc this year. Here is the current list of
    Motorcycles entrants.

    On the Street

For most of mere mortals it is not time to head to South America as racer or fan but to our garages. I wonder how astrin is coming with his Madison Motorcycle Coop – concept? I thought of him when I came across this article over at The Kneeslider.com.

Once you are in your shop, either your own or a coop, what do you do if your background doesn’t include all the high school shop classes? Well you do what every other nerd does; your read first then go out and do hands on the project training. The Knucklebusterinc.com site has been running a series of articles, in their How To section, pulled from the pages of the likes of old Popular Mechanics that are timeless in the information they contain.

INDEPENDENT AUTOMOBILE REPAIR FACILITIES MAY HAVE IMPROPERLY INSTALLED CERTAIN SCREW CLAMPS THAT ARE LOCATED IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE FUEL LINES AND THAT FASTEN THE WATER SLEEVE TO THE THERMOSTAT CONNECTION. THE IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF THESE SCREW CLAMPS MAY DAMAGE THE FUEL SUPPLY PIPES.

H-D continues to make the news with its recovery process. This time it is bonds and TALF that play a role as Harley sells $562 million in bonds backed by motorcycle loans.

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (JAMA) reported OctoberÔÇÖs Production and Export Summary and it is not a pretty site. JAMA represents and reports the Japanese motorcycle manufactures also. For the previous 25 months JAMA has reported decreases in production, domestic sales, exports and revenue. October ÔÇÖ09 takes the string to 26 months for JapanÔÇÖs motorcycle manufacturers.

    - Motorcycle production in October 2009 was recorded as 51,018 units. Compared with the 120,123 units total recorded for the same month of the previous year, this is a decrease of 69,105 units or 57.5%.
    - Domestic sales (factory shipment) in October 2009 stood at 25,658 units, a decrease of 27.7% as compared with the same month of the previous year.
    - Motorcycle export in October 2009 was recorded as 41,143 units. Compared with the 90,702 units total recorded for the same month of the previous year, this is a decrease of 49,559 units or 54.6%.
    - Total value of motorcycles exported for October 2009 was $334.12 million including $229.94 million for vehicles and $14.18 million for parts. This is a decrease of $263.09 million or 44.1% as compared with $597.21 million recorded for the same month of the previous year.

When you look through the numbers it is easy to be a bit dismissive at first. We are accustomed to seeing numbers for the North American market reported in the big bike class which is 650cc and greater. The JAMA numbers are reported in four classes ranging from 50cc and under to the big bikes which for JAMAÔÇÖs purposes are over 250cc. Yet the revenues from the mix of large and small that pay for R&D for bikes like the VFR1200F that help push the market forward, pays for SBM racing at the national and world levels and more.

The two plus year downward slide puts even more pressure on new releases to be wheel standing successes. For Honda the VFR1200F seems to be doing a stoppie instead of a wheelie as far as MCN is concerned.

BMW national PressClubs are beginning to report November sales figures. The US only reports cages so lets move north of the border.

BMW Motorrad: Year-to-date motorcycle sales up 7.2 per cent .

BMW Motorrad Canada sold 37 units in November, down 38.3 per cent over November 2008. Year-to-date results are encouraging as Motorrad retail figures hit 1,764 a 7.2 per cent increase over the same period last year.

This is the second down month for Canadian sales but keep in mind the September 2008 BMW CA began a string of major sales increases due to new models, changes in pricing and a strong Loonie. BMW is not just making lemonade out of lemons when they say the Y-T-D figure is encouraging.

    When Illustration & Photography Collide

Images have a special power to evoke emotions and actions beyond those of words alone. BMW marketers are hoping to use the power of the following images on their target market to motivate them to go out and buy their S1000RR to take on the world. The article on the BMW Motorrad South Africa site uses words to explain the process and thought behind the images.

The trouble with images is they have a life of their own that can take them to places their creators never intended. Such is the case with Hell for Leather Magazine. HFL found elements of Frank Miller, Manga and even ÔÇ£Kill BillÔÇØ movies along with Mein Kampf and Leni Riefenstahl. Their readers found all sorts of things in the images and HFLÔÇÖs words.

I agree with commenter DeniesDanÔÇÖs choice of sound bites; ÔÇ£Sometimes a cigar is just a cigarÔÇØ. which brings us back to images.

The image I would really like to see is one of me riding off on a S1000RR.

As expected given the outcome of the York plant union vote:

    Harley-Davidson To Remain In York

Major Restructuring, Including New Labor Agreement, Provides Path to Significant Gains in Cost-Competitiveness, Flexibility, Efficiency

MILWAUKEE, December 3, 2009 - Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE:HOG) today announced it will keep its motorcycle operations in York, Pa., and move forward with plans to restructure those operations.

The announcement follows yesterday's ratification of a new seven-year labor agreement by company employees at York, represented by International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local Lodge 175, and today's decision by the Harley-Davidson Board of Directors to approve the restructuring plan and related funding.
"A restructured York operation will enable the plant to be competitive and sustainable for the future, and the new labor agreement is critical to making that happen," said Keith Wandell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson, Inc. "On behalf of the Company, I want to thank the employees at York for their vote to make the changes necessary to create a more flexible and efficient operation, and we look forward to moving ahead together to achieve that goal," Wandell said.

The new York operation will be consolidated under one roof and focused on the core areas of motorcycle assembly, metal fabrication and paint.

The operation will have a smaller, more flexible workforce, corresponding to the scale and scope of the operations, with about 1,000 hourly employees compared to about 1,950 today. The workforce will consist of about 700 to 800 full-time unionized production and maintenance employees and, on an annualized basis, approximately 200 to 300 unionized "casual" employees. Casual employees work as needed, depending on seasonal production and volume needs and to provide coverage for vacations and other absences.

The operation will also employ about 150 salaried employees, compared to about 270 today.

When fully operational in 2012, the restructuring is expected to generate about $100 million in annual operating savings compared to the current structure.

The Company expects to incur approximately $200 million in restructuring charges related to York into 2012, of which about $100 million will be cash charges. The Company also expects to make capital expenditures in connection with the York restructuring of about $90 million into 2012.

On a combined basis, the Company expects previously announced restructuring activities, together with the additional restructuring of the York operations approved today, to result in one-time charges of $415 million to $445 million into 2012, and to produce annual ongoing savings of $240 million to $260 million upon completion of all announced company-wide restructuring activities. In 2010 on a combined basis, Harley-Davidson expects to incur restructuring charges of $175 million to $195 million and related savings of approximately $135 million to $155 million.

The financial impact of the York restructuring reflects approximately $15 million in incentives that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has committed for capital improvements and training.

"I want to acknowledge and thank Pennsylvania Gov. Rendell and his team for their support of the changes we are embarking on at York. They have been terrific to work with throughout our decision-making process," said Wandell.

The decision to remain in York concludes a two-path assessment that began in May to determine whether the York operations could be restructured to be cost-competitive and sustainable, or alternatively whether the company would relocate those operations elsewhere in the U.S. In recent weeks, the Company identified Kentucky as the focus of its alternative site assessment.

"We also thank Kentucky Gov. Beshear and his team for their tremendous efforts, as well as the many Kentucky state and local officials who have been so helpful and gracious and who have devoted significant time and attention to our possible relocation," said Wandell.

    Fiscal 2008-09

    Turnover: EUR 454.6 million

    Vehicle sales: 64,080

Earnings after restructuring costs: EUR -81.4 million

    Equity ratio: 27.8%

Positive operating result expected in fiscal 2009-10

Tough restructuring completed in fiscal year 2008-09
"The past fiscal year proved to be the most difficult in KTM's recent history. However, we responded with strong restructuring measures. In fact, one-off restructuring costs account for 80% of the negative EBIT. Despite the slump in the markets, above all in North America and Europe, we succeeded in maintaining our market position and increasing market shares," says Stefan Pierer, CEO of KTM Power Sports AG.

Capacities adjusted to future market environment
Capacities and overheads have been realigned to the reduced market level. In the past fiscal year, KTM had to axe over 450 jobs and used the existing short time working schemes in the period from May through September.

X-Bow to remain in KTM product portfolio, investment completely written down
Due to the economic crisis, the original business model of X-Bow serial production was no longer feasible. Marketing and sales activities are now therefore integrated in the Mattighofen plant. KTM has written down all the serial production development costs and production tools totaling EUR 33.1 million. In X-Bow production, KTM has opted for a model often used in the high-end sports car sector, namely manufacture to order and customization on request. This has resulted in a shift from serial production to building cars to each individual customer's specifications.

Outlook: positive operating result in fiscal year 2009-10
KTM is still expecting the motorcycle market in general to decline in the 2009-10 fiscal year. Thanks to new product developments, particularly in the profitable core segment of off-road competition, a slight increase in sales can however be anticipated. A completely new motocross generation will be rolled out at the end of the 2009-10 fiscal year. The new street models from the cooperation with Bajaj Auto Ltd. were presented to the public at the beginning of November. Given the cost cutting and optimization program, the Management Board is expecting a positive operating result and a substantial improvement in free cash flow.

    Hi Mika!
Once again I want to thank you for Morning Reads. While I admit I do not necessarily read it "cover to cover" I do regularly find something of interest and/or an article or video that brings me up to speed on a topic of which I was unaware.

The S1000RR campaign has me thinking two ways. In reacting to the imagery from an art sense it's really something, does remind me of Frank Miller.
In another sense I can see where this kind of stereotyping could possibly ruffle some feathers.
Regardless I think the S1000RR has great potential, now can BMW put together a winning season? We shall see. I would love to see how that bike performs at the Isle of Man TT.

The Asphaltfighter?« Stormbringer is some kind of monster. I think it's a mule for technology that is either in it's infancy or just a little beyond that. Exciting to see what's just beyond the horizon, isn't it?

    --

Finally the bike candy, I do enjoy. This morning's R50S confirms again that I do appreciate the vintage stuff. Although I own no vintage bikes and quite frankly couldn't mechanic my way out of a wet paper sack I can appreciate the efforts of others.

    Thanks, man!

The satellite team stories keep rolling in this one from motorsport-total.com is more of the same but no news on any official BMW website or PressClub that I have found. 2010 is going to be a great year to follow the S1000RR in many series. ÔÇ£I [wonÔÇÖt] mention any names. Only this: I assume that we will compete with an experienced pilot and a junior rider. This mixture there was with us earlier on several occasions, and it is working well for us well."

On the heels of the satellite team stories comes another from MotoStation.com who says BWM France has confirmed that BMW will be taking the S1000RR endurance racing in 2010.

    BMW Group November sales numbers are in. Overall they are up but the motorrad segment follows the motorcycle trend and is down. For the selective readers in the group;

BMW Motorcycles sold 5,503 (prev. yr. 5,773 / -4.7%) motorcycles worldwide in November. For the year to the end of November, 81,946 (prev. yr. 94,237 / -13.0%) motorcycles were delivered to customers

The numbers are encouraging. There is no where near the blood red ink on the floor that other manufacturers are finding in the columns of numbers they track. Yet I would be hearing footsteps coming up from behind if I were walking the halls in Munich.

BMW Motorrad is a destination brand. Riders normally come to BMW after working their way through various other brands. For example, the average age of a BMW rider in any market year has always been 5-7 years older than the rest in reports I have seen.

With that in mind I would be a little cautious about what these numbers tell us. Yes BMW motorrad sales are declining at a much slower rate than say the Japanese more than 50% decline. However; as a destination brand are the sales destined to decline father down the road for BMW, and at a time when others are recovering and showing gains, because other manufacturers are not putting riders in the tank now?

    The full press release follows.

BMW Group retail grows 11.5% in November

    ÔÇó Press Release

BMW sales 11.1% higher; MINI volumes up 13.8%
Successful start for BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo and BMW X1

Munich. BMW Group sales continued their upward trend in November. Overall, the company delivered 11.5% more vehicles than in the same month last year at 107,686 (prev. yr. 96,609) units. Since the start of the year, 1,162,510 (prev. yr. 1,323,453 / -12.2%) BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce have been sold worldwide.

Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing: ÔÇ£Since September, sales have been back on the growth track. In November we achieved another substantial increase in our global deliveries. We intend to continue this trend in December.ÔÇØ

In the month under review, sales of BMW brand automobiles rose to 90,383 units (prev. yr. 81,386 / +11.1%). A total of 963,712 (prev. yr. 1,104,983 / -12.8%) BMW vehicles were sold in the year to the end of November. Almost all BMW model series made gains. In November the strongest growth came from the BMW Z4, with an increase of 149.3% (1,760 / prev. yr. 706), and the BMW 7 Series, with gains of 57.1% (5,025 / prev. yr. 3,198). The BMW 1 Series saw growth of 11.7% (16,614 / prev. yr. 14,877), while the BMW 3 Series and the 5 Series reported gains of 3.4% (32,230 / prev. yr. 31,168) and 3.7% (14,164 / 13,665) respectively. In November growth was also driven by the X5 and X6 models, which registered total sales of 11,515 units (+3.6% / prev. yr. 11,120). The new BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo and BMW X1 models introduced in late October are being very well received by customers ÔÇô new orders for both are well above plan. No less than 2,940 BMW X1 and 1,110 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo were already delivered to customers in November.

MINI brand volumes were also considerably higher in November. With sales of 17,199 (prev. yr. 15,113) vehicles, deliveries rose 13.8%. For the year to the end of November a total of 198,163 (prev. yr. 217,415 / -8.9%) MINI cars were sold. In the past month Rolls-Royce delivered 104 automobiles (prev. yr. 110 / -5.5%). Between January and November 635 (prev. yr. 1,055 / -39.8%) of the brandÔÇÖs vehicles were delivered to customers around the world.

With gains in Europe, Asia, Oceania and Africa the BMW Group was able to improve its sales figures on almost all continents in the month under review.
In Europe 63,999 vehicles were sold (prev. yr. 57,187 / +11.9%), the majority ÔÇô 59,698 units ÔÇô in the major established markets of Western Europe (prev. yr. 53,972 / +10.6%). However, in Eastern Europe, also, all signs pointed to growth in November, with a total of 3,291 (prev. yr. 2,868 / +14.7%) deliveries.

In the Asian region, 33.3% more vehicles were sold in the past month (16,030 / prev. yr. 12,030). The trend in AsiaÔÇÖs largest market, China, remained extremely positive, with sales climbing 39.7% to 8,470 vehicles (prev. yr. 6,062). In Japan, AsiaÔÇÖs second biggest market, the BMW Group sold 2,885 units (prev. yr. 2,788 / +3.5%). But there were also welcome gains in many smaller Asian markets. For instance, in November sales increased 140% (103 units) in Indonesia, 139% (980) in South Korea, 136.8% (315) in Malaysia, 94.1% (295) in Thailand and 57.1% (256) in India.

In Oceania the company sold 28.4% more vehicles, with 2,051 (prev. yr. 1,597) deliveries in the month under review.

The BMW Group was also able to increase sales in Africa (+10.3% / 2,125 deliveries). South Africa, in particular, was once again the continentÔÇÖs number one volume market with sales of 1,583 units (prev. yr. 1,450 / +9.2%).

With 15,708 (prev. yr. 15,217) deliveries, the BMW brand achieved a 3.2% increase in the month under review in the USA, whereas the MINI brand, with 2,564 (prev. yr. 4,545) deliveries, experienced a decrease of 43.6%. As a result, in the USA the level of sales for the BMW Group was down by 7.5% (18,272 / prev. yr. 19,762) compared to November 2008. However, the South American markets maintained their strong growth trend last month. For instance, deliveries in Brazil climbed 415.5% to 897 (prev. yr. 174) and Argentina reported an increase in sales of 37.6% to 249 (prev. yr. 181) units. Overall, the BMW Group reported a decrease in sales of 1.3% in the American markets (23,345 / prev. yr. 23,653) last month.

BMW Motorcycles sold 5,503 (prev. yr. 5,773 / -4.7%) motorcycles worldwide in November. For the year to the end of November, 81,946 (prev. yr. 94,237 / -13.0%) motorcycles were delivered to customers.
