Bench Racing & The Morning Reads

Jordan, thank you for the heads up about the birthday link. I have been lazy lately and have not checked it when I preview the post. I probably nicked the template I have for it when I updated it one day.

The bike is really something isn’t it. It is a R69S breathed on by the people at Ritmo Sereno Euro Motorcycle Shop in Japan. They do some incredible work. I have included Bike Candy from this shop several times. Siroh Nakajim is the CEO and I follow his blog. My computer is not set up to deal with Japanese or translations but the blog is full of excellent photographs that I can sit and study for much longer than I should. Their site is fun to explore, even with language difficulties so follow the links and explore. There are some English headers. Check out the Used Bike header. They give you a profile shot of the bikes listed. Click on the model for the pictured and more pictures will be revealed.

Ian, Vince has asked permission to do what you suggested a couple of times. I gave it. When or if that link happens is, as is often said, “above my pay grade”
:ha

I will look into the tractor question. It slipped past me when I viewed the video the first time. I was multi-screwingup err tasking at the time. If or when I find some more information I will post it.

I am always open to questions and suggestions for searches or topics any of you would be interested in.

Thank you for the comments. :blush

During the BMW Motorrad GS Trophy 2010, on day 3, I believe they were pulling a Porsche tractor ? Is this a little dig between companies in the Fatherland ? Paging M1KA PI.

i did notice that and thought exactly the same thing. :nod

autosport.com: Todt ÔÇô New tracks must create passing

This sounds expensive and I fear will result in more boring races than F1 fans have endured in the past. The solution to the passing problem (if in deed it really does exist) may be as simple as eliminating the blue flag passes for the first time you put a driver down a lap.

The teams in front are the fast ones with all the development money. Mid pack and back are the slow poor guys and they seemed to pass each other on a regular basis this season. The guys up front need clear air and a straight away to pull off a pass or the help of a blue flag.

Taking away the blue flag will slow the leaders down once they come up on back marker traffic. If they have to pass back markers without the help of the blue flag their chassis designers will figure out a way to do it. There is no incentive for them to do it under the current rules.

Drivers qualify with flying laps that they and the teams carefully stagger to avoid traffic. The emphasis is on handling and speed not passing ability. In the race the hope is to break away from the field and have open track. This is done two ways. Be in front in the beginning of the race and run for day light. Develop a pit stop strategy that moves your car into a open slot on the track and do your passing when the other guy is sitting still in the pit getting fresh rubber. Either way if you are in the lead you will never be appreciably slowed down by a back marker because the blue flag comes out and they must yield the track line to you. That is not racing or passing it is traffic control.

Take away the blue flag and the fast rich guys in front will design cars that can pass and the slow guys will copy them.

It is so simple. If Mr. Todt would only stop by the Official Fly-Over-Land coffee shop we could explain it to him. Better yet invite us over to Paris for coffee and send his jet to pick us up. I understand the City of Lights is beautiful this time of year.

FWIW

Dear Santa,

I am not writing for myself, or even this year. I know I have been a bad boy this year and fully expect a lump of coal in my stocking. (Actually if it is low sulfur coal I could use it to help with heating. Oops I may have just blown that too!). I am getting a request in for people at BMW Motorrad Motorsport and BMW racing fans for 2012.

There have been all sorts of rumors lately that BMW will be joining MotoGP in 2012. That is the year MotoGP goes to the liter bike formula. I am really excited about that and I hope that BMW and you make that happen because racing fans will really be happy to find that under the tree. But that is not why I am writing, although I really do hope you and BMW will give us a present of a MotoGP team ( but I guess I already said that ÔÇô sorry Santa), rather I am writing to ask for something racing but a bit smaller. I wonder if you could find a way to give us a BMW Moto3 bike along with the MotoGP bike? I know this may sound greedy but if you think about it Santa it makes a certain amount of sense, would be really cool and could help BMW pay for all this racing in the long run.

Santa I know youÔÇÖre in to reindeer racing and probably snowmobiles (or at the North Pole do you call them snow machines?) so let me explain this Moto__ stuff a little bit.

The FIM makes up the rules for motorcycle racing classes. It has three prototype series. There is MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3.

The biggest is MotoGP. It has the biggest engines. In 2012 they will be 1000cc with a maximum of an 81mm bore (just like the bore on the S1000RR). Then they take these engines and put them into prototype frames and race them on race tracks.

The next class is Moto2. The simplest way for me to explain this to you Santa is for you to think of it as a sleigh builders racing class that all use clones of the same reindeer team. Everyone racing in the class uses a prototype frame. They design it or in some cases buy it but it is not a street bike frame. Everyone has to use the same engine. The elves over at Honda make them right now. I kind of think of it as a master class for frame and suspension designers.

In 2012 the FIM is going to have Moto3. This is really cool Santa. Think of having a really good sleigh designer build you a sleigh to be pulled by one reindeer to go racing with. That is sort of what Moto3 is.

Moto3 is a prototype class built around a 250cc four stroke engine with a maximum bore of 81mm.

MOTO3 REGULATIONS
Engine

4-stroke reciprocating piston engines only.

Engine capacity: maximum 250cc.

Single cylinder only.

Maximum bore size: 81mm. No oval pistons.

Engines must be normally aspirated. No turbo-charging, no super-charging.

Crankshaft speed limited to maximum: 14,000 rpm.*

Maximum of 1 ignition driver.*

Maximum of 4 valves.

Pneumatic and/or hydraulic valve systems are not permitted.

Valves timing system drive must be by chain.

Variable valve timing and/or variable valve opening systems are not permitted.

Engine Supply

The engine is defined as the complete engine including intake system (throttle body, injectors), and one complete transmission.

The maximum price of the engine must not exceed 12,000 Euro. No optional parts or service contracts may be used to circumvent this price limit.

Each engine manufacturer must undertake to supply sufficient engines and spare parts to supply minimum 15 riders per season, if requested.

Each engine manufacturer must submit a spare parts price and lead-time list for the season for approval by the Organiser, and may not charge more than these published prices. Approval is based on the prices and lead-times being in line with current market norms for these parts and technologies.

In the event of engine updates or upgraded parts being developed, these must be made available to all customers at the same time, and respecting the price limits described above.

You can see some of the ties to MotoGP canÔÇÖt you Santa? The reason I am asking for this bike early is, well, it may not be as simple as slicing one cylinder off the MotoGP bike and building a 250cc engine with an 81mm bore.

Many of the kids that know about these kinds of toys say you may want to make the bore a little smaller and the stroke a little longer so the engine makes a bit more torque. (The torque weÔÇÖre talking about here is not the torque like my mom and dad getting torqued off when I hid under the dining room table waiting for you and ate the cookies and drank the eggnog they left for you. Bye the way Santa you should thank me for that. The eggnog tasted strange and made me feel funny. I donÔÇÖt think you would have liked it no matter what my dad said. No this is the torque that provides the pulling power to the bike. Think of it as reindeer grunt power to get the sleigh moving.) There may be a difference in bore and stroke required between the two engines but the smaller engine could still be a great design testing laboratory and could end up being a building block for other sized street engines for BMW Motorrad to sell and help pay for the racing toys.

Santa the talk on the playground is the Honda Yamaha Suzuki and Kawasaki families are going to get these kinds of bikes for their kids. The Ducati family already races MotoGP bikes and has a long history of building two wheeled toys with single cylinder engines. Maybe they will be doing it again. The Aprilia family has been racing for a long time. There is talk that they will join MotoGP in 2012. Maybe they will have a Moto3 too.

I know IÔÇÖm not supposed to want a toy just because all the cool kids or all the other kids have one but Santa please. Moto3 is a really exciting new racing class. It has the potential of generating engines and bikes that will get factories and people interested in entry level bikes that are fun and sporting. If you talk with the Gnomes at BMW see if you can convince them of this. They could sell a bunch of 250cc and 500cc sport bikes in the new markets they are going into. I would even like to have a 250cc BMW sport bike to play with on the double letter roads in Wisconsin. (I promise I wonÔÇÖt speed Santa I promise.)

Anyway thank you for reading my letter Santa. I will write you again about this.

I hope you will like the cookies we make for you this year. I have already been testing eggnogs and I will make certain that you get some this time.

Thank you Santa,
Mika

P.S. Check out VoniÔÇÖs Dakar thread. There is a link to an exercise video by Cyril Despres that will help build your body to handle the reindeer team Christmas Eve.

I track 35 caf?® racer sites on a regular basis. I spent some time catching up on things there while savoring a {url= http://www.packers.com/ ]Packer[/url] victory and came across the Karuser Domani, a very future oriented three wheeler with two wheel drive designed and built in conjunction with LCR-Sidecar on The New Caf?® Racer Society site.

In 1989 the first of these Superside inspired street going rigs was built. The traditional three wheeler is a two wheeler with a side car attached. The Domani takes a different approach using an tubular frame that integrates the side car into its structure. The first models used the K100 engine and final drive Power currently is supplied by a K 1200 engine and drive train. If the frame and bodywork are future oriented the front suspension adds more in that direction. The hub center steering seems much more natural in this setting than in some of the two wheeled applications it has been found. Over 100 units have been built and sold during this time.

returnofthecaferacers.com: Mac dreams become a reality.

Mac Motorcycles has been a fun story to follow in the news and on their blog The Chin Wag. The opening story along with some exploration of the Mac Motorcycles site go a long way in explaining why. The story of a small concept building overcoming the obstacles presented by development and the marketplace are always a fun read for me. What is even more fun is to imagine what if.

What if Santa and BMW deliver on a childish Christmas dream and build a 250cc engine for Moto3. It could provide the basis for a variety of new sporting singles that deliver on a dream similar to that of Mac Motorcycles. These would be bikes that deliver a balance of engine frame and suspension that calls on the rider to be in command, not the manufacturerÔÇÖs engineers or programmers, to engage and test the riderÔÇÖs skills working with the bike between their legs to draw out its performance.

It is not that there is not a history of such bikes in the BMW line to build upon with a modern sporting 250cc single or larger.

THE 2011 BMW G 650 GS
ÔÇó 23.11.2010
ÔÇó Press ReleaseThe Success Story of the BMW Motorrad Single Cylinder Continues

Woodcliff Lake, NJ  November 22, 2010 BMW Motorrad has added yet another attractive member to its BMW GS family with the introduction of the new BMW G 650 GS. With its lean, wiry off-road stature, the new single-cylinder enduro cuts a light and adventurous figure and stands out clearly from its rivals in terms of quality, equipment, and comfort. In conjunction with its relatively low weight and the low seat height, it offers an attractive means of entry to the passion of motorcycling and the fascinating world of BMW GS adventure.

New updated version with a high torque and low consumption single-cylinder engine.

This liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with double overhead camshafts has a displacement of 652 cc, delivers 48 hp at 6500 rpm, and develops a maximum torque of 44 lb/ft.

Due to electronic fuel injection, twin-spark ignition, high compression ratio of 11.5:1, and a closed-loop catalytic converter, this single-cylinder engine is designed for maximum riding pleasure with the best possible efficiency and minimal environmental impact. Low consumption values of only 3.2 liters per 100 km at a constant 90 km/h (approximately 66 mpg city) are possible.

In conjunction with the claw-shifted five-speed gearbox, the high-revving single-cylinder engine in the new BMW G 650 GS offers increased performance on winding back roads. Its beefy torque curves and quick response also allow detours to be handled with supreme ease beyond asphalt roads.

Suspension technology.

The suspension of the new G 650 GS was developed primarily for riding on back roads and utilizes a bridge frame of steel tubing and a bolt-on rear frame. The front wheel is controlled by torsionally rigid telescopic forks, the rear system a solid dual swing arm of square steel sections in conjunction with a monoshock linked via a lever system.

The brake system consists of a single brake disc at the front and rear. The BMW Motorrad ABS, available as optional factory-installed equipment, can be deactivated for off-road riding.

Typical enduro design and color concept in the style of the BMW GS family.

The body of the new G 650 GS is completely redesigned. The front section makes the single-cylinder enduro light, sporty, and dynamic.

The engine, exhaust covers, frame, swing arm, and fork tubes, which are all black, contrast with the colors of aura white and orange-red as well as the matching two-tone seat.

The new BMW G 650 GS will be produced at the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin Spandau.

The following is an overview of the primary features of the new BMW G 650 GS:

Technology and Design
High torque, economical single-cylinder engine.

The heart of the new BMW G 650 GS is the 652 cc single-cylinder engine with four valves, double overhead camshafts, electronic fuel injection, and twin-spark ignition. With a power output of 48 hp at 6500 rpm and a maximum torque of 44 lb/ft at 5000 rpm, coupled with its low weight of only 423 lbs with a full fuel tank, it is the perfect enduro on back roads and easy terrain.

A counterbalance shaft suppresses vibrations. In conjunction with a closed-loop catalytic converter and the engine controller BMS-C II, this engine with its twin-spark ignition conform to all applicable emission regulations. Additional benefits are ride comfort, throttle response, and remarkably low fuel consumption.

With a compression ratio of 11.5:1, the engine is designed for a fuel quality with an octane number of at least 91 RON. At a constant 90 km/h, fuel consumption is only 3.2 liters per 100 km (approximately 66 mpg city), so ranges of 215 miles and more are possible. Engine cooling is assured with 0.34 gallons of coolant. The coolant level can be checked easily using the inspection window integrated in the GS inscription on the left side.

Power is transmitted by a claw-shifted five-speed gearbox. As usual for the enduro segment, the secondary drive is transferred via an O ring chain. For improved acceleration, particularly when starting off or passing, the enduro features a relatively short secondary ratio with 16/47 teeth (1:2.937).

Suspension handling with the ideal combination of back road and offroad qualities.

Strength typical of enduros, the new BMW G 650 GS has a tubular bridge frame of steel sections with bolt-on rear frame. The dual swing arm is supported against the frame via a monoshock and lever deflector and is made of a stable square steel section.

The telescopic forks are equipped with a fork stabilizer and a fixed fork tube that is 1.6 inches in diameter. The spring travel is 6.7 inches at the front and 6.5 inches at the rear (low suspension 5.5 inches / 5.1 inches), so moderate seat height is combined with offroad practicality that is suitable for easy terrain.

Easy off-road rides are mastered with the redesigned cast light alloy wheels equipped as standard. For improved riding stability at higher speeds, the rear wheel rim was widened from 3.0ÔÇØ to 3.5ÔÇØ. Tires in the sizes 110/80 R19 59V and 140/80 R17 69V are installed on the 2.50 x 19ÔÇ£ front rims and the 3.50 x 17ÔÇØ rear rims respectively.

The frame of the new BMW G 650 GS is designed for the greatest possible agility on back roads, but without sacrifice to comfort. The high degree of riding stability, steering precision, and handling inspire confidence even in new motorcyclists.

Featuring a 11.8 inch disc brake at the front and a 9.5 inch disc brake at the rear, the brake system of the new BMW G 650 GS is designed for stable and easily controllable braking. As part of its optional factory-installed equipment, the BMW G 650 GS also offers an ABS system, providing even greater safety in braking maneuvers. For offroad riding, the BMW Motorrad ABS can be deactivated.

Enduro ergonomics.

The single-cylinder models from BMW Motorrad have been characterized by a compact design and easy handling. The rear tank with its low center of gravity is a key contributor to the agile handling properties of the new G 650 GS. The new, particularly narrow, tank shape serves to improve yet again the inner leg length and therefore the ease of dismounting from the G 650 GS. In addition, the narrower seat/frame allows the rider to easily stand when maneuvering offroad.

The new BMW G 650 GS is available with three different seat heights. Besides the standard seat, the low suspension as optional factory-installed equipment and the retrofit high seat make sure that virtually every motorcyclist feels comfortable on the G 650 GS.

A relaxed seating position and optimal control are achieved with a new wide and ergonomically molded handlebar. The clutch lever can be adjusted to each riderÔÇÖs individual reach.

At higher speeds the standard windshield offers increased protection to the riderÔÇÖs upper body from wind and directs oncoming wind over the helmet. A taller windshield is available as a BMW Motorrad optional accessory.

Modern sporty design.

The asymmetrical headlamp, the sporty turn indicators with smoky grey lenses, and the front wheel fender give the new G 650 GS an unmistakable design and immediately distinguishes it as a genuine BMW GS.

Completely new is the compact, flat instrument panel, consisting of an analog speedometer and an LCD display with digital tachometer. This LCD display also presents additional information, such as miles traveled, two trip counters and the time. For turn signals, high beam, idling, fuel reserve, ABS, and engine temperature, the LEDs are arranged to the right of the round instrument. In addition, simple and safe handling is ensured by new, compact, multifunctional switches operated like conventional indicators.

Optional equipment and optional accessories ÔÇô the perfect potential for personalizing the BMW G 650 GS.

Optional equipment is factory installed and is integrated in the production process. Optional accessories are installed by the BMW Motorrad dealer, so the motorcycle can be fitted with options following delivery, as well.

The N??rburg silver of the engine cover for alternator and clutch, the magnesium of the wheels, and the turn signals with the smoky grey lenses offer a contrast to the painted body panels. The dynamic appearance of the G 650 GS is underscored in the detail of the BMW GS inscription on the speedometer dial, the windshield, and the side badge mounts.

The grey/black seat combination is offered as standard equipment.

BMW Motorrad Motorsport - Winter Tests - Summary
ÔÇó 30.11.2010
ÔÇó Press Release
Winter testing ÔÇô Jerez and Portim?úo.
24 th to 30 th November 2010.

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport completed its last winter tests of 2010. In preparation for the 2011 FIM Superbike World Championship, works riders, Troy Corser (AUS) and Leon Haslam (GBR), spent three days of testing at the Spanish race track of Jerez (Wednesday to Friday), followed by two more days at Portim?úo in Portugal (Monday and Tuesday). They were joined by BMW test rider, Steve Martin (AUS), and LeonÔÇÖs father, Ron Haslam, who also completed some laps on the BMW S 1000 RR. Unfortunately both tests at Jerez and Portim?úo were hampered by rain, and the team had only one day of dry running, which was the Thursday at Jerez. During the five days, the team completed a total of 1.540 test kilometers.

1111178346_cRQum-M.jpg

Programme:
Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport used the five days to work on the suspension and the engine of the BMW S 1000 RR, and tested several new chassis parts and adjustments. Troy and Leon both also tried a new ?ûhlins front fork, which was initially developed for MotoGP, new brakes and geometry changes.

The team is quite satisfied with the progress made at these final tests of the year. At Jerez especially on the dry Thursday it was possible to make big improvements to the chassis. Also with the engine some steps were made, but because of the bad weather the progress in this area was not as big as the team had hoped for. The team focused on rideability in the wet.

In Portimao, BMW Motorrad Italia SBK rider James Toseland had his first roll-out with the BMW S 1000 RR. Now work continues back home at the facilities in Munich and Stephanskirchen (GER). The next winter test will take place at the end of January at Eastern Creek and then Phillip Island (AUS).

Troy Corser:
Bike: BMW S 1000 RR
ÔÇ£Unfortunately we had the bad weather, but on the dry day at Jerez we gathered lots of good information. My comments and those of Leon were pretty much in parallel regarding the areas we want to improve, and the areas where we think we are heading in the right direction. We tried many different things on the suspension together with ?ûhlins, which was also very good. Unfortunately the rain followed us from Jerez to Portim?úo, but to get some wet testing is also quite valuable, because during the season it can rain at any track we go to. Riding in the rain also helped us to tackle some of the problems we have in the dry. It is actually easier to get a feeling for the problems and to see them on the telemetry, because everything happens a bit slower, so the actual problem is a lot clearer.

Unfortunately we did not have a lot of dry track time, but I think we got a lot of information for the development of the bike. I celebrated my 39th birthday during the tests, but I have to say I do not feel older than I did when I was 30. I am looking forward to next year, to being successful and possibly becoming the oldest champion. I will now spend a lot of time back home in Australia and will work on my fitness with my trainer Ko. We plan to do an intensive programme, because I really want to do improve my fitness even more.ÔÇØ

Leon Haslam:
Bike: BMW S 1000 RR
ÔÇ£We made good progress. In Portim?úo we did not have any dry time, but on Monday I was quickest in the wet in the morning and quickest on the drying track in the afternoon. On the last day, we were down to the times where we should be. However, we were not even pushing to get a fast run, but we were just looking to improve the bike in a few different areas. It would have been nice if it had been dry, so we could have made even more progress, but I am happy.

In the next weeks I have a lot to do. I will first visit the motorcycle show in Birmingham, and then receive some awards. On 12th December I will go to Sweden - where I and my fianc?®e, Olivia, will get married on the 15th! After Christmas we will go on honeymoon to Borneo, and then we already have the next tests in Australia. I am looking forward to a few weeks off now and to recharge my batteries for the New Year.ÔÇØ

motorsport-magazin.com: The weather stay true to tests
Toesland comments on the problems with testing in wet weather but the key point for his potential success with BMW Italia in 2011 may come from "It is of course still very early and we're not driven much. I could give only 80%, but at least I can learn to deal with the machine and I incorporated with my team."

Down Under Biaggi has been dominating the testing.

The press release and stories raise more questions than they answer. In 2010 Aprilia took the power crown from BMW. It is not clear who will own the 2011 crown for power. Both Aprilia and BMW are working on improvements to their already strong engines. KawasakiÔÇÖs new SBK offering may give them a run for the power producing crown.

In all three cases the big news for development is the entire chassis package. New or modified frames appear to be in the works for all three. Front suspension bits and geometry is being tweaked to deal with handling and breaking issues. At the rear new swing arms are being tested to help with handling and simply having the strength to lay down the power the revised engines have.

Chassis parts and Geometry:
Right now your guess is as good as mine. I doubt the bridge frame has been redesigned at this point. The changes in geometry are more likely coming from changes in the triple clams and the rear end. In very general terms: Making the steering angle less steep traditionally slows down steering response. The offsetting gain is increased stability. It does not make any difference how quickly a bike steers if you crash in the process. The rear swing arm changes can impact front end geometry; however they are more likely intended to deal with laying the power down from the revised engine.

ÔÇ£The new ?ûhlins front fork, which was initially developed for MotoGPÔÇØ is an interesting tease on two levels. What is new about it and MotoGP included in any official BMW press release.

What remains even a bigger mystery is the engine. If the weather had been better more may have been said about the engine and what this new version consists of. This is a multi part question.

What is the new top end all about? The design has a theoretical capacity of 16,000rpm. In the real world 14,000 has been a more practical limit. Will the new design allow milking the last 2000 rpms out of the engine? How will this impact the power and torque curves?

Finally the question of black boxes and how they help connect and control the power of the engine to the chassis and the track for the 2011 bike remains a very open question.

We will have to wait and search for answers. We should have those before the next story plays out for us.

BMW will not race in F1 for 2011
BMW actively protects its copyrights logos and product images in courts around the world. BMW sold its controlling interest in BMW Sauber and exited F1 after the 2009 season after a surprise decision by the brains in Munich. The timing of that decision along with problems with the sale resulted in the BMW name and livery remaining on the car for the 2010 season giving us the BMW-Sauber team with power by Ferrari. The FIA and Sauber finally have their paperwork in order and BMW completes its exit (for now) from F1.

FWIW

It is a beautiful sunny morning in my corner of Fly-Over-Land. I have the luxury of a mid week day off and can wait for the day to heat up a bit and melt the snow that finally dropped here on a cold and windy Tuesday. On several of the BMW PressClub sites I have clicked on the following story can be found.

This is a more detailed report than the Facebook account run yesterday.
press.bmwgroup.com: BMW Group celebrates successful new beginning 50 years ago

The importance of this story should not be lost on us.

Imagine it is 1 December 1960 and you have been a part of BMW at any level since the war. No matter the weather outside you had to awake with the sense of the weight of the world being lifted from you shoulders. During the past year you were aware of a white knight that held out hope of avoiding a hostile take over by Mercedes but you are all to aware there is ‘many a slip between cup and lip’. Herbert Quandt and BMW signed the financial deal to secure the immediate financial future of the company was done.

In the wake of the end of WWII you worked in a motor pool company in the American zone. BMW did not build anything. In fact you were not allowed to build anything rather your company survived by repairing Patton’s occupying force vehicles for the first year. When allowed to begin building things one was bicycles. You took solace in the fact that it brought in money and set the stage for the return to motorcycles. Designs were found and dusted off for a single cylinder 250cc motorrad and when approved by the occupying forces you and your company became part of the post war German industrial recovery.

141695821_EsUrQ-M.jpg

BMW motorcycles were quickly picked up by the German buying public seeking individual motorized transport. In cash strapped economies motorcycles provided a cheap means of transport for the public and a starting point for company recovery. As the early 50s passed, the public wanted cars to move the couples and families that were beginning to grow.

141695848_FuAPv-M.jpg

BMW’s return to auto manufacturing was hindered in several ways. Designs for the 501 were found and put into production. Several things quickly became clear. . The war had put BMW’s design focus in other areas than automobile design. This combined with how the American sector was originally managed put BMW behind the curve of post war auto design. To catch up with what was being built would take time and money. The war had devastated the skilled work force needed to build any vehicles. Several obstacles stood in the way of acquiring that work force. Some of the previous employees were now in other sections of the divided country and could not return to a Munich based company to work. Some were simply dead. Training a new work force would take money and time. A trip by managers to an Italian auto show brought back an interesting option; the Isetta.

127391475_B7msb-M.jpg

The Isetta is a wonder motorized oddity or missing link. Its design originated as a three wheeled alternative to motorcycle and the automobile. It was not a motorcycle with a side car yet it was powered by a two stroke motorcycle engine and drive train in the Italian design. It was not a true car having only three wheels and one door. Management brought back blueprints and a license to build this…Isetta. What were they thinking?

Motorcycle sales were beginning to fall as the economy improved. Yet the market would not support another player in the upscale niche BMW risen to before. Not just yet. The Isetta’s price point put it in the sweet spot between motorcycles and autos at a time when the people wanted more than the former but could not truly afford the latter.

The design and specifications were done. Tooling could be made or purchased to produce it. The production process for this little wonder would provide the on the job training tool needed to develop the work force of BMW’s future. The revenue from the sales would fund future automobile designs.

The Motorrad segment would play a key role in this. The single cylinder 250cc engine and drive train would power the BMW version of the Isetta. This would require a bit of ingenuity. The cylinder and carburetor would have to be turned upside down and the exhaust system redesigned, but this was reworking a proven design not unproven clean sheet of paper design. The costs were manageable.

Isetta sales took off over the coming years. BMW licensed production of its version of the three wheeler to others. The revenue funded new racing and street models for the Motorrad segment of BMW.

116795516_LffBg-M.jpg

The automotive side took advantage of the money and work force to build some truly iconic BMWs.

142827858_wYEXp-M.jpg

Yet by 1959 the company was in desperate financial trouble. CFO types had talked with Mercedes about some sort of financing. Mercedes and BMW had been competitors since their inception. In WWI in toe to toe competition BMW defeated Mercedes as the Luftwaffe’s preferred engine build for the same spec engine. Now BMW came hat in hand to Mercedes to talk about needed money. The talks quickly turned into a potential hostile takeover by Mercedes. This would mean trading the blue and white Roundel for a silver tri-star; blasphemy! The search was on for a white knight with cash and a willingness and desire to keep BMW a viable company.

297540701_uK4Gd-S.jpg

Several options were looked at and in the end the CFO types worked a deal with Herbert Quandt. His money came from pharmaceuticals. Discussions of how it came from them would be left for future discussions among Germans. For now he had money and was willing to invest. The discussions had taken time. Mercedes continued its efforts at a take over. Now on this first day of a new month you felt the weight of the world being lifted as you head to work. Quandt would want return on his investment. There was no doubt in you mind about that. Given that investment you were confident in yourself and fellow BMW workers that you could design build and sell products that would give him that.

A new found spring in your step you head off to work a bit early. This would give you time to stop by the official Munich coffee shop where a Mark will give you a cup of coffee and a few Pfennigs change. It’s a special day. Perhaps you should add a few more Pfennigs to the pot and get a nice piece of strudel to go with the coffee.

Back to the present day:

I will leave you to pick apart the history and implications of this day for BMW. I am off to do some laundry and then some deferred housework. I missed the morning gathering at the Official Coffee Shop. I will have to settle for a stop by the Official Watering Hole after I finish my domestic chores.

Woot of the Day

Bike Candy

http://www.bikeexif.com/harley-davi...Feed:+Bikeexif+(Bike+EXIF)]Link: bikeEXIF.com

New retro and feet forward bikes do not appear to be on BMW Motorrad’s radar despite the arguments made in various post and letters from the Roundel faithful. The response from BMW is understandable from a market standpoint if you see it through AG eyes.
Retro bikes have not done well in the market. Ducati’s truly elegant retro caf?® bikes of the recent past languished on the show room floor. These despite rave reviews form the press and the public. The corporate reincarnation of the Triumph name was built on entirely new designs rather than a redo of the iconic Bonneville. When they did introduce the new Bonneville as its version of the British parallel twin it was quickly followed by variations that brought the line into the modern era. Norton, the latest entry into the retro cadre with its Commando, has yet to prove itself in the showroom let alone the corporate balance sheet. It strikes a resonate cord in many riders psyche but will it open wallets? The result is BMW has left retro to others including its owners adopting the strategy of Classic supplying parts and support to the owners of the real thing.

178184060_tKtVC-S.jpg

When the C model of the R line was dropped it was met with resounding dissent by the C faithful. The faithful made a variety of arguments for keeping it in the lineup; the most effective being giving the vertically challenged a bike in the R lineup. For BMW and dealers sales, or the lack of, marked the C for deletion. When BMW did research to find out why a bike so loved by the people that opened their wallets and purchased one did not do well in the market in general the answer was simple. The C lacked the V-twin engine the market segment requires for viability from a financial perspective for builder and dealer. BMW does not see a place for a V-twin in its model line up that would justify its development for this niche.

Just when it seemed it was all over but the whining the internet filled with pictures of a restored BMW R7 and Roundel riders and others were saying if you build it we will buy it. Visually the much loved C left me scratching my head. On the other hand, the art deco lines of the R7 resonate no matter the angle you look at it. I have noticed this reaction has been shared by riders across the two wheeled genres. The result is the call to BMW ‘If you build it we will buy it.’

1111177603_rExTr-O.jpg

In its day the R7 was very well received by the riders of the day. The design works visually and with the elements of the period. While the design and look really work for the prospective rider it had two serious problems embodied in it for BMW. First the frame is a press steel affair. In its day this presented a more complicated to build and thus more costly frame than the traditional tube frame. The second problem was weight, but not in the normal way we think of weight being a problem with motorcycles. Take your mind off the bike and back to the manufacturer’s balance sheet. The weight of that frame was made up of steel and in motorcycle terms a great deal of it. All that steel cost more Reich Marks without supporting an off setting increase in price in the market place of the dealer showroom.

The R7 leaves me of two minds (confusing but progress for me). I fully understand the risk adverse nature of corporate types for retro bikes. For all the rider outpouring of calls for them we have a lousy track record of buying them when manufactures build them.

If you are going to have a retro BMW why not just buy an airhead? You will have to work on it just like a new one. Parts will break just like a new one. Yet at any time, even for the best of the current market available airhead, you will have to open far less than you would for a ‘new R7’. This line of thought does little to move the CFO types to open their corporate wallet to build a new retro R7.

In another part of my mind I have a linger belief in a new R7’s potential. The original is elegant and provides a great starting point for a totally new take on the elegant art deco design. If properly done a new take on this model could bring the design cues into the modern era. Modern construction methods could overcome the obstacle of complexity BMW’s corporate predecessor builders could not. What I lack is the skills to get that idea down on paper and send it off to BMW. I may be a bit closer today.

Every day I search for Bike Candy. I have several standby sites that supply offerings when I don’t come across sweets elsewhere in my ‘wonderings’ around the motorcycle internet world. This morning I clicked on the RSS feed for bikEXIF.com and yawned. In part because I had not yet had my morning coffee; I have the day off and am in slow motion. In part I was bored by the first I image I saw. Yawn…another cruiser custom, must be the beginning of custom builder show season…BORING!

1111177703_SJrzS-S.jpg

Then I scrolled down and instantly thought of the R7.

1111177672_q35L8-M.jpg

I will leave it to you to follow the link to bikeEXIF.com and more images and their comments of this motorcycle. Yes I know it is a V-twin in a ‘modern’ cruiser style. Yet for me I see elements of the art deco design of the R7 and can begin to imagine very modern R7C blending elements from these two bikes and powered by Hex-Head.

I will quickly admit to BMW CFO types I have no money and if you build it I can’t buy it even if I really really really like it. For the rest of you guys at BMW don’t give up on this market niche yet. You are clever enough to build on that elegant R7 incorporating modern design elements to come up with a niche market win–win winner motorrad.

roadracerx.com: Between the races – David Piole
Photographers claiming their work is something different aren’t exactly rare, but when it comes to the shutterbug team of David Piol?® and Alexandre Chailan, the claims are more fact than boast. Over the past couple of years, the French duo has made waves in the MotoGP and World Superbike paddocks by introducing lighting techniques and equipment that—while common in the world of fashion—is still relatively rare in the world of motorsports. We sat down with Piol?® in the pressroom at the season-ending MotoGP round in Valencia, Spain, to find out more.

Progress

8_large.jpg

But in which direction?
Beginning in 2011 we will be watching cars with moveable wings and KERS parading around tracks for two years. I honestly expect some exciting races to happen and plenty of video with breath taking passes and retakes. Yet after watching this I can not help but wonder about the up coming Formula change in 2013. We will be given turbo-4s and KERS. What if they ditched the aero jobs and stuck them in cars like Jimmy was driving?

I bet it would fun and a heck of a lot more relevant and green.

I have them on my bike. They are worth every penny, as they transform the bike in all ways. It lowers a low COG, it removes 16 lbs of unsprung weight, it changes the way the bike goes, stops, and leans all in the best way.
