Bench Racing & The Morning Reads

My thoughts for this thread remain a work in progress. Things keep piling up in my inbox and feed monitor. Time to clear some of them out by sharing.

Benchmarks are the heart of any good Bench Racing discussion of any topic. Simply put they are a point of reference against which things may be compared or assessed. In March, BMW provided a benchmark that neatly links us to where we left off in November and go forward.

BMW Group Annual Report 2015

BMW Group set to remain on course in 2016

BMW Group driving the transformation of individual mobility with its Strategy NUMBER ONE > Next

Like most of you, I have not spent much time reading or pondering the 2015 annual report or the related speeches and press releases. For now we have a mark on the bench to measure what BMW gave us to talk about this month.

March 5th BMW AG released its Q1 Report and statements.

BMW Group Quarterly Report to 31 March 2016

BMW Group makes positive start to the year

Statement by Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Conference Call Quarterly Report to 31 March 2016

Statement by Dr. Friedrich Eichiner, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Finance, Conference Call Quarterly Report to 31 March 2016

The creative nonfiction writers at BMW A.G. cast the start as positive; however, the Wall Street Journal was not as enamored as the Munich scribes. ExGMan started a thread titled Wall Street Journal Not Good Numbers for BMW Motorcycles Mentioned which kicked of a good discussion and provided inspiration to increase my post count in this thread.

In the Q1 Report, when talking about BMW Motorrad Segment, the scribes reference the new strategy and suggests that it is a partial explanation of the Segment’s underperformance.. The strategy refers to the expansion of the BMW product line into the sub 500cc market with the G310R as the first model in this category. This is a big deal for BMW Motorrad but many are skeptical about the plan, its expenses and BMW’s ability to pull it off.

The day after the WSJ article BMW PressClub put out a press release the sheds much more light on what is being done and hints at why the expenses are high at this time. I’ll take a look at that release in an upcoming post.

For now, let’s look at some other things in the PressClub that caught my eye.

FWIW: Cage manufactures are morphing.

Once they defined themselves purely as manufactures of cages. Their worth and success was measured in units produced and delivered. Unit sales and ownership business models based on units morphed as leasing was thrown into the mix involving manufactures in managing more of the life stream of the units they produced to make a profit. Yet, this business model was based in the unit production model. Cage companies continued to see themselves as manufacturers. Changes in technology and models for ownership have been leading them to rethink how they see themselves.

The move from ICE cages to new propulsion models has increased leasing as a way to overcome early adoption fears, increase sales and create a market for their new cages. Further technology developments, along with changes in how consumers view their vehicle needs has pushed manufacturing companies to reassess their business models. The result is a growing shift from pure manufacturing models to seeing their companies as “transportation companies”. Manufacturing remains a major component of the business model but it is part of a model that focuses on the delivery of transportation modes rather than unit volumes.

What this means for the two wheeled world remains to be seen. It would be easy to be a harbinger of doom when thinking about this shift. Still, there are a number of scenarios in which this could bring new life into a two wheeled world willing to morph in ways to take advantage of opportunities created by the cage paradigm shift.

Why don’t bike shops stock extreme sizes?
Are you an extreme size – short, tall, skinny or large – but still want to ride a motorcycle? Unfortunately, you are out of luck as few stores stock these extreme sizes. A former motorcycle gear distributor says it’s purely a commercial decision. I started doing The Morning Reads, the predecessor to this thread, a decade ago. The forum was much smaller in membership and number of sub-forums. The thread is in the Campfire sub-forum because this is the sub-forum that has always been open to members and visitors alike. I wanted to give members something to read and talk about, and in that process maybe attract some new people to the association.

There have been three issues of The Tuesday Reader weekly format. The first two received about 3400 views each. I will leave it to you and others to decide what that means in penetration of membership and attracting new participants.

My intent is to continue with and refine this format for the remainder of the year. Racing coverage was the killer in the past. I hope to do more. I am not certain what that means. I love F1(the 2009 F1 thread is the 9th most viewed thread in Campfire), WSBK and grew to like MotoGP again. I would be happy to have others share the thread with me and take over race coverage in 2017.

I had the wonderful opportunity to have a column in ON and its related credit on the masthead. I left because of a failing family business and the fact I never synced up with the schedule for columns. I have written numerous pieces for the newsletter but have never seen the newsletter despite registering for it. My email has been the same for just over twenty years. Nigerian princess and their friends have been able to communicate with me but the BMW MOA Newsletter has never found its way to Fly-Over-Land.

I would be honored to have a link on the homepage. I did have one very briefly. As the result of comments from Vince Winkle, the thread took on its current form as a continuous thread with multiple posts rather than individual threads with a common title. Vince piped the thread through to the home page for a period of time. I realized the value of the exposure due to increased views. I was also pleased that some of my family finally saw where the work I was bangging away at was being seen. I was told a change in the home page broke that link to it and it has never been restored.

I am dubious about that happening and how it would work on a practical level. I have serious reservations on political and editorial levels.

I am a BMW MOA member. My member number is 36,9XX. After a couple of years lurking, I joined the forum in August of 2004. The forum is the reason I am still a member. I do this for the forum and am happy here. Tell your fellow members and friends to park their browsers here, read this thread and join in the fun.

Pass the Mustard and Up the Revolution!

Your avatar has never been more meaningful to me than in that post.

I think what you've provided, and perhaps what it could be with more support and/or help is a great asset to the club.

Perhaps it's not for everyone, but could draw many eyes to the MOA. While I was a bit flippant in my previous comment and meant it lovingly in jest for what you've done, the sentiment is real.

While I've tried to provide a bit of a outlet for myself as well as material for others in my blog, I've learned how thinly spread I've become and how weak the material can be when that's the case.

Thanks!

Bench Racing: BMW AG - Corporate Endurance Racing

BMW Group continues to achieve steady increase in sales
Best May ever: 198,354 automobiles sold worldwide, up 5.3% +++ Year-to-date sales up 5.0% with 935,288 vehicles delivered +++ BMW sales up 5.0% in year-to-date: 797,457 vehicles sold +++ MINI delivers 136,617 cars in first five months, up 5.2% +++ Mainland China grows 7.1% in May: 40,123 vehicles sold +++Strong Plug-in Hybrid sales in Europe

When I bench race BMW AG, or any other transportation company, I think in endurance racing metaphor terms. Monthly sales reports are telemetry from the sector speed traps. Quarterly reports are data dumps at the end of a three sector lap. Annual reports are the massive data dumps from the pit stop which took place between the close of business the last day of one year and the start of business the next. This compiles all the speed trap and four sector reports into one big data dump for strategists to use. The timing delay for receiving the data varies with where you are sitting at the track.

Timing is virtually real time If you are part of the team on in the pits or on the track. There is a slight delay in the data report for team strategists. This slight delay allows the strategists to set themselves in place for the new lap they are already on and when received, use the data to fine tune the plan for the new lap.

Timing for the various industry feeds and news organizations is delayed a bit more. They are secondary consumers of the various team feeds competing in the endurance series. This is challenging in several ways. Some teams, field multiple teams competing in several categories. BMW fields both Motorrad and Cage teams which in turn have competitors in various classes of cage racing. Throw teams like Polaris which competes in a growing number of areas, UJM teams such as Honda that match BMW, Polaris, others and then throws a jet aircraft competitor into the transportation mix and your head spins.

The delay for bench racers depends on your information stream access point. On the BMW MOA forum in general the timing is dependent on what access streams forum members use and when they bring it to their fellow members in the form of a post. This thread supplies a variety of data as I receive and post. BMW’s PressClub is the primary source of benchmark data augmented by all the other feeds I watch. As a result the multiple sector speed trap reports and the Q1 first lap data dump of a new year normally precede receiving the previous year’s annual report lap information. That is a big delay; however, don’t worry. Bench racing BMW AG has gone on for 100 years. The Motorrad Segment Team has been on the track, or in the pits, for 93 years. Here in the BR&TMR thread we follow the Mothership’s AG, Bimmer and Beemer teams but focus on the BMW Motorrad Segment/Beemer team. MINI and Rolls Royce Motor Cars are part of the telemetry data provided in quarterly, annual and many of the PressClub reports. They show up in this thread periodically for color.

It is understandable then if you choose to go to the concession stand or even went out for a ride or two while waiting for the latest information. After all, this is endurance bench racing. Let’s take a moment to recap.

WHERE ARE WE NOW?

This post opens with the May sales report. The April sales report is in a previous post. These are sector speed trap data for the second quarter of 2016. Sector three, June data, will come out early July and the Q2 report will follow shortly after that. The 2016 Q1 report came out after the of the 2015 annual report.

2015 was a strong year for BMW. The company posted its fifth record sales year in a row and returned record earnings on those sales. The BMW Motorrad Segment did its part to make that happen.

On first blush 2016 started on a positive note. Sales were continuing to be up over the begining of 2015. BMW AG made its case the it is on course once again in 2016. The Q1 report showed positive sales figures. In a separate release the Motorrad Segment touted a 7.7 percent increase in sales over 2015 thus marking the best ever start to a year long lap. At least that is what BMW wanted bench racers to believe.

Once bench racers had a chance to dig into the reports and look past the sales speed trap data they weren’t as sanguine about BMW’s track position. Head over to the thread in the Motorrad sub-forum and you will understand. The Wall Street Journal was hard on BMW overall and pointed out issues in the Motorrad Segment.

Motorcycles segment revenues grow
First-quarter revenue in the Motorcycles segment grew
by 2.6 % to € 582 million (2015: € 567 million). Earnings,
however, were down on the previous year, due to
starting a number of projects in connection with the implementation
of the newly adopted strategy. Both EBIT
and profit before tax fell to € 94 million (EBIT 2015:
€ 115 million; – 18.3 %; pre-tax profit 2015: € 114 million;
– 17.5 %).

Workforce larger than in previous year
The BMW Group employed 3,124 people in the Motorcycles
segment at 31 March 2016 (2015: 2,981 employees;
+ 4.8 %).

Sales figures raised questions at that time and continue to do so. Overall the Motorrad Segment was touting a 7.7 percent increase in Q1 sales. In the US sales were up 29.6 percent for the month of March but only 2.5 percent year-to-date.

By the May report Motorrad sales for May were only up 1.5 percent over 2015 and the lead on 2015 y-t-d numbers was down to 4.5 percent at the Mothership level. In theUS May was down a -40.0 percent for the month and -17.5 percent y-t-d.

If I manage my caffeine intake, I can calmly bench race the day away taking all sorts of up and down data in stride. However, when the data includes a -40.0 and -17.5 in the numbers for the Mothership’s second largest market...well...err...OUCH!!!

The Mothership team principals are continuing with theStrategy NUMBER ONE plan that saw BMW through the post 2008 crash recovery and lays out the race plan out to 2020. Over at the BMW Cage team Ian Robertson has been talking about sales strategies, focusing on profits at the same time while warning of issues with the rapidly changing world of cage technology.

All of this is well and good, but...

What if you are the tactician for the Motorrad Team
AND
Sales and profits are under pressure in 2016?

Please forgive me. It may be the caffeine. I am on my second pot while banging this out.

Stay

CALM

Your track position in 2016 is going to suck.

Believe in Strategy NUMBER ONE

Work on the newly adopted Motorrad Segment Strategy

This is an Endurance Race Championship not a 12 lap sprint race.

MOTORRAD ON.

Some readers may be rightly wondering what is Strategy NUMBER ONE is and means. The Cliff Notes version is that it is the result of a six year review and reorganization of BMW begun in 2001 and announced in August of 2008. It lays out the plan to take BMW AG and its component segments to 2020. Do not feel bad if you aren’t familiar with it; I don’t think many around here are.

Strategy NUMBER ONE is important but beyond the scope of this post. I’ll come back to it and break down my understanding of it, in Motorrad terms, in a future post. For 2016 BMW Motorrad bench racing the key component is the new Motorrad Segment strategy[/u]; a.k.a. The Sub 500cc Strategy.

The Sub 500cc Strategy: G310R, CKD assembly, where the heck is Manaus anyway and why should I care?

BMW announced its plan to expand into India by partnering with TVS Motors in 2013. The Wall Street Journal seemed open to the idea and did a decent job of laying out the implications in its article. This would be the latest wrinkle to BMW’s efforts to realign their motorcycle lineup.

Unlike the Husqvarna, which recently had been sold Pierer Industries AG of KTM fame, the TVS deal would brand the coming jointly developed motorcycle would be sold as a TVS within India and a BMW elsewhere. Husqvarna had been, BMW’s second effort including a sub 500cc component was kept as a stand alone brand.

<iframe src="https://m1ka.smugmug.com/frame/slideshow?key=QrbLfF&autoStart=1&captions=0&navigation=0&playButton=0&speed=3&transition=fade&transitionSpeed=2" width="800" height="600" frameborder="no" scrolling="no"></iframe>

The purchase of Husqvarna had always seemed troubled. Purchased from a bankruptcy workout involving Malaysian car manufacturer Patron in 2007. This was part of a deal allowing Claudio Castiglioni, who had repurchased Husky, Cagiva and MV Agusta for 1 euro, to attempt to revive the remaining Italian brands. That plan stalled and Castiglioni worked a sale to Harley-Davidson the following year. BMW had troubles untangling what it purchased from Cagiv/MV Agusta resulting in a great deal of unrest. Once it took full control there seemed to be some gap between what we were told they had purchased and had planned for the famous brand.

Shortly after the purchase BMW rolled its first sub 500cc of the post 2001 period into the Husqvarna line. The G450 had come as a surprise for many. Development began on the QT. Rumors of a new G bike when it started to appear as an unbranded racer at Australian events.

<iframe src="https://m1ka.smugmug.com/frame/slideshow?key=7vRN34&autoStart=1&captions=0&navigation=0&playButton=0&speed=3&transition=fade&transitionSpeed=2" width="800" height="600" frameborder="no" scrolling="no"></iframe>

The model always made a great deal of sense to me. It made sense for BMW to have models at the upper end of the sub 500cc market. Dakar type racing was moving to a 450cc standard. Going deeper into the smaller cc range would put them in competition by not only the UJM big four but a host of manufacturers from other countries.

The competition drawback above is somewhat muted by the TVS alliance. The new drawback confronting the alliance as its development work finally comes to market is the fact this is the third effort to tap the sub 500cc range. BMW and its fans hope the third is time the charm. For investors and analysts there is caution. They weren’t able to make it work the first two times, why is this going to yield a different result?

Beyond the initial announcement the new alliance remained fairly quiet about what they had planned. Forum speculation centered around an expansion of the scooter line from the 650cc range to include a series of sub 500cc scoots. The alternative was to develop a motorcycle that would be a logical step up from the TVS 175cc Apache.

<iframe src="https://m1ka.smugmug.com/frame/slideshow?key=CnmJCL&autoStart=1&captions=0&navigation=0&playButton=0&speed=3&transition=fade&transitionSpeed=2" width="800" height="600" frameborder="no" scrolling="no"></iframe>

The G310R is the first outcome of the alliance. Unveiled at the Milan show last year the motorcycle has received good reviews to date by the people able to ride pre production examples. Production issues are where we are at now and the cause of the hit on BMW Motorrad’s earnings.

Built in India and branded an TVS within the subcontinent it will be sold as a BMW elsewhere and involve a CKD production process in many cases. In BMW’s words, in the CKD process, certain parts and components are packaged as kits in precisely defined assembly steps and exported for assembly in Thailand. These kits are then supplemented with locally manufactured parts in the partner countries. Assembly takes place on location with adherence to the BMW Group's global quality standards. BMW has used this model for both Cage and Motorrad assembly.

In 2003 BMW Motorrad made a serious effort to expand into South America and Brazil in particular. By 2009, and in conjunction with AG’s efforts to redirect some of its assets as part of Strategy NUMBER ONE, a deal for CKD production with the Brazilian motorcycle manufacturer Dafra Motors was announced. Markets loved the idea.

i-tPj8FcR-L.jpg

The world motorcycle market was reeling. American icon Harley-Davidson was feeling the pinch and going through the ugly process of closing plants and cutting production. In this trouble manufacturing environment BMW was expanding into one of the very desirable BRIC countries and facilitating movement of resources to another. The expense would be limited.

Unlike H-D, which built plants, hired employees and now was having problems backing away from as markets collapsed, the plant assembly space would be part of Dafra’s existing plant. The employees would be on the Dafra payroll but would go through about six months of training at the BMW Berlin plant. A production deal combining essentially a rental deal, with BMW trained employees whose benefits and all those pesky HR issues were taken care of Dafra rolled up in contract terms.

Since 2009 the Brazilian model lineup has expanded. Starting with the G650GS parts of the F800 line up were added first then K and S models were added. The Brazilian market was humming along nicely as far as most were concerned. If we thought about it at all most probably assumed the Dafra relationship would be expanded to include the G310R. Wrong.

BMW Motorrad expands production network with its own manufacturing site in Brazil. Manaus as a new location in the BMW Motorrad manufacturing network – production to begin in 2016. Assembly of the BMW G 310 R Roadster for the Brazilian growth market.
04.05.2016Press Release

The BMW Group will open its own motorcycle production site at the end of 2016 in Manaus, Brazil. The new BMW Group Plant Manaus will create around 170 jobs. The BMW Group is already planning to produce more than 10,000 BMW motorcycles in 2017 for the Brazilian market and is expecting significant volume growth in the market by assembling the new BMW G 310 R locally

The press release explains almost all of the concerns with the declines and concerns with BMW Motorrad Segment’s performance in the Q1 report. The capital investment in building plant while expanding the model line and the related costs of filling the production to market pipeline before anything is sold were explained. The claim of 170 new jobs created in the BMW Manaus facility and related slots explains almost to the employe the change in staffing reported in the Q1 document. What the release does not do is answer a series of questions starting with “Why”.

Why? In 2009 Brazil was seen as a relatively stable market with a stable government and growth potential. It was one of the BRIC crown jewels. Now Brazil suffers from rampant inflation, a government in the throws of impeachment and rumors of potential military take overs. The impression is one of more ick than BRIC jewels.

Why end the relationship with Dafra? What changed to make it worthwhile to take on the capital and HR expense of going on alone?

The release and revealed plan explain current expenses. There is speculation that I can not verify as this is posted the Manaus plan is not the end of the story. BMW Group manufactures automobiles from parts kits in assembly plants for example at BMW Manufacturing, Rayong, Thailand. This plant may be the first to assemble both cages and motorcycles at the same plant. These would be assembled for the Asian Pacific BMW markets. The Chennai BMW plant could be next with an expansion to start assembling CKD kit versions of the over 500cc part of the BMW motorcycle line. Indian tariffs make this the most sensible move of these three.

Why now? BMW Motorrad has rolled out a series of new or revamped models over the past several years. Sales have been strong. The G310R may be well received but it was announced late last year and it will be late this year before it is in showrooms and we find out if shoppers turn into riders and the resulting revenues begin to offset growing expenses.

The why questions lead to “what does this mean” questions.

What does this mean for Investors?

That question is met with a question in response. Are you an investor or are you a trader?

The new strategy builds on some of the facets that made the old plan desireable. If you can see that and have the stomach for an investment horizon out far enough in the future to see the ROI you will invest.

BMW has been rated an average of hold by some ratings groups. Averages like this are a combination of ratings recommending BMW AG as a buy, hold or sell. This seems to put the stock in play no matter your choice. Buy if you see better price value ratios develop. Sell if you need or want to move your portfolio in different directions. Holder/investors may buy to increase their potential future return.

My only investment advice is this. If you come to BR&TMR for investment advice - a fool and their money are soon parted.

What does this mean for Motorrad enthusiasts?

More toys! This is the simple answer.

The G310R is the beginning. It is a reach up for TVS and a reach down for BMW. It seems unlikely the alliance will yield only one motorcycle. I anticipate variants of this effort and more models. TVS has teased us with one I am hoping for.

In 2015 and 2016, after signing with BMW, TVS went to Dakar with the help of SHERCO.

i-SCKdCdJ.png

Quiet in the peanut gallery...NO, the bike does not have zits. Click on this link to the TVS site to read more about the RTR450 when you click on the red dots there.

I don’t think the G310R is the final effort in this strategy. Please oh Please a 450SM.

What does this mean for the BMW MOA?

The short, honest answer to the question, is I don’t know. I have some ideas but I don’t know. I will let you dear readers mull over that question for a while. Before I give my thoughts I want to look at BMW’s twenty year plan - Strategy NUMBER ONE and the various Motorrad Segment strategies which have been developed and rolled out as a result.

TVS tie-up

I have no clue what the TVS may yield. Business ventures with Indian companies don't have a great track record due to the rather ambiguous enforcement of contract law and dependence on bribes.

However, I can say that the gentleman from the Italian design agency and the LAPD seem to know how to buy clothes that fit. The guys from BMW design look like Junior High students wearing their little brother's suits.

Are you channeling my mother?

That is an updated rip off of a line my mother made about Johnny Carson’s suits. If she were alive you two could have a standup routine in no time.

:brad

Based on my past experience your observation about doing business in a foreign country, such as India, applies just about anywhere. BMW has been running a plant in Chennai for over a decade and doing business there longer. I suspect they have had their pockets picked and nose bloodied from time to time. I also would guess they have given as good as they have gotten while doing business in all of the BRIC countries and others.

Mom is that you?

:heart

If it is love you, miss you. Good night!
