Bike Candy

The BMW cafe racer in yesterday's Bike Candy has appeared before and always causes a stir. The photos of it have always been unattributed and as a result the bike has become something of a small white whale for my internet searches. I don't obsess about this bike as Captain Ahab did about his white whale but I keep an eye open.

The bike appears to be from Germany. A recent siting on Flicker had me on the hunt once again and led me to Bremen Germany and the Classic motor Show: 2010. The event is described as one of the premier events of the show season in Germany. The bike was an entrant and showed up in the photo dumps of several people that attended. Unfortunately no information beyond the fact it was in the show. To date I have not found a list of entrants for that show. It may not be a dead end but no specific information yet.

Good thing I read your remark about no details! There is a lot going on with that bike, starting with the heads! WOW!!!

Lacking any specific bike information lets deconstruct the bike a bit starting with the heads. The heads are an attention getter made by German BMW specialist Micheal Krauser and Krauser GmBH in the early 80's.

At the history pages on the Domani site, a three wheeled BMW vehicle latter developed by Krauser, traces the company roots back to 1924 with engine repair, crankshaft grinding and piston manufacturing. In the 1970's it took over a BMW auto dealership then branched out into the motorcycle business in 1972. In that year Krauser came out with detachable panniers for BMW motorcycles. Out of the success with the panniers the company in 1980 advanced to building a limited run of 300 motorcycles and in the process introduced their 4 valve heads.

koffer_gr.jpg

1983 - The Krauser motorcycle-case-system made the name "Krauser" well known in the entire world of motorcycling. The sports section is accentuated with the MKM 1000 and the 4-valve-cylinder-head
I first became aware of the heads shortly after purchasing my R100. While they completely captivated me I quickly realized in my motorcycle universe they where machined out of pure unobtainium. Fortunately not everyone lives in my universe and some people actual own bikes with these heads and have discussed them on our forum and over at Advrider

Taking the advice to 'put your shoulder into it' to a new level

untitled-L.jpg

Friday, 23 September : Qualifying / Practice Updates

World SBK

Friday at Imola portends an exciting race weekend for WorldSBK fans.

Checa topped the field on his 'privateer' Ducati during the first Imola practice session. Rea and his Castrol Honda pipped Checa to take the provisional pole for Sundays race. Hot on their heels is Haslam in P3!

A P3 in in the first qualifying session will allow Haslam and the team to play with race setup and other things in Saturday's second qualifying session while saving qualifying tires for the demands of Superpole. The other BMW riders do not have this luxury. Badovini follows Haslam on the charts but in P14 not P4. Troy Corser is in P19 and new addition Fores brings up the rear in P22.

Friday sets up a great race weekend for fans and a good deal of work for the BMW teams.

Team talk between race weekends has been about mistakes and the need to focus effort on preparing for 2012 but the Singapore Grand Prix is here and so are the contenders.

A support series race damaged the track and resulted in a shortened first F1 practice session. Fast out of the box Hamilton lead the field. Vettel topped the second session charts but Alonso was not far off. The importance of aerodynamics is driven home in this session by Hamilton. Minor damage to the underside of his McLaren resulted in his times dropping. Should be a quick overnight fix.

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport had a very good start to the eleventh round of the 2011 FIM Superbike World Championship at Imola (ITA). The team provisionally qualified for the front row. Factory rider, Leon Haslam (GBR) finished the first Qualifying practice on his BMW S 1000 RR in third position. His team mate Troy Corser (AUS) provisionally qualified 19th. Ayrton Badovini (ITA) and Xavier Fores (ESP) of the BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team finished in 14th and 22nd respectively.

Leon Haslam:

ÔÇ£I am really happy with the lap times. We did not use the soft tyre in qualifying and basically worked on race simulation. Our consistency is probably one of the best out there. I would say that this was one of the best starts we have had to a race weekend, so we are going to keep on pushing for tomorrow. Then it will all be about qualifying and choosing the right race tyre for Sunday. Today we have got some really good information and we will go on pushing in the same direction.ÔÇØ

Troy Corser:
Fastest lap Free Practice: 1:50.713 min (P15)/Fastest lap Qualifying Practice 1: 1:50.011 min (P19)
ÔÇ£In the Qualifying session in the afternoon we used a different chassis setting than in the morning practice. It took us some time to set it up. We are a little bit behind, but Leon is right there. So we can compare and see what is different with the bike. So I am confident for tomorrow. I hope it will be dry in the morning, and then we are going to move up in the classification.ÔÇØ

Rainer B?ñumel (Head of Race Operations):
ÔÇ£Leon did a great job. He was riding on used race tyres for the whole qualifying session ÔÇô and those were not the faster softer ones. That makes me confident that we are going to have a successful weekend. With Troy, we still have to fine tune the set-up of his RR a little bit. To do so we will analyse the data tonight and I am convinced that we can improve tomorrow.ÔÇØ

Troy Corser official website

A loss of a lot of track time in this morningÔÇÖs untimed practice cost Troy dearly and caused him to finish the day in lowly nineteenth position. But with the problem now resolved, Troy hopes he can catch up the pace tomorrow and still take a good grid position. Jonathan Rea (Honda) finished first qualifying with the fastest lap, with series leader Carlos Checa (Ducati) second. Third quickest today was Leon Haslam (BMW), with Michel less than a tenth of a second behind. Behind Michel today is Marco Melandri (Yamaha) and Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) - making it six different manufacturers filling the top six positions. Troy - 19th, 1:50.011 I seem to be out of luck at the moment. When we fired up my two bikes this morning just before the first practice, smoke started coming out! It seems that we had some contaminated fuel and we had to get that sorted that out before I could get on the track. This took some time and I missed a lot of the session as a result. I missed all of the session on a bike that I wanted to try out - as it had some different settings - so we were well behind our workload by the time the afternoon session began. I did manage to improve in the afternoon qualifying, but I still didnÔÇÖt get enough time on one of the bikes. When I did get on it, I went a second quicker straightaway and I wanted to keep working on this one. The only problem with it is that we need to work on the engine braking, but once weÔÇÖve done that it is going to be even easier to ride. At the moment, I feel as I am skidding into the corners a bit and having a bit of a problem stopping. As there a lot of fast entrances here, itÔÇÖs important to get the engine braking right. The technicians can see whatÔÇÖs happening on the telemetry and theyÔÇÖll figure out what we should do tomorrow. The track has been resurfaced since last time and a lot of the bumps have gone, so itÔÇÖs a big improvement for sure. It still feels a bit ÔÇÿgreenÔÇÖ but as more and more rubber goes down, the grip level is going to increase further. See ya, Troy

BMW MOTORRAD ITALIA SUPERBIKE TEAM - IMOLA - PRACTICE 1
23.09.2011

Difficult day for Ayrton Badovini hindered by technical problems in qualifying. Superbike debut for* Xavi Fores. Good result in the Superstock with* Barrier*in third and fifth for Zanetti.

Today was the first day of testing at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, Italy for the* BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team . The young Spaniard, Xavi Fores made his debut alongside Ayrton Badovini.Ayrton set the eighth fastest time in morning practice, then suffered technical problems in the afternoon qualifying session that prevented him doing better than fourteenth.Technicians have now found the cause of the problem and Ayrton is ready to improve his grid position in tomorrowÔÇÖs qualifying.

Xavi, meanwhile, has been familiarising himself with the Superbike machine that he rode for the first time at the track today.

The Superstock team were content that Sylvain Barrier set the third fastest time, just a few tenths off the provisional pole man Danilo Petrucci. Lorenzo Zanetti, who currently occupies second place in the FIM Superstock Cup, is sitting in fifth.
Serafino Foti, sporting director of BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team at the end of the practice said: "This afternoon we had some technical problems and Ayrton was unable to get the good feel for the bike that he had this morning. I am convinced that tomorrow we will return to the top ten and we will try to prepare for the best possible race on Sunday.Xavi has really struggled but it is understandable as it is the first time he has been on the Superbike. We'll see tomorrow. We are quite pleased with the outcome of the Superstock. We are much closer than on other tracks. We are confident for tomorrow and especially for Sunday's race."

FWIW: Lorenzo has to be one of the most haunted reigning champions in a long time. He is still haunted by his former teammate Rossi who seemed, when focused, to be able to be Lorenzo at will. This year in his championship defense he has spent much of the season as a footnote to the Honda steamroller lead by Stoner.

The takeaway from this is the changes to Corser's bike did improve his times and he advances to Superpole along with Badovini. Haslam apparently took a different direction with setup and effort in this session. He lost ground on these charts but when the riders returned to the grid for pre-Superpole free practice he was back in P3 for that session.

Superpole ÔÇô Imola

Superpole 1.

Laverty, Haga, Checa and Guitoli took the front row in this session. Badovini improved to P10 followed by Haslam in P11. Both advance to the next round. Corser did not find the speed necessary to advance coming in with a P15. On the bright side for him his times continued to improve through the session but not enough.

Superpole 2

Badovini put in two hot laps early in the session and pitted not to return to the track. This was a calculated move or Italian bravado. He pitted in P4 and advances in P8 the last slot to do so.

Haslam seemed to struggle. Like Badovini he was out early, put in two hot laps then headed to the pits in P12. He would not return until late in the session. The changes made worked and he poped up in the standings to P4 on his session fifth hot lap.

Now all the brinksmanship comes to an end. Riders and teams have ten minutes to get on row 1 and a clear shot for turn one in each of Sunday's races.

Superpole 3

Checa takes Superpole after putting in three hot laps. Haslam and Badovini worked much harder, put in more laps but could not find the speed necessary. They will start Sunday's races on the inside of the second row.

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport has a promising platform for the 11th round of the 2011 FIM Superbike World Championship. The team will start tomorrowÔÇÖs races at Imola (ITA) from the second row. Factory rider, Leon Haslam (GBR), finished todayÔÇÖs Superpole qualifying in sixth. His team mate Troy Corser (AUS) encountered some grip issues and qualified 15th. Ayrton Badovini (ITA) from the BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team finished in seventh and will also start from the second row on his BMW S 1000 RR. His team mate Xavi Fores (ESP) qualified 22nd.

ÔÇ£I have been feeling confident all weekend and we managed to get the bike working well yesterday. That gave me a lot of confidence coming into Superpole but today we had a few issues with the bike which made things difficult. We still managed to qualify on the second row of the grid however, which is a good position to be in going into tomorrowÔÇÖs races. On the whole I am feeling pretty happy and looking forward to tomorrow.ÔÇØ

Troy Corser:
Fastest lap Qualifying Practices: 1:48.879 min (P13) / Fastest lap FP: 1:49.033 min (P13) / Fastest lap Superpole 1: 1:48.894 min (P15)
ÔÇ£We have been improving with every session this weekend and we have found a pretty good set-up on race tyres. Sadly when we changed to qualifying tyres we were not able to take advantage of the extra grip. I actually set my fastest lap on race tyres but that wasnÔÇÖt good enough to progress further in Superpole today. Still, we are happy with the race set-up. We just need a good start tomorrow in both races and then letÔÇÖs see what happens from there.ÔÇØ

Rainer B?ñumel (Head of Race Operations):
ÔÇ£On LeonÔÇÖs side, we encountered unexpected issues this morning. This might have been due to todayÔÇÖs higher temperatures but we were able to sort this out for the Superpole. In the deciding third part, Leon was out on the slower race tyre, as we had no qualifying tyres left. He was very consistent and quick, which makes me optimistic for tomorrow. With TroyÔÇÖs RR we found a good set-up for the Superpole. Unfortunately the qualifying tyre did not work. We could not get enough grip out of it. However we have confidence in him for the race as we have a good race set-up for his bike.ÔÇØ

Troy Corser.com

Despite ending up on the fourth row of the grid for tomorrowÔÇÖs two 212-lap races, Troy is in a positive mood. As long as he can get two good starts, he believes he will overcome FridayÔÇÖs problems and come away with some good results. FridayÔÇÖs loss of track time hindered TroyÔÇÖs progress today, but on race rubber he feels generally satisfied with the bike. On qualifying tyres, the story is different and once again Troy and the team could not get the bike to perform as well as it had done on regular rubber. Carlos Checa (Ducati) took pole position - his sixth of the season - though this time it was by the narrowest of margins. Less than seven hundredths of a second separated him and Jonathan Rea (Honda) in second place. Third is Noriyuki Haga (Aprilia), with Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) completing the front row line-up. Once again the top six bikes in Superpole are from six different manufacturers. Troy - 15th, 1:48.894 Generally I am reasonably happy with how today went, though obviously I wouldÔÇÖve preferred a position higher up the grid. Considering that we lost at least fifteen laps yesterday, I think we did pretty well and IÔÇÖm happy enough with the bike on race rubber. Once again, we had a problem when we put qualifying tyres on the bike and there was no improvement. Part of this, in Superpole anyway, might have been down to the fact that the track temperature was 44C and there are often problems when itÔÇÖs so hot. We also need to work on the bump absorption. At the moment, it is not so good and I cannot use the kerbs, like everybody else. Tomorrow morning, in the warm-up, weÔÇÖll try a different (shorter) swing arm. ItÔÇÖs something that IÔÇÖve been wanting to try and tomorrow weÔÇÖll give it a go and if it works OK then weÔÇÖll make more tests at the next round. My starts have been pretty good and itÔÇÖs a fair drag down to turn one, so if I can make good starts, I can at least be up with the leaders. Row two wouldÔÇÖve been better for sure, but letÔÇÖs see what happens tomorrow. See ya, Troy

Ayrton Badovini*will start from the second row of the grid of the race at Imola tomorrow. Ayrton was the fastest Italian having set the seventh fastest time.* Xavi Fores *continues to gain experience with the Superbike. In* Superstock* Barrier*is on the front row with* Zanettion the second.

The* BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team *claimed a place on the second row at the prestigious International Autodrome in Imola, thanks to the talented* Ayrton Badovini.*With an aggressive ride in Superpole 2, the Biella rider was able to go through to the finals in which he managed to set the seventh fastest time, placing him on the second row of the grid. Ayrton entered the Superpole phase, thanks to taking 15th in qualifying but in the morning free practice before Superpole he was running in the top ten.

Ayrton said: "I'm happy because we finally found the key to the problem. I am really pleased with the last time in Superpole 3 which was set on race tyres. ItÔÇÖs usual to set one quick lap in qualifying but I was consistently fast. I also want to thank my fans who have come in large numbers to support me here. "

For his part *Xavi Fores*continued his bonding with the Superbike, which only allowed him to set the 22nd fastest time that will see him start from the sixth row.

In* Superstock*a fall in the late stages of the session should not prevent* Sylvain Barrier from having a good race, as he achieved the third fastest time today.* Lorenzo Zanetti*will start from the second row but his distance from the leader should not prevent him from breaking into top positions in the race.

Serafino Foti, sporting director of BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team at the end of qualifying said: "It been a good day because, thanks to teamÔÇÖs hard work, we were able to improve on the situation yesterday. Ayrton gave us the rest. We are also ready for the race and we hope he can get a good start, staying in the top group.

Xavi has made a lot of effort to adapt to the high level of current Superbike. He has improved by about a second and a half from yesterday. The two races tomorrow will enable him to get more familiar with the bike.

There should be no physical consequences from SylvainÔÇÖs fall in the last minute of qualifying and the lap times are promising. He will definitely have a good race. Lorenzo, as can happen, had difficulties in practice, but I'm sure they will be behind him tomorrow."

Race 1

Sykes and his Kawasaki won the first lap followed by Checa Rea Laverty Haga Camier Melandri Haslam and Bodovini (Corser P14). By the time Live Timing recycled for sector 2 of lap 2 Camier had dropped to P22.

Sykes would hold the lead for the first third of the race until Rea took the lead. Haslam and Melandri were dueling for position. The pair traded positions a couple of times then on the 8th lap Haslam retired from the race. This left Badovini to uphold BMW honors.

Up front Rea and Haga were in a runaway fight for the lead. The gap to the P3 fight between Sykes and Checa was over six seconds as the race wound down. Ad another six seconds to the P5 fight between Laverty and Guintoli then another 8 to Smrz and Badovini then Melandri.

Rea was able to hold off Haga. Checa took the last podium spot from Sykes. Melandri was able to best Badovini who was the first BMW rider across the line in P9. Corser finished in P12.

Race 2 to come. Will Haslam and Fores make it back for the show? Time will tell.

The first Open class bike is the Metiss JLC Moto. The beginning of the race was quite hectic. Several crashes occurred during the early hours and the first one was from the Yamaha Racing France GMT 94 Ipone, during the fourth lap involving David Checa. Matthieu Lagrive hit the ground twice as he suffered from a faulty accelerator and from gravel left on the track. Seriously damaged, the Yamaha 94 had to give up just after 10 pm.In 13th position,* the BMW of 18 Sapeurs Pompiers Team also abandoned around midnight, after facing overheating problems and a faulty front fork oil seal. Just before 7 am, the Honda National Motos disappeared from the time sheet after crashing and so did the Bihr Metiss. Rea Haga Camier Checa Laverty Haslam. Haslam and Checa would each gain a spot on the next laps.

Attrition has taken its toll by the half way point. Fabrizio Baiocco Corser Sykes Rolfo and Smrz were listed as out of the race.

On lap 13 Berger and Fores were shown a lap down to the leader.

Defend or attack. This is the situation Haslam found himself in as he was sandwiched between P5 Laverty (he had taken the spot back) and Guintoli in P7.

Attacking was on Checa's mind. He moved to P2 then with five laps remaining he lit up in sector 1 as the leader and with four laps remaining took the top of the chart. Haga followed passing Rea for P2. Rea had gone from the lead to now almost 6 seconds behind Checa in P1.

Rea dropped like a stone through the field. With three laps remaining Checa was now in the lead with over three seconds in hand of Haga and more than 13 on Camier in P3. Haslam was still sandwiched in P5.

17 laps into the race Rea had gone from leader to the paddock. That is the route to the get to the podium. The trouble with that is the race was 21 laps.

The podium would be occupied by Checa Haga and Camier.

P4 Laerty and P5 to Haslam. Badovini would come home in P10.

Formula 1: Singapore GP

The race will start as a dry track with mild winds. Weather should not be an issue.

Schumacher and the Force India drivers have chosen to start the race on soft compound tires. They retained the tyre choice option by not turning a time in yesterdays Q3 session. Everyone else begins the race on their qualifying super-soft tyres. This could give them an advantage after the first round of pit stops but Vettel's dominance seems hard to overcome.

The race got underway cleanly. After the first lap the top 10 were Vettel Button Alonso Webber Massa Rosberg Schumacher Hamilton Sutil Di Resta. Hamilton had the worst start finding himself behind Schumacher. This is the place he struggled in for much of the last race.

Four laps into the race Vettel had already established a 4.4 second lead on Button in P2. Hamilton was able to get past Schumacher using the DRS zone and quickly began attacking Rosberg in an effort to get back to the front. He would dispatch Rosberg on the next lap in the same place.

As lap seven began Vettel had increased his margin over Button to 8.2 seconds. Some place in the opening laps HRT's Ricciardo damaged his wing and is already a lap down to the leader.

Lap 10 Vettel's lead is over 12 seconds as Rosberg heads into the pits. He is the firs to do so setting up a three stop plan for Mercedes apparently. Alonso Hamilton and others follow while Vettel and Button carry on out front.

Lap 13 Vettel's lead on Button is 11.5 seconds and a full 40.6 seconds to De Resta currently in P3.

Hamilton attacks Massa for position but miss judges tagging the Ferrari in the process. Massa is forced to pit for a new set of tyres. Hamilton soldiers on with front wing damage the incident under investigation and no doubt a penalty waiting the McLaren driver.

Lap 15 Vettel and Button both pit for a set of hards.

Hamilton is given a drive through penalty for tagging Massa. Massa is shown in P17 and Hamilton will go down from his current P19.

Lap 21: Vettel sets another fast lap time opening his lead over Button to 14.4 seconds. He has lapped the grid to P17 and should over take P16 Kovalainen in short order.

The top 10 parade order is Vettel Button Alonso Webber Rosberg Schumacher Sutil Di Resta Perez Maldonado.

Lap 22 Rosberg feels the need to be a the trend setter once again by pitting for the second time in his three stop strategy. This should set off a pit row flurry over the next couple laps. Have to give the viewers some excitement.

Lap 26 Schumacher breaks up the action by setting a new fast lap after warming his third set of tyres of the day. Massa does the same shortly after.

Lap 29 Rosberg and Perez were duking it out when Rosberg passed. Schumacher tried to follow and ended up in the wall bringing the safety car out. At this point Vettel had a 22+ second lead on Button. Both headed to the pits for the their second stop.

Lap 30 The field will bunch up in single file behind the safety car. Vettel's lead over Button will be gone. He was shown tohave lapped through at least P14 by this time.

The restart order will be Vettel Button Alonso Webber Di Resta Rosberg Sutil Perez Barrichello and Hamilton in the top 10 slots. (Don't hold me to this the field is being sorted out and additional pit stops taken for fresh tyres.)

No one seems to be able to beat Vettel today but the track. Will it get the best of him on the restart?

Replays show Schumacher tagging Perez in the rear and launching himself upward then directly into the wall. Ouch.

Lap 33 the safety car pits and Vettel goes purple in all sectors setting another fast lap and opening a 8.9 second lead over Button in P2 with the help of some back markers.

With Vettel blasting away from everyone the attention went to Di Resta in P5 and the line of cars behind him. Six seconds separate P5 and P11. Di Resta is followed by Rosberg Sutil Hamilton Perez Massa and Maldonado. This could get messy.

Fortunately is does not. Hamilton is the driver that charges through this pack. He is given wide berth by those he passes and on lap 38 he makes it past Di Resta and sets his sights on Alonso some 13+ seconds ahead at the time.

Insult to injury ÔÇô Kobayashi is under investigation for ignoring the blue flags being waved to usher Vettel past him. He may well suffer the embarrassment of being lapped and a drive through penalty.

Lap 41 Kobayashi is given a drive through and quickly serves his time for his part in holding Vettel's lead over Button to 13.0 seconds at this time in the race.

Superbike live timing is firing up to save me from this Singapore GP.

While I was gone Vettel opened up enough of a lead to pit without fear of being overtaken. Button set a series of fast laps at the close of the race in an effort to overtake but was unsuccessful.

Vettel wins!

Imola ÔÇô Races.
Sunday, 25 September 2011.

Weather conditions: Sunny.
Temperature: Air: 25 ÔÇô 28 ??C, Track: 36 ÔÇô 44 ??C
Number of riders participating: 22 from 14 teams
Fastest lap Race 1: Noriyuki Haga (PATA Racing Team Aprilia) 1:47.960 min
Fastest lap Race 2: Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) 1:47.943 min

After two promising days at Imola (ITA), Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport waited in vain for top results in todayÔÇÖs races. The team leaves the 11th round of the 2011 FIM Superbike World Championship with another top-five result under its belt. Factory rider, Leon Haslam (GBR), finished fifth in the second heat after he fell in race one. His team mate Troy Corser (AUS) finished 12th in the first race, but had to retire in race two.

In race one, Leon kept sixth place on the opening laps. Then he found his rhythm and was able to push, closing the gap to the front runners. After eight laps, he was only 0.2 seconds behind the leading group. But then he fell on lap nine and was forced to retire. Troy started from 15th and was able to make up some positions during the race. After the start of race two, Leon was fighting in the leading group. But then he struggled to go the pace of the front runners and had to settle for fifth. Troy made another good start, but then lost positions and retired on lap 11. The races were won by Jonathan Rea (GBR) and Carlos Checa (ESP). On the grid of the second race, Troy was given a special award by Infront for having achieved his 4000th world championship point at N??rburgring (GER) earlier this month.

In the ridersÔÇÖ championship, Leon is fifth with 187 points. Troy lies 15th with 71 points. In the manufacturersÔÇÖ standings BMW is fourth with 232 points. Ayrton Badovini (ITA) of the BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team finished ninth and tenth respectively. His team mate Xavi Fores (ESP) retired in the first race and came home 14th in the second.

In the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup race four BMW S 1000 RRs were classified in the top 10. Sylvain Barrier (FRA) from the BMW Motorrad Italia Superstock Team finished fifth, followed by Markus Reiterberger (GER) from the Garnier Alpha Racing Team in sixth. Baru Racing Team rider Michele Magnoni (ITA) finished eighth, Fabio Massei (ITA) of Team Piellemoto crossed the line in ninth.

At the 24-hour race at Le Mans (FRA), Team BMW Motorrad France 99 started with its RR from pole position and led until the halfway point, but then suffered technical issues and finished seventh.

Leon Haslam:
Result Race 1: DNF / Fastest Lap Race 1: 1:48.743 min
Result Race 2: 5th/ Gap to 1st: 00:17.388 min / Fastest Lap Race 2: 1:48.883 min
ÔÇ£In the early stages of race one I was struggling to push properly, but after a few laps I found a good rhythm and caught up to Tom and Carlos. Unfortunately I then got a false neutral. I went into the corner, the gear jumped out and in again and I fell. I am disappointed with the crash. For race two, we made some small changes to try and improve the bike, but the increase in air temperature meant things didnÔÇÖt work out as we planned. So I lost the contact to the leading group and just had to try and maintain my position.ÔÇØ

Troy Corser:
Result Race 1: 12th/ Gap to 1st: 00:26.444 min / Fastest Lap Race 1: 1:48.976 min
Result Race 2: DNF / Fastest Lap Race 2: 1:49.287 min
ÔÇ£In race one I did not get a bad start, but then I ran a little bit wide at the ÔÇÿTosaÔÇÖ-hairpin. We had made quite a few changes on the bike, so it took me a few laps to learn how to ride it. Once I had worked it out, I was able to push. In race two I felt something was wrong with the bike, as I could hear a strange noise coming from it. I am not sure where it was coming from or what it was but something wasnÔÇÖt right. So I decided to play it safe and pull in. It is a shame because I felt good and we could have scored some good points.ÔÇØ

Bernhard Gobmeier (BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director):
ÔÇ£After our good lap times on Friday and Saturday we, of course, expected more. In the first race we had a crash due to the bike jumping out of gear. Until then the lap times were great. In the second race the times were not that good anymore, so at the end of the day Leon finished fifth. This position was hard fought for, But there is room for improvement and we aim to transfer the information we have collected here into top results next week at Magny-Cours.ÔÇØ

The highlight for Troy in Imola today was a presentation from InFront Sports commemorating the fact that Troy has scored over 4000 points in the World Superbike Championship - comfortably ahead of any other rider. Although Troy did increase his overall points tally today it was just by four points - thanks to a 12th place in race one. He was forced to retire in race two, because of severe engine vibrations, and so scored no further points. Although Troy was generally happier with his bike today, the lowly grid position did nothing to help his cause this weekend, but he will take the weekendÔÇÖs positives and hope that Magny-Cours next weekend will be much better. Jonathan Rea (Honda) won race one, with Noriyuki Haga (Aprilia) second and series leader Carlos Checa (Ducati) third. Rea then comfortably led race two and was on course for a double until a problem with a battery connector put him out of contention. With Rea sidelined, Haga and Checa were left to fight it out for the lead. Checa slipped past Haga on the approach to the final chicane on lap 16 and was then never headed on his way to victory, over four seconds ahead of Haga at the flag, Third went to Leon Camier (Aprilia) with Eugene Laverty (Yamaha) fourth and Leon Haslam (BMW) fifth. Troy - Race 1: 12th, Race 2: DNF Although my results were not particularly good today, the things we tried on the bike in this morningÔÇÖs warm-up were an improvement and something that we can work on in the next round, so thatÔÇÖs a positive. We tried a different pivot point, a shorter swinging arm and the bike definitely felt better. In the first race it took a few laps to understand the effects of the changes and after that my lap times were pretty consistent, but by then the leaders had too much of an advantage and there was no way that I could catch them. For race two, we worked with the pivot point again so that we could get a bit more support and wheelie less. After a couple of laps the bike began vibrating and it steadily got worse and worse. I managed 12 laps and maybe couldÔÇÖve stayed out for more, but I was worried that the engine would get wrecked so I pulled in. It was a shame because I like this track - especially now that theyÔÇÖve resurfaced it - and felt pretty confident of a top six finish. I think I was just plain unlucky today and I hope that I donÔÇÖt get more of the same in Magny-Cours next week. ItÔÇÖs another track I like, so IÔÇÖm hoping to put my recent poor form behind me and get some good results. See ya, Troy

BMW MOTORRAD ITALIA SUPERBIKE TEAM - IMOLA ÔÇô RACE
25.09.2011

Ayrton Badovini*remains in the top ten in the world championship after a difficult weekend. Xavi Fores *wins his first point in World Superbikes.* Barrier*is fifth in the* Superstock, while, unfortunately,* Zanetti*falls. *

Ayrton Badovini had a long battle with Marco Melandri in race one, fighting for eighth place and finished in ninth, a result that allows him to acquire more precious points for the world standings. In race two, thanks to a good comeback, Ayrton managed to finish in the top ten. *

Ayrton said of the day: "Imola is a difficult track and very demanding physically and I started to suffer a bit at the end of race two. We finished with two good results, but I'm not happy, because we had the potential to do more. In race one it was very even with Melandri, and I confess it was also very funny. In race two I started badly and that forced me to climb from 18th position, finishing in tenth place. We're going to Magny Cours aware that we have a good chance, especially as we just received an engine update. I want to thank my fan club that has stayed with me, supporting me all weekend. " *

Xavi Fores, after retiring in race one, finished race two in fourteenth place, winning his first two World Superbike championship points. *

Results from* Superstock*were below expectations with* Lorenzo Zanetti*out of the picture on the second lap of the race. Lorenzo set up badly going into the first part of the low chicane before the finish line, putting him off line in the second half resulting in a fall. Sylvain Barrier,*despite the incident on Saturday took part in the race, reaching fifth place, a result which allows him to retain fourth position in the FIM Cup.

Serafino Foti,*sporting director of* BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team, commented on the dayÔÇÖs races: "We expected more after the test. Our current potential ranges from 5th to 10th place and but a series of problems has prevented us from doing better than AyrtonÔÇÖs 9th and 10th place finishes. Fores has struggled, but the goal was to finish both races. Unfortunately a technical problem stopped him in the first. Even in Superstock we had an unfortunate weekend. Sylvain was sore after the fall in practice and he miraculously finished the race with a very swollen knee. Lorenzo paid for the error on lap two, but unfortunately this is racing and you have to accept what happened. At this point, the championship is pretty much closed unless there are significant plot twists."

BMW Motorrad Motorsport - WSBK - Magny-Cours - Preview
27.09.2011
France ÔÇô Magny-Cours.
Preview.

30th September ÔÇô 2nd October 2011
12 of 13 race weekends

Munich/Stephanskirchen, 27th September 2011. The action is relentless as the 2011 FIM Superbike World Championship enters its final stage. Just one week after the Italian job in Imola, Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport heads to Magny-Cours (FRA) this weekend (30th September to 2nd October) for the penultimate round of the season.

After eleven race weekends, BMW Motorrad factory rider Leon Haslam (GBR) is fifth in the RiderÔÇÖs Championship with 187 points. His team mate Troy Corser (AUS) is 15th with 71 points. In total, the two have scored 258 points for Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport this season. In the ConstructorsÔÇÖ Championship, BMW currently lies fourth with 232 points. Only the manufacturerÔÇÖs best result from each race counts towards this competition.

Leon Haslam:
ÔÇ£Magny-Cours has always been a pretty good circuit for me. Last year, I rode my very first laps on the BMW S 1000 RR there. It is always a little bit cold when we get there, but it is the same for everybody. We have two races to go, and we definitely want to get back on the podium. These last couple of races are very important.

Magny-Cours is a circuit that should suit the RR. You have a lot of heavy downhill braking and corners that require you to switch down from sixth gear to fourth gear. As a result, the stability of the bike is once again very important for this circuit. It is also crucial to have the right set-up for the conditions.ÔÇØ

Troy Corser:
ÔÇ£Magny-Cours is quite a special circuit. It has lots of hairpins and some pretty fast chicanes. The grip there is normally pretty good. However, when we race there it can be quite cold, especially in the mornings. And then you have the possibility of rain. This can influence the grip level. WeÔÇÖll have to wait and see what the weather is like. I really enjoy the circuit. I had a few good results there, including some pole positions. It was also one of the first places where I actually tested the RR. So it will be nice to go back there, as I have some good memories.

Important factors at Magny-Cours are the top speed of the bike and the braking. You brake from very high speeds down to the slowest corners that we have on the calendar. This is especially the case on the end of the back straight, where you brake from over 280 km/h down to under 50 km/h. So you need good stability on the brakes and a smooth connection, as the corners are quite tight. I think our RR will work well there.ÔÇØ

Bernhard Gobmeier, BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director:
ÔÇ£We have a score to settle with Magny-Cours after last year. We want to reproduce the fine performances we have shown in recent races, but convert these into results that reflect the level of performance. We made more important findings in Imola last weekend, and are now looking to put these into practice in Magny-Cours. We hope the temperatures there are not so high. That would help us in terms of tyres and grip. In that case, we would have every reason to be confident. Our goal is to put on another excellent show and enjoy a successful penultimate race weekend.

Magny-Cours has already proven to be a successful stomping ground for the RR this season. The BMW Motorrad France 99 team finished on the podium there at the iconic Bol dÔÇÖOr, the first race in the Endurance World Championship, in which the team still maintains hopes of winning the title.ÔÇØ

Background:
The ÔÇ£Circuit de NeversÔÇØ is located 250 kilometres south of Paris in the town of Magny-Cours, in the French departement of Ni?¿vre. Work on constructing a racetrack began here in 1959. The circuit was opened in 1961 and modified for the first time ten years later. Since then it has been the subject of further modifications on several occasions.

Magny-Cours has a long tradition in motorsport and has hosted the iconic endurance classic, the ÔÇ£Bol dÔÇÖOrÔÇØ, since 2000. The FIM Superbike World Championship made its debut at the French circuit back in 1991. However, it was 2003 before it returned to Magny-Cours. Since then, the series has held its races there every year.

The circuit poses particular challenges for the teams and riders. The tarmac is extremely flat and offers little grip in some places. The frequently fluctuating weather conditions and gusty winds that sometimes blow through this region in the autumn can also make life tricky. The smooth surface soon becomes slippery when it rains.

Three hairpin bends give the circuit a unique stop-and-go feel. The track boasts a mixture of fast and slow sections. The first corner, which is taken in fourth gear, requires the bikes to be extremely stable. Good acceleration is important in the long ÔÇ£EstorilÔÇØ bend, in order to hit the following straight at speed. The riders must then brake hard for the ÔÇ£AdelaideÔÇØ hairpin. This is the slowest spot on the entire Superbike World Championship calendar. The bikes tend to pull wheelies upon exiting the bend. Over the remainder of the circuit, the bike must steer well into corners and accelerate powerfully out of tight hairpins and chicanes.

BMW factory rider Troy Corser has already achieved several pole positions and podium finishes at Magny-Cours. And the Australian celebrated his second world title there in 2005. His team mate Leon Haslam also claimed a podium finish there last year.

BMW MOTORRAD ITALIA SUPERBIKE TEAM - MAGNY COURS ÔÇô PREVIEW
28.09.2011

Ayrton Badovini is set for an aggressive race at the Magny Cours circuit this weekend. Xavi Fores will race in his second Superbike event. Zanetti and Barrier are expected to put up a fight in Superstock.*

The BWM Motorrad Italia Superbike Team, following the event at Imola which again saw Badovini in the top ten in both races, prepares for the penultimate round of the 2011 Superbike World Championship. Racing takes place next Sunday at the French circuit of Magny Cours, a short distance from the town of Nevers. The Italian team, led by Serafino Foti, will focus on maintaining a top ten place in the World Championship, an important goal for the teamÔÇÖs first year in the Superbike series.

Ayrton Badovini has ridden great races at the French track in the past. In addition to last year when he ran with the S 1000 RR, he rode the MV Agusta in 2007.*

Xavi Fores, will race for the second time on a Superbike and, while knowing the track, he last raced there in 2009. He will continue his apprenticeship in the saddle of a motorbike thatÔÇÖs more powerful than any he has ridden before.*

The Superstock team is expected to redeem itself after the event at Imola. Both riders suffered a fall and it is hoped that there will be no after-effects in France. Sylvain Barrier will certainly want a good race in front of his home crowd, trying to defend his current position of fourth in the FIM Cup. Last year Sylvain took a podium, finishing third. Lorenzo Zanetti*will be aiming to claim a top position. Just two points behind the rider ahead in second, Lorenzo will be looking to at least consolidate his third place in the FIM Cup. Lorenzo finished fourth at Magny Cours in 2010.*

Serafino Foti, sporting director of BMW Motorrad Superbike Team Italy, before leaving for France, said: "We go to Magny Cours confident of a good result. We seem to be benefiting from time and fortune and hope that Ayrton can again be riding at the front with the best in the series.Fores, after his Superbike debut race at Imola will have a better suited bike in France.I think in Superstock the series is more or less decided after ZanettiÔÇÖs fall in Imola, unless we have some serious plot twists. Regardless, we head to Magny Cours with our usual determination and we think that Sylvain will have a great race at his home track."

BMW riders topped the very early charts then tumbled down the charts as their qualifying strategies played out. Troy Corser had a very aggressive session regularly battling his way toward the top of the grid list. Leon Haslam's session seemed to be the cerebral game the team plays of late; doing just enough to safely advance to Superpole while working on other things. Aryton Badovini topped the charts early then fell down the standings only to bounce back and fall again. Being fast on Friday is always a good sign for the Italian Troop on Sunday. Fores spent Q1 on the bubble. He did not make it into Superpole this time but has the Saturday Q2 session to try and advance.

This was a strong Q1 for both BMW Troops. Riders and teams seemed able to respond to the advances of other teams while working on their setup strategies. I am cautiously optimistic for Saturday's sessions. I had a sense of life and aggression from the BMW Cavalry, that I have not had for some time, as I watched Live Timing. My caution comes from too many race weekends spent seeing the BMW Troops advance on Friday and stand still on Saturday while the other riders and teams pass bye.

BMW Motorrad Motorsport - WSBK - Magny-Cours - Qualifying Practice 1
30.09.2011

Magny-Cours ÔÇô Free Practice & Qualifying Practice 1.
Friday, 30th September 2011.

Weather conditions: Sunny.
Temperature: Air: 25 ÔÇô 29 ??C, Track: 38 ÔÇô 43 ??C
Number of riders participating: 18 from 12 teams
Fastest lap Free Practice: Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) 1:39.013 min
Fastest lap Qualifying Practice 1: Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) 1:38.652 min

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport is happy with the first day of the race weekend at Magny-Cours (FRA). The French track hosts the 12th and penultimate round of the 2011 FIM Superbike World Championship. In Free Practice in the morning factory riders, Troy Corser (AUS) and Leon Haslam (GBR), finished third and fourth respectively. In the first Qualifying Practice in the afternoon Leon qualified seventh and provisionally on the second row. Troy was ninth on his BMW S 1000 RR. Ayrton Badovini (ITA) and Xavi Fores (ESP) from the BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team finished in 13th and 17th respectively.

Leon Haslam:
Fastest lap Free Practice: 1:39.252 min (P4)/Fastest lap Qualifying Practice 1: 1:38.977 min (P7)
ÔÇ£This day was pretty good. We tried a few different options on the rear tyres for the race distance. It is not easy to find a good set-up for this circuit, so we worked on that. The lap times are not too bad at the moment. We are only three tenths off the quickest time, and I lose a lot of time in just one corner. Tomorrow if we can rectify the issue that we have in that one corner, then we should be somewhere close to the front.ÔÇØ

Troy Corser:
Fastest lap Free Practice: 1:39.241 min (P3)/Fastest lap Qualifying Practice 1: 1:39.025 min (P9)
ÔÇ£The position where we ended up does not show how we are doing. We made some good improvements. Regarding times on race tyres, I would probably be around third or fourth. The set-up of the RR is pretty close to what I am looking for. The chassis settings are working quite well, and we are also pretty consistent. I did quite a few laps on the tyres and the times were pretty good. Now we have a few things to look at, but generally I am pretty happy with the bike. On race tyres we are there. In the end we didnÔÇÖt even put a new tyre on to safely qualify for Superpole, but saved it for tomorrow. This is where we should be.ÔÇØ

Rainer B?ñumel (Head of Race Operations):
ÔÇ£I think we are pretty competitive, especially on longer runs. The guys in front of us all did their best times on one single quick lap. We were doing well in the first session with both riders finishing in the top four. This is a good base. Our aim for tomorrow is to get both riders into Superpole 3, and I think it is possible.ÔÇØ

TroyCorser.com
Troy finished the first qualifying session at Magny-Cours with the ninth fastest time, and is happier with his bike on an opening day than he has been for most of the season. Troy chose to keep back one of his softer tyres at the end of qualifying today, for use tomorrow, and thatÔÇÖs when four of five riders went quicker. Up until then, Troy had been third quickest on the time sheets and settling down to one of his better first days of a race weekend. Although Troy ended ninth, the lap times are all once again very close, with the top sixteen separated by less than a second! Carlos Checa finished with a time of 1:38.652, with Eugene Laverty (Yamaha) second, local hero Sylvain Guintoli (Ducati) third and Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) fourth. Troy - 9th, 1:39.025 Considering that today is the first day of a race weekend, IÔÇÖm pretty happy really. The bikeÔÇÖs chassis was working well, responding to the changes we were making and I actually felt that I was riding the bike. The engine is still a bit peaky and the bike wants to spin up a bit too much, but generally itÔÇÖs been a pretty good day. We made some small changes to the front fork settings from the morning to the afternoon, but there was no real improvement. We also changed the damping on the rear spring this afternoon - and that was better for sure. When the track temperature went up this afternoon, the grip definitely lessened, but thatÔÇÖs something that always happens at this track. I was third fastest for a lot of today and only got passed when four or five riders put in soft tyres towards the end of the qualifying session. I decided not to use one of my soft tyres, so that I could use it tomorrow instead. Once again the lap times are very, very close and I think there is less than a second between the first and sixteenth rider. ThatÔÇÖs going to make Superpole very important, but if things continue as well as they have done today, I feel pretty positive about Sunday. See ya, Troy

BMW MOTORRAD ITALIA SUPERBIKE TEAM - MAGNY COURS - PRACTICE DAY 1
30.09.2011
The penultimate round of the Superbike World Championship:* Ayrton Badovini*spent the first day of qualifying for the weekend at Magny Cours working for the race.* Xavi Fores*is continuing learning the S1000RR BMW SBK. Sylvain Barrier fell in* Superstock*and Lorenzo Zanetti took fifth.

Today was an intense day of practice for the* BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team *at the Circuit de Nevers - Magny Cours (France) where the penultimate round of the 2011 World Championship takes place on Sunday.

Ayrton Badovini*worked on set-up for the race, without looking too closely at the stopwatch. He set the 12th fastest time in free practice and 13th in qualifying. In the latter especially, Ayrton rode on the same tyres throughout to select the best set-up for race conditions. More tyres will be available for setting quick times tomorrow.

Xavi Fores, meanwhile, is getting to grips with the S 1000 RR Superbike, qualifying seventeenth. The Spaniard continues his work learning the Superbike on his second outing with the Superbikes.*
Sylvain Barrier*started the day in* Superstock*setting the fastest time in free practice in the morning, but in the afternoon the Frenchman was the unintentional protagonist of a spectacular crash at the end of the straight before the finish line, fortunately without serious physical consequences. It was, therefore,* Lorenzo Zanetti* (seventh in the morning) that put in the best time in qualifying in the afternoon, setting the fifth fastest time.

Serafino Foti, sporting director of BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team at the end of the first day of practice commented: "Although the position is not the best, we are quite satisfied and we are trying to work for the race. Ayrton used a single set of tyres because it was important to work on the bike with used tyres.Fores did not really go wrong because he is just one second from the leader. He went much better than at Imola, and every time he is on track his pace improves.Unfortunately, in Superstock, Barrier fell on the first lap, but without serious consequences, but as it stands he has not qualified for the race. Hopefully tomorrow will manage to go as far up the grid as possible. Lorenzo is performing true to form and is always stronger in the race."

Saturday, 1 October : Update ÔÇô Qualifying ÔÇô WSBK Magny Cours, MotGP Motegi

SBK

A roller coaster day of qualifying at Magny Cours as Rea hammers out Superpole win.

Marco Melandri topped Saturday's second qualifying session. The BMW riders were in attack mode moving up the qualifying chart to P4 Badovini, P5 Haslam and P6 Corser.

The second free practice times normally tell little as teams are using them to work on a variety of things. The session is used to work on Sunday setups and sort out any sandbagging that has been done in the second qualifying session before moving on to Superpole.

Superpole 1 knocked out Badovini. He moved from P4 in Q2 to the slowest rider in the first Superpole session. Haslam and Corser's positions may be explained to us as tyre management and doing just enough to advance.

Superpole 2 was the knock out round for Corser who took up the Enigma Rider position of being last in the session times. Haslam on the other hand came home in P3 for this session.

Superpole 3 was hard fought with seven of the eight participants blanketed by one second. Q2 winner Melandri dropped to the bottom of the session and the only rider not to find a spot under that blanket. Haslam nudged him out from under it.

Rea took Superpole 3 and the pole for both Sunday races with his Castrol Honda. Melandri's teammate Laverty put his Yamaha next. Checa was not to be totally denied and came in third. In the absence of Champion Biaggi Camier upheld Aprilia's honor and put them on the front row in P4.

A crazy day of qualifying. A second row start is not bad for Haslam. He appears to have the pace this weekend to run up front. A good launch at the start could put him high in the race for the turn three lead and a spot on the podium. Time will tell how he and the rest of the Enigma riders will do.
