indiancarsbikes.in: Honda plans 500 to 1000cc motorcycles for India
This ups the anti for the motorcycle industry on the sub-continent. Will BMW take part or remain on the sidelines? BMW's products have been very well received by the Indian motorcycle press; however, the motorcycles are subject to heavy tariffs and the independent importer of the marque is adding hefty markups to the price. Will they begin a CKD plant similar to the their successful Brazilian operation and or change the terms with their importer (or find a new one)?

Qualifying

2 Hamilton
3 Vettel
4 Alonso
5 Massa
6 Rosberg
7 Button
8 Sutil
9 Petrov
10 Schumacher

A fun qualifying session at the German GP. Webber takes the pole. On hard tyres in Q1 teams appeared more interested in sorting who was going to take P17 and beyond than posting hot times. Hamilton stole the show dominating Q2 by taking almost a full two seconds off his Q1 time to lead the session. Q3 saw the pole change hands as McLaren Ferrari LRGP and Red Bull Drivers took turns trying to top the field. In the closing minutes Hamilton looked prepared to take the pole when Webber sealed it for him in the final round of hot laps. Vettel seemed a quarter step off pace in all the sessions leaping forward with Webber but just behind.

The big three fill the first rows and are clearly a notch ahead of those that follow when you look at all three sessions. Rosberg pulled a good lap in Q3 to take his grid position but both Mercedes are dealing with handling problems and look to be among the lapped cars when the race results are turned in.

F1 update - German GP

Webber lead the field away on the formation lap only to yield the race lead to Hamilton when the red lights went out and the race to turn one began.

Webber and Vettel took turns setting fast lap times but Hamilton continued to lead the field. His team mate was not as fortunate. By lap 8 Button fallen down the charts and was listed in P10 and under attack from Kobayashi in his Sauber.

Heidfeld and Di Rista spun in turn three to start the race and fell to the back of the pack. Di Resta had the better recovery and was in P15 when the first pit stop round began. Heidfeld was up to P15 before he had another shunt and beached himself in the gravel ending his race 10 laps into the event.

On the same lap Vettel spun but recovered unscathed and began charging again.

13 was not a lucky number for Hamilton. A small mistake allowed Webber to pass him and take the lead. 14 was better and Hamilton retook the lead from Webber who fell into Alonso's clutches. The Austrailian pitted to get new shoes for the high speed dance Hamilton Alonso and he had going.

Hamilton and Alonso pitted at he same time on lap 17. When they did they held approximately a sixteen second lead on Massa, then in P3, and the rest of the field. Massa was under heavy presure from Webber at the time. After Alonso was out of the Ferrari pit he ducked in for his first stop yielding the lead to Webber with Hamilton and Alonso in hot persuit. He responded by setting a new best lap on lap 18.

On board cameras were showing more spots of rain at the time. This did not stop Hamilton from responding to Webber by setting a new fast lap on 19. At this point Webber Hamilton and Alonso were within two seconds of each other and opening the gap to the est of the field lead at this point by Sutil a full 11 seconds behind the leader at this point.

Back a few grid spots Massa and Vettel were picking their way through the grid after their pit stops had dropped them down the list. Massa would set the opponent up for a pass and Vettel would take advantage an follow.

Twenty four laps into the race Button had worked himself back to P4 but had yet to pit. When he dove in on this lap he yielded that spot to Massa and rejoined in P8. His stop was the final stop of the first round for the top ten. In order on lap 25

Two point seven seconds covered P1-3 with the rest of the field lagging almost 23 seconds behind them. The leaders had lapped through P18. Vettel was warned that he may be having rear bake problems.

While all of this was going on Barrichello retired from the race, Schumacher spun and slowly returned to the race.

Lap 31 Webber came up in red as he was listed as pit in. He yielded the lead to Hamilton who quickly yielded it Alonso and his Ferrari as he followed Webber into the pits. The McLaren pit was quick and Hamilton kept a 0.7 second lead on Webber as they returned to the race. Alonso had opened the gap from them to just over 16 seconds attempting to gain enough advantage to retain the lead when he pits.

Alonso was unable to pull it off. He pitted on lap 33 returning ahead of Webber but just behind Hamilton. With his tyres all warmed up Hamilton proceeded to pull a new fast lap and gained a bit of separation. 1.7 seconds then 2.4 as he set another best lap for lap 34.

The trio of Hamilton Alonso and Webber were clearly the cream of the field at this point. They were the only cars to have completed two scheduled pit stops and still they held nearly an 8 second gap to Massa in P4.

Hamilton in P1 and Webber in P3 may be hearing 'foot steps'.

Lap 36 Hamilton set another best lap while Button his teammate pitted and retired from the race with hydraulic problems. He joins Barrichello and Heidfeld on the retirement list. Vettel was still on the track in P5 but his brakes remained an open question. Would their teammate's gremlins attack them? Alonso P2 probably not sharing those kinds of fears. Massa was in P4 at the time and very slowly narrowing the margin Webber held on him.

Lap 41 the Nurburgring ate another car. Luzzi pitted his HRT and walked away form the car.

Two thirds of the way through the top ten in order
Hamilton
Alonso
Webber
Massa
Vettel
Sutil
Rosberg
Kobayashi
Petrov
Schumacher

Vettels brakes worked well enough to lock them up on lap 42. Massa pitted from P4 and was heading back to the frey. Vettel was pressing to make his way past him to take the spot but Massa defended, Vettel locked them up and took the escape road to avoid a crash. Two laps latter Vettel's pit observed his brakes were working fine now.

The leaders were on soft tyres. They still had to do a change to the hards that no one likes. How late will they hold off to do this.

As I typed that sentence niggling thoughts of the lack of passing came into focus. Webber in P3 was 8.6 seconds behind Hamilton in P1. Massa in P4 wass 45.0 seconds behind the leader. Petrov in P10, the last points paying position, was listed 1 lap down to the leader. I had been having fun banging away with commentary about minutia while the fan in the stands were sitting in their high priced seats watching another F1 parade.

Ten laps to go and the leaders had not pitted. Petrov was the first to go to hards and rapidly lost pace. Lap 52 Hamilton rolled the dice and pitted from the lead for the mandatory round on hards and returned in P3.

Hamilton was listed 17.6 seconds behind Alonso when the Spaniard ducked on lap 54 into the Ferrari pit for his set of hards. Ferrari was fast but not fast enough and Alonso was shown in P3 after his stop. Webber in the lead still needed to make his final stop.

With six laps to the end the big question is to see when? Apparently Red Bull had hopped that Webber on old softs could open a gap over the hard shoed Hamilton and Alonso that would allow him to pit and return in P1, but Hamilton did not cooperate. He kept improving his lap times and was only 11.7 seconds behind when Webber pitted on lap 57. When he returns Hamilton and Alonso are in front of him.

For all the discussion and drama surrounding the hard tyres lap 59 Hamilton set a new fast lap for the race.

Massa and Vettel pit on the final lap for their mandatory change. When they returned the order was Vettel Massa.

The chequered flag fell and Hamilton took the win for McLaren.

The provisional finish

1 Hamilton
2 Alonso
3 Webber
4 Vettel
5 Massa
6 Sutil
7 Rosberg
8 Schumacher
9 Kobayyashi
10 Petrov

11 Perez
12 Alguersuari
13 Di Resta
14 Maldonado
15 Buemi
16 Kovalainen
17 Glock
18 D'Ambrosio
19 Ricciardo
20 Chandhok
Retired
Luzzi
Button
Barrichello
Heidfeld

An incident between Buemi and Barrichello is under investigation. The result of that will be announced after the race and could change the filed order.

P1-6 were listed on the lead lap with Sutil being 60.2 seconds behind Hamilton. P16 was a two laps down. P17-19 three laps down and P20 four.

F1 has figured out how to make qualifying and pit stops important exciting parts of races. The total emphasis on fast laps in clean air along with gimmicks requiring straights have taken passing and real racing out of the mix.

Hamilton is celebrating a hard fought win. I had fun doing my race thing. TV fans will have help from the director putting multiple camera shots together to hopefully create an entertaining race. I wonder about the fan in the stand. I fear they will walk away wondering why they spent the euros to get in.

A hard fought win for McLaren.
A podium finish for Ferrari.
Question marks for Red Bull; do they have the legs to bring the titles home?

9 of 13 race weekends
*

Munich/Stephanskirchen, 25th July 2011. The FIM Superbike World Championship circus moves on to Great Britain. The iconic Silverstone circuit will host the ninth round of the 2011 season this weekend (29th to 31st July). The Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport will be back to full strength: following his injury-enforced break, works rider Troy Corser (AUS) will make his race comeback alongside team mate Leon Haslam (GBR). Troy broke the ulna and radius in his left arm when he crashed at in the second race at Motorland Arag??n (ESP) and was unable to race in Brno (CZE).

The time-honoured circuit in Silverstone has been the subject of extensive modifications over the last two years. The riders in the FIM Superbike World Championship are already familiar with the revised track layout through the new ÔÇ£Silverstone ArenaÔÇØ, having experienced it last season. They will now also move into the imposing new pit and paddock complex, the ÔÇ£Silverstone WingÔÇØ, which was opened in May this year. In the process of the modifications, the start-finish straight has been repositioned, meaning the riders must get used to a slightly new layout.

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport has prepared for the coming race weekend with two test days at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz (GER). Leon and BMW Motorrad test rider Steve Martin (AUS) were in action there on 18th and 19th July. Together with the team, they came up with setup suggestions and technical solutions for Leon and TroyÔÇÖs BMW S 1000 RRs, which will be implemented in Silverstone.

Having completed eight of the 2011 seasonÔÇÖs race weekends, Leon is currently fifth in the RidersÔÇÖ Championship on 137 points, while Troy is fifteenth on 55 points. In total, the pair has already scored 192 points for the Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport this season. In the ManufacturersÔÇÖ Championship, for which only the manufacturerÔÇÖs best result at each race counts, BMW is fourth on 173 points.

Leon Haslam:
ÔÇ£Silverstone is always a special race for me, as we are racing in England. I am looking forward to going back there. Last year it was a new track for everyone. I really enjoy the characteristics of the new layout. It is a fast, flowing circuit, a bit like a mix of Monza and Assen. In some sectors the setup of the motorcycle is a major factor.
*
In addition, thrilling racing is always guaranteed at Silverstone. Taking the BMW S 1000 RR there will be exciting ÔÇô especially as we are racing in front of my home crowd. I hope we will get some good weather and canÔÇÖt wait to go there.ÔÇØ
*
*

Troy Corser:
ÔÇ£After my injury in Arag??n, I am now really looking forward to jumping on my bike again. I have been back in physical training for the last couple of weeks, and I do not feel any pain in my arm. I rode dirt bikes just to check how fit I am, and all feels good.*
*
Our performance in Silverstone was not too bad last year, unfortunately I crashed in the second race. The bike worked well there ÔÇô you obviously need a fast engine, this should suit us well. Leon and Steve Martin tested a few things at Lausitzring in preparation for the Silverstone races. I am optimistic that the test results will help to improve the bike further.
*
The new pit complex looks impressive on TV, but the track still looks quite bumpy. The new position of the start-finish straight now leads into a quite tight and bumpy first corner. I think it is even more important now to start the races from the front of the grid.ÔÇØ
*
*

Bernhard Gobmeier, BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director:
ÔÇ£There is always a great atmosphere in Silverstone. You can feel the long tradition of racing at every corner. We are looking forward to the new pit lane, which was only opened this year. Silverstone is always a bit special for our two riders: as an Englishman, Leon is racing at his home event, and it is TroyÔÇÖs second home. We are pleased to welcome Troy back on board after his injury.
*

We completed some testing in preparation for the race weekend, at which we tried out some new ideas and technical solutions for Silverstone. We think we found good solutions during this test. We want to follow on from the good performances we put in during the first part of the season.ÔÇØ
*
*
Background:
Silverstone is a quiet town with 2,000 residents in the English county of Northamptonshire. The closest large cities are Northampton ÔÇô about 25 kilometres to the north ÔÇô and Oxford ÔÇô about 50 kilometres to the south. However, the heart of British motorsport beats in this rural area. The ÔÇ£Silverstone CircuitÔÇØ is not known as the ÔÇ£Home of British Motor RacingÔÇØ for nothing.

The iconic circuit was built after the Second World War on the grounds of an RAF base set up in 1943. The first car race was held there in 1948, with the very first race in the Formula One World Championship staged in Silverstone in 1950. The FIM Superbike World Championship first came to Silverstone from 2002 to 2007. After a two-year break, the series returned to the circuit in 2010 following extensive modifications of the track.

In 2010 the revised layout took the Superbike World Championship riders through the new ÔÇ£Silverstone ArenaÔÇØ for the first time, which was designed specifically for the needs of motorcycles. An 800-metre long, stadium-style sector was added between the Abbey and Brooklands corners. Renowned corners including Maggotts, Becketts, Copse and Stowe were retained.

The imposing new pit and paddock complex, the ÔÇ£Silverstone WingÔÇØ, was opened in May 2011. It is located between the Club and Abbey corners and has resulted in the start-finish straight being moved accordingly. As a result, the riders must get used to a new pit lane entrance and exit this year, although they are actually familiar with the circuit layout from last seasonÔÇÖs race.

Built on a former airfield, the ÔÇ£Silverstone CircuitÔÇØ is a very flat circuit. This means that the engine performance of the BMW S 1000 RR is particularly important here, as there are several long straights. The circuit also offers some long corners, in which one side of the tyres will be put under particular strain. For this reason, a sensitive throttle response also plays a major role. The new layout also features some stop-and-go corners, in which the circuit throws up a mixture of quick and slow, technical corners. The circuit is physically very tiring and has some tricky bumps, which must also be taken into consideration when setting the bike up. One place in which these bumps are lurking is the new opening corner, Abbey.

For BMW Motorrad works rider Leon Haslam (GBR), Silverstone is the second home race of the year in Britain. However, LeonÔÇÖs team-mate Troy Corser (AUS) also feels at home here, as he spends most of his time with his family in England.

BMW Motorsport: Belgium: Overwhelming victory in superbike championship.

Ten victories in ten races were enough for BMW Team Herpigny and rider Gr?®gory Fastr?® to successfully defend their title in the Belgian Superbike Championship with races to spare.

Munich, 26th July 2011. BMW Motorrad would like to congratulate Belgian Team Herpigny Motors – BMW Motorrad and rider Gr?®gory Fastr?® (BEL) on an impressive defence of their title in the 2011 Belgian Superbike Championship. Fastr?® has been the dominant rider in this series, and was able to book his place on the top step of the podium at every one of the ten races so far. Another double success last weekend in Chimay (BEL) was enough to secure his second successive Belgian championship on the BMW S 1000 RR.

In the overall standings, Fastr?® has the maximum 250 points and a lead of no less than 94 points over the rider in second place. With just two races remaining, the Belgian‟s lead is now unassailable. Team Herpigny Motors – BMW Motorrad now plans to send Fastr?® and his BMW S 1000 RR into action at the final round of the European Superbike Championship in Albacete (ESP) in early October.
The next important race for Team Herpigny Motors – BMW Motorrad team is the 6 hours endurance race at Spa-Francorchamps (BEL) on 13th August. This is a crucial round of the Belgian Moto Endurance Championship 2011, as double points are up for grabs. The team, with riders Fastr?® and Vick de Cooremeter (BEL), has also been unbeatable in this series. After five victories in the first five races of the season, Fastr?® and de Cooremeter now hold a 32-point lead in the overall standings with their BMW S 1000 RR. They are now aiming to make a big step towards the title at the important race in Spa-Francorchamps.

“A result like this is simply fantastic. We congratulate the Herpigny team and „Fast Gr?®g‟ on their title win and this extraordinary run of success,” said Berthold Hauser, head of the specialist "BMW Motorrad HP Race Support" department. “This type of title win requires perfect teamwork in every aspect and a bike that is working very well. It would appear that Gaetan Herpigny‟s team have managed to implement this perfectly. We were able to support the team very effectively with various tips and assistance at the start of the season. For that reason, we are all the more delighted with how the guys have converted everything into this success. We wish the team luck for the remaining races in the championship, as well as the 6 hours race in Spa-Francorchamps!”

De Cooremeter made a successful debut at international level last weekend in Chimay. MSF Question of the Day:

MSF Tip of the Day:

Bike Candy

When the Kawasaki Mach III triples were grabbing the headlines for their straight line performance I was spending time on an Kawasaki Avenger 350cc twin. The press cursed the Avenger with the title of 'pound for pound' one of the best motorcycles around. The trouble it was one of the best bikes I have had balancing power chassis capabilities and ergonomics but it never sold well in the US.

The triples would go like mad in a straight line but they had horrible reputations for chassis flex and thus did not turn well. Friends mounted on triples would leave me in the dust when we head out for the country, but even with my giant economy sized frame astride it the Avenger acquitted itself much better when we came to winding roads. The 350 had a bit more power than the 250s of the day. The imprtant difference is that it made its power over a more useable range than its smaller siblings that better matched the capabilities of the early 70s frame techniques Kawasaki was using on all three made it a fun bike.

moj5-kawa-A7-2-S.gif

I have spent a lot of time and money trying to find a scaled up balance of power and handling I enjoyed on the little Avenger twin. In the day I often wondered how the triple would handle in a stiffer frame. I really wonder after looking at today's bike candy.

Time for BMW to head to the drawing boards and come up with S1000RR.2 The RR has never taken kindly to Pirelli doughnuts and I suspect this is in large part it was designed with street tyres from another supplier in mind. The Geek-gnomes have not been able to work remedial magic to date that compensates for this at the WSBK level of competition. It is time in the development history to take what has been learned and many sets of Pirellis head back to the drawing board and come out with the next gen bike.

BMW Motottad France Team 99 en route to Suzukabo

The third event of the World Championship, FIM Qtel of Endurance will be held this weekend at the Japan on the famous circuit of Suzuka, very much appreciated by the three pilots of Team BMW Motorrad France 99. Second of the interim classification of the World Championship at only two points of the first (used), the objective of this test is clear for the BMW Motorrad France 99 Team: take the lead in the Championship.

S?®bastien Gimbert: "I am really looking forward to return to Suzuka, I have only memories out there including my first Grand Prix in 1998.". I much enjoyed this circuit it matches my cockpit more so I am confident for this mythical event which still remains one of the most relieved because for the Japanese who compete for Suzuka is an important race see decisive for their careers so they are all there. This gives a very high pilot level but also the presence of high-performance ultra material which makes it somewhat inaccessible victory; I am pressed to try the bike that we prepared Steven, the team is progressing well so we can consider a good performance this weekend. ??

Erwan Nigon: "as S?®bastien I appreciate enormously the circuit that I could find when I rode in Grand Prix 250cc." I am really in a hurry to return to and especially with this bike and this team that works great for us to beat us at the forefront. Our goal for this race is essentially about the Championship; We need to score more points that serves to start from the Japan at the top of the World Championship. ??

Damian Cudlin: "Suzuka is a mythical event which I had the chance to participate since 2005." I therefore know very well the circuit and even if I could ride under good conditions the previous years there, I differently addresses him this year. Indeed I'm rather serene and confident, I think that the S 1000 RR is a motorcycle that goes well to adapt to this path, I know that the team heavily worked to prepare for this race, Michelin will provide good tyres and that my teammates will be as always at the height so we can claim a beautiful performance this weekend. ??

Steven Casaer, Manager of Team BMW Motorrad France 99: "We know that to win this test to Suzuka for teams is European, so our strategy will be similar to that of the Golden Bowl which was to secure and prevent falls instead to Albacete where the strategy was to attack from the outset." Today we have managed to prepare a machine close to what it idealizes but we are aware that the rest novice. our objective team will not be reviewed downwards, the S 1000 RR is an excellent machine, Michelin provides very good tyres and we have three excellent pilots, therefore we are obliged to be a fine performance at Suzuka. We have only two points behind the interim classification of the Championship on serves, therefore, our goal is to start from Suzuka at the top of the Championship even if our lack of experience and rolling them will penalize us, we must all do and everything to get there... ??

leaonhaslam.com: Chasing victory
*BMW’s Leon Haslam is chasing victory in this weekend’s ninth round of the World Superbike Championship at the Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire, GB.
Haslam is fifth in the Championship after two podium finishes and 12 top 10 finishes from the 16 races so far.

“Silverstone is an important round for me and I’m pretty confident that I can challenge for a podium finish and even a race win,” said Haslam. “We continue to improve the BMW S1000RR and I’m optimistic that we’re arriving at Silverstone with an improved package.”

Haslam finished third and fourth in the two Silverstone races last year and returns to the 3.666-mile circuit (5.902km) looking to at least repeat those results and his 2011 podium finishes of the Australian and Italian rounds.

“The Silverstone circuit is fast and flowing, like Assen and Monza, and I’m really keen to get the BMW set up as I think it will suit the circuit,” added Haslam.

As part of his support for his chosen charity SPARKS – SPorts Aiding medical Research for KidS – Haslam will wear a unique Arai helmet for the Silverstone races. The helmet captures the distinctive blue colouring and the stars of the SPARKS logo.

Haslam commented: “I love the design that Arai has produced for this helmet and hopefully the helmet can generate further awareness for SPARKS and the essential work they do and eventually bring a big donation when it’s auctioned off.”

BMWgroup-sport.com: BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team – Silverstone preview

At this weekend’s ninth round of the Superbike World Championship taking place at Silverstone, the BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team will be back to its full complement with James Toseland’s riding alongside Ayrton Badovini. Last week James tested at Mugello and is ready to race at his home event. *The BMW Motorrad Italia Team STK aims to continue the strong and improving results from recent races. *

The ninth round of the Superbike World Championship 2011 is scheduled for next Sunday on the remodelled circuit at Silverstone (Great Britain). The circuit is considered to be the UK’s ‘temple of speed’. Home-rider Toseland tried to make his track return at the last event but after the first run in Friday’s Free Practice his wrist was sore and he was advised to delay his comeback. Last week, however, James ran without problems for a whole day at the Mugello circuit, confirming his physical recovery. *James Toseland won race 2 at Silverstone in 2005 on the old layout, and last year scored an eighth and a fifth.

Ayrton Badovini won the Superstock FIM Cup race on the English track last year - claiming the FIM Superstock 2010 Cup at Silverstone – but he has not ridden the new track on a Superbike. The goal is to continue Ayrton's strong results from recent races - in which he has consistently scored in the top ten - and retain his eighth position in the World Superbike Championship rankings. *

It is an important race for the BMW Motorrad Italia Superstock team which wants to reiterate it’s strong points scoring and finishes. Barrier took his first victory in the last race in Brno, reaching 4th place in the rankings. Zanetti, who had raced at Brno despite being injured, wants to improve on his the 3rd place finish from that race. The Italian is currently ranked number 2 in the FIM Superstock Cup.
Serafino Foti, sporting director of BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team, said: "We are delighted that James will finally return. After a day of testing at Mugello, where we found that, while the wrist still isn’t 100%, he will still be able to manage the two races at Silverstone. James is very motivated and eager to back on the bike. Our goal is to finish both races and get the best possible result even if we are aware of the limitations. Ayrton is also very motivated and Silverstone is a track that he likes. We will do our best to be in the top ten. *In Superstock, it is time for our riders to attack and improve positions in the standings. It will not be easy but we are working hard to get the best results we can in the championship."

August is just around the corner and will bring 'Silly Season' rumors, posturing and announcements. Both troops of the Enigma Cavalry will feature in the press. Will Haslam leave? Who will replace Corser if he does indeed retire? Will Toseland saddle up along Badovini in 2012? These are always fun stories.

The really important silly season signings won't be the riders; however. Lost in the background are the negotiations and decisions around who will be the chassis designers, electronic geeks and engine gurus for each team in 2012. These are the people that really separate the riders that qualify race in race out, season in season out in Superpole 3 and win podium spots.

In our Walter Mitty day dreams we dress ourselves in the same leathers and helmets as our favorite troopers, mount our BMWs and head out to ride. I am confident in the care my steed has received in my garage. While the grooms in the BMW paddock are infinitely more more qualified than I, I do not have the same confidence in the steeds they are turning out to take to the track.

The groom signings for 2012 will be the real news we will not read. They are the ones that will determine how the Enigma Toopers do when they go into racing battle for 2012.

Silverstone ÔÇô Free Practice & Qualifying Practice 1.

Friday, 29 July 2011.
Weather conditions: Overcast.
Temperature: Air: 19 ??C, Track: 21 ÔÇô 23 ??C
Number of riders participating: 22 from 12 teams
Fastest lap Free Practice: John Hopkins (Samsung Crescent Racing) 2:06.667 min
Fastest lap Qualifying Practice 1: Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) 2:05.477 min

It was a productive Friday for Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport at the ninth round of the 2011 FIM
Superbike World Championship in Silverstone (GBR). After a two-day test at Lausitzring (GER) the
team brought some new parts to the circuit. While factory rider Leon Haslam (GBR) qualified
provisionally tenth, his team mate Troy Corser (AUS) returned to the bike after missing the last
round of the championship in Brno. He finished the first Qualifying Practice 18th.
The two riders from the BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team, James Toseland (GBR) and Ayrton
Badovini (ITA), finished in 12th and 13th respectively.

Leon Haslam:
Fastest lap Free Practice: 2:07.100 min (P7)/Fastest lap Qualifying Practice 1: 2:06.116 min (P10)
ÔÇ£I am pretty happy with todayÔÇÖs results. The bike has been stable all day, which is really positive.
This helped us focussing on setting up the S 1000 RR for the circuit. I was second until five
minutes before the end of the session. When everybody fitted the softer tyre I was the only one not
to be quicker than before. However, I am not concerned ÔÇô this is nothing we cannot solve for
tomorrow, so I am really confident.
ÔÇ£Here in Silverstone my helmet has a special design which is dedicated to Sparks. Sparks funds
research into serious conditions affecting the health of babies, children and mums-to-be. I have
worked with them for a few years, and this helmet will be auctioned at the end of the season.ÔÇØ

Troy Corser:
Fastest lap Free Practice: 2:07.064 min (P6)/Fastest lap Qualifying Practice 1: 2:06.890 min (P18)
ÔÇ£I am happy to be back on the bike after my crash at Aragon. I still feel some pain in my wrist, but
only when I am braking. In general, I donÔÇÖt think it affects my riding too much. The bike felt good and
easy to ride this morning ÔÇô the engine is much smoother which is good. We made some changes
later, but it didnÔÇÖt pay off. I think we still have some work to do to optimize the bikeÔÇÖs traction.ÔÇØ
Rainer B?ñumel (Head of Race Operations):
ÔÇ£The field is quite close ÔÇô the gap between the second and the 18th is only one second. We can be
happy with today. Troy suffered from chattering, and we have to sort this out for tomorrow. Leon
was second until the final outing. Unfortunately we changed the bikeÔÇÖs set up, and apparently we
did not benefit from it. Nevertheless, we are optimistic for tomorrow.ÔÇØ

BMW MOTORRAD ITALIA SUPERBIKE TEAM - SILVERSTONE - PRACTICE DAY
1

The BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team was at Silverstone in full-strength with James Toseland taking his place on-board
the S 1000 RR. A fall slowed Ayrton BadoviniÔÇÖs progress. The Superstock riders are on the provisional front row.

After setting an encouraging fourth fastest time during the first free practice session, James Toseland - returning after his accident
ÔÇô put in a twelfth fastest qualifying time, eight tenths of a second from provisional pole man Carlos Checa. The UK rider is still not on
top form but is showing that he is on the road to complete recovery.
James said: "I'm finally back and I'm home! IÔÇÖm still not 100 percent but I can push hard enough. Today was positive but we need to
improve. The objective is to finish the weekend with two results in the top ten. This morning I was fresh and was fourth in the first
hour which isnÔÇÖt hugely significant for the racing but very important for my own morale. I want to congratulate the team which, with
only Ayrton, has done a great job developing the bike and electronics. ItÔÇÖs a marked improvement. Unfortunately I still have pain in my
wrist and I had to resort to painkillers, but I'm confident that soon I will be fighting fit. "

The fall during morning free practice had an impact on Ayrton Badovini but he still managed to finish in thirteenth. The fall
seriously damaged the bike meaning additional work for the team. Ayrton was uninjured.

"This Friday was harder than usual.ÔÇØ Ayrton Badovini said after the sessions this morning. ÔÇ£The fall has affected the work and I had
to recover slowly and get to grips with the bike. We are still working to develop the bike, and are still unsure of choice of ratios. We will
work with the engineers to define the set-up and all the details. IÔÇÖm pragmatic because I know that once we get the bike right I can go
faster."

The BMW Motorrad Italia STK riders used their aggression to find speed, with Lorenzo Zanetti and Sylvain Barrier taking
third and fourth place on the timing sheet respectively. The riders who occupy the top two positions, for the time being, are not far
ahead and in second qualifying tomorrow Lorenzo and Sylvain can try to get even closer.

Serafino Foti, sporting director of BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Italy team, said: "The weekend started well enough: James has
finally returned, although not yet 100 percent. After five months of inactivity, if we are honest we didnÔÇÖt expect to top the tables but
we are not happy with twelfth. Tomorrow we will see how his wrist reacts but he certainly has a good margin for improvement. Ayrton
began badly, with the fall this morning in a fast corner, fortunately without consequences for him. This afternoon he had good grip
and has worked harder than usual. We are working to solve the problem. I'm pretty happy with the results of our two Superstock
riders. They have shown that they have a good pace for tomorrowÔÇÖs qualifying and will try to improve further. "

troycorser.com ÔÇô Troy unfazed by 18th on day one

Troy finished the first day of practice and qualifying at Silverstone with the 18th quickest time, but is only a second slower than the second fastest rider today. Once again the lap times are very close and TroyÔÇÖs position today is of some concern, but it is where he ends up tomorrow that matters. Series leader Carlos Checa (Ducati) led the charge today, posting a lap of 2:05.477. Second quickest was Maxime Berger (Ducati), with Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) third and Leon Camier (Aprilia) fourth. Troy - 18th, 2:06.890 The position today looks worse than it is - especially when you consider how close the lap times are. In the morning I tried some of the ideas they used in the recent tests and there were some definite improvements. The engine felt smoother and the slightly different electronics settings also helped. We also used a longer exhaust and all of these things helped us get more comfortable, more quickly. In the afternoon we tried some different things, but didnÔÇÖt find any further improvement so, in the end, we went back to the morning settings. The lap times are very close - as you can see - and weÔÇÖre just 1.4 seconds off Carlos (Checa) and just a second slower than the second placed rider - Berger. If I had gone half a second quicker, I wouldÔÇÖve ended 10th! WeÔÇÖre still struggling a bit with sorting out adjusting the bike to get the best out of used tyres. We can go fast on a very soft tyre and have good grip, but things change when the tyre gets worn out. At the moment there are no problems with my arm and it feels pretty good. IÔÇÖve been training and riding dirt bikes and have given it a pretty good workout, with no ill effects. My wrist felt a bit sore on heavy braking, but generally I feel pretty much OK. Hopefully weÔÇÖll have a good day tomorrow and qualify well. See ya, Troy

With the Superpole to go Hopkins uses his wild-card to take the lead in Q2. He is the loan 4 cylinder on a provisional front row filled with Ducatis. Haslam advances to the Superpole round in P8 with the BMW Motorrad Italia Troop (Toseland P14 and Badovini in P16). Defending champion Max Biaggi splits them in P15

Corser was not worried about yesterday's P18 but only able to improve one spot to P17 which was not good enough to advance to Superpole. Is that all he had in him or is he working a weekend strategy that conserves his beat up body to move from row five to a better points position finish in race one and two?

A hard fought qualifying session yields some very interesting results.

Hamilton is a force to be reckoned with. Q2 is often the faster qualifying round still. Hamilton broke the 1:20 barrier on his 10 qualifying lap to take the lead. It was not until the final round of hot laps that Vettel pipped him for the pole. Hamilton was still out but could not set a time to best the Red bull rival.

Most of Q3 was a war between the big 3 teams. Sutil Schumacher Rosberg and Perez sat in the pits watching waiting and preparing for their skirmish until it was time for the final round of hot laps.

In the final round of hot laps more drama would unfold. Alonso and Webber would fight hard but the Spaniard would relegate the Ausie to P6. The trouble for Alonso is Webber still lines up next to him on row 3 because teammate Massa bested him for P4.

Sauber spiced the session up with a bit of real team strategy. Perez did not set a time in Q3. This allows them the tire choice right up to the end. Sunday's warmup session becomes very important for them as a result. This is when they will make their final decision. This is not some coy dash for the top but a calculated risk for the race P7 fight and what finishing up the grid means to the smaller teams in sponsor dollars.

Qualifying was just as billed; a three way battle. The battle was between driver car and time clock. The battle on the Hungaroring qualifying battle ground will be one to remember. Unfortunately the race will probably will not. The field is set for the race to turn 1. The leader at the first lap will set the pit stop schedule and the outcome of the race.

BMW Group presents mobility of the future +++ World premiere of the BMW i3 Concept and BMW i8 concept +++ Reithofer: A milestone in the history of the company +++ Sustainability across the entire value added chain

29.07.2011
UPDATE

Frankfurt a.M. / Munich. The BMW Group showcases its visions of future mobility in the shape of the BMW i3 Concept and BMW i8 Concept studies. Unveiled for the first time, these concept vehicles provide a glimpse of the first electrically powered production cars from the new BMW i sub-brand, due to be launched as the BMW i3 in 2013 and the BMW i8 in 2014.

“We are marking another milestone in the history of the BMW Group. As Chairman of the Board and an engineer myself, I am very proud of this project,” declared Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, at Friday’s premiere of the two vehicles in Frankfurt. “As the world’s leading premium car manufacturer, our aim is to offer customers purpose-built electric-drive cars as well,” he added.

With its zero-emission electric drive and a range of approximately 150 kilometres, the BMW i3 Concept has been specifically developed for use in an urban environment, its dynamic 125 kW electric motor and rear-wheel drive ensuring BMW-style dynamic handling. Thanks to its innovative LifeDrive architecture featuring a carbon passenger cell, the BMW i3 Concept combines an extremely low weight of 1,250 kilograms with optimal interior space and the highest crash safety levels. With four seats and a 200-litre luggage compartment, this vehicle is fully suited for everyday use.

Draeger: a revolution in car design

“This vehicle will mark the launch of the first volume-produced car featuring bodywork largely made of carbon. It’s a revolution in automotive design,” stressed Klaus Draeger, Member of the Board responsible for Development. The application of this new CFRP technology allows a weight reduction, compared to a conventional electric car, of between 250 and 350 kilos, and that means more dynamic handling coupled with a greater range. The BMW i3 does the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in less than eight seconds, while a high-speed charger achieves an 80% battery charge in just an hour.

Thanks to the emission-free drivetrain and a value added chain designed to be sustainable all along the line, life cycle emission figures for the BMW i3 are at least a third lower than for a highly efficient combustion-engine car. If the BMW i3 is run on electricity from renewable sources, the figures improve by well over 50%.

BMW i8 Concept: new-generation sports car

The BMW i8 Concept goes from 0 to 100 km/h in less than five seconds and boasts fuel consumption of under three litres per 100 km. Its plug-in hybrid drive with a system output of 260 kW allows a range of up to 35 kilometres in electric mode – sufficient for most everyday journeys. For more dynamic driving or out-of-town routes, a high-performance three-cylinder petrol engine also comes into play. The sports car has an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h and space for up to four occupants. “The BMW i8 Concept is the sports car for a new generation – pure, emotional and sustainable,” Draeger underlined.
With BMW i, the BMW Group is corroborating its position as the most innovative and sustainable auto manufacturer in the world, as reflected in the fact that it has been the supersector leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes for the sixth year running. With BMW i, the BMW Group is providing answers to the mobility challenges of the future while pursuing a holistic approach. In addition to purpose-built premium vehicles with electric drive, the company is also offering intelligent mobility services.

The focus here is on solutions for improved use of parking space, intelligent navigation systems with location-based information, intermodal route planning and car-sharing schemes such as DriveNow. Following MyCityWay, ParkatmyHouse marks the second investment by the recently launched venture capital company BMW i Ventures in a company providing internet-based mobility services. Parkatmyhouse allows private individuals to use the internet or a smartphone app to rent out their private parking spaces on a short- or long-term basis.

Both the BMW i3 and the BMW i8 will be built at BMW’s Leipzig plant in Germany. Some 400 million euros are earmarked for investment in new buildings and facilities by 2013, while 800 new jobs are to be created. Vehicle production will be CO2 neutral and will draw on renewable resources. The company is currently investigating the possibility of erecting its own wind turbines on the plant site.

BMW i – a new understanding of mobility
The world, and with it the sphere of personal mobility, is experiencing a period of radical environmental, economic and social change. A rash of global developments such as climate change, the dwindling availability of resources and increasing urbanisation call for a new balance between the demands of the planet and the desires of the individual. Fresh solutions are required to underpin personal and, most importantly, sustainable mobility. The BMW Group has responded to this situation with the creation of a sub-brand which meets the changing needs of customers head-on: BMW i.
