BMW Ranks 4th on EPA’s Top 20 Green Power Partners for On-Site Power Generation
Spartanburg, S.C. - April 28, 2011... BMW announced today that its South Carolina plant has increased its ranking to No. 4 on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA's) Top 20 On-site Generation list of the largest green power users. In 2010, through BMW’s on-site landfill gas energy system, the company generated nearly 62 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of power. Simoncelli is picking up where he left off just before the crash in the last race. The Yamaha riders are waiting for improvements. Stoner and Rossi clocked the same times and if they arenÔÇÖt careful they too could pick up where they left off. Stoner is happy with the new clutch but isn't the idea to be faster on the track not faster bump starting? Rossi has been starting strongly on Friday only to fade as the race weekends have gone along. He feels good about his condition and many put him at 90% recovered. Is that enough?
With so many story lines it should be a good weekend of MotoGP in Estoril.

Munich/Stephanskirchen, 02nd May 2011. This weekend (06 to 08 May) sees the Monza circuit in Italy host the fourth round of the 2011 FIM Superbike World Championship. For Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport the legendary ÔÇ£Autodromo Nazionale di MonzaÔÇØ - situated north of Milan - represents very special territory: Last year the team celebrated its first FIM Superbike World Championship podium placing, achieved by works rider Troy Corser (AUS).
In the current season to date, Troy and team-mate Leon Haslam (GBR) have scored a total of 94 points for BMW. In the constructorsÔÇÖ championship, scored on the basis of only the best individual race result, BMW has 74 points to occupy fifth place. In the ridersÔÇÖ classification, Leon is in fifth position with 68 points, while Troy holds 12th with 26 points.
At this ultra-fast Monza circuit, Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport intends building on the good performances posted by both riders during practice for the last race weekend in Assen (NED). At the two bases in Munich and Stephanskirchen, the team worked together with Leon and Troy on finding solutions to unlock the full potential of the BMW S 1000 RR for Monza.
Previously BMWÔÇÖs works riders posted the following results in MonzaÔÇÖs Royal Park: Troy has a victory, five podium places, one pole position and twice set the fastest lap; Leon last year scored a podium.
ÔÇ£I am certainly looking forward to Monza. Last year Troy posted a podium place, and I like the circuit. In addition, I believe it suits our bike. After Assen I sat down with the team, and we worked out our plan for the weekend. We know where we stand with our bike, and what still needs to be done.
I am confident that at Monza we will take another step forward. We have already shown we can constantly race in the top five. We need to step up a bit in order to be in a position to fight for podiums and wins. Yamaha and Aprilia will be quick in Monza, but I have confidence in the package we have developed.ÔÇØ
ÔÇ£Last year we had a successful weekend in Monza, managing to celebrate our first podium place for BMW Motorrad Motorsport. From a riderÔÇÖs perspective Monza is not particularly challenging. Here it depends more upon the performance of the bike. It has fast sectors and zones, in which we need to brake very hard.
We need to ensure we overcome the issues we suffered with our tyres during Superpole in Assen on Saturday and during the second race on Sunday. We have worked hard at eliminating these problems. Our performances on hard tyres have shown we are going in the right direction. I am confident that we will be able to build on this in Monza.ÔÇØ
Bernhard Gobmeier, BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director:
ÔÇ£We are really looking forward to Monza. The team is travelling there with good memories, having scored BMWÔÇÖs first Superbike World Championship podium there last season. This fast circuit should suit our BMW S 1000 RR again this year.
We aim to continue building on our Friday and Saturday morning performances in Assen. There Troy and Leon proved our competitiveness with some top times. We are extremely confident this will be the case as we head for Italy.ÔÇØ
By scoring its first podium place at the famous ÔÇ£Autodromo Nazionale di MonzaÔÇØ (ITA) in Italy last year, Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport achieved the first major milestone in its still-young history. The city of Monza has 120 000 inhabitants, and is situated 20 kilometres from the centre of Milan.
The Monza circuit is not known only for enormously high top speeds, but also for its long tradition. The race track in the walled ancient Royal Park was opened in 1922. Since then motor-car and -cycle events have been hosted regularly, with no circuit hosting more Formula 1 grands prix than Monza. During its long history, the circuitÔÇÖs layout was remodelled on numerous occasions. The original layout included an oval, which fell into disuse in 1967. However, the remnants of the steeply angled track are still visible today, providing an insight into the circuitÔÇÖs early days.
The character of the ÔÇ£Autodromo Nazionale di MonzaÔÇØ makes it a unique event on the FIM Superbike World Championship calendar. Here it is all about top speed. The long straights are connected by high-speed corners; however, the current layout also includes slow chicanes. Here the brakes of the BMW S 1000 RR are tested to the absolute limit at Monza.
The motorcycle needs to be set up differently to other race tracks, as it needs good manoeuvrability, particularly at slow speeds, while stability under braking from high speeds is paramount. The first chicane is very slow, making it important that riders are able to accelerate cleanly into higher gears. The braking points for both ÔÇ£LesmosÔÇØ corners are equally crucial. In the ÔÇ£ParabolicaÔÇØ riders spend a lot of time on the tyre sidewalls, making ÔÇ£edge gripÔÇØ another important factor to enable maximum speed to be carried into the long main straight.

Yesterday BMW announced strong Q1 earnings for 2011. Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG focused on the automotive segment with his comments in a conference call, while Dr. Friedrich Eichiner, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Finance knows what is important and started his remarks dealing with the Motorr?ñd Segment information.
2011 is the first year that BMW will combine information on BMW and Husqvarna earnings. Sales and production numbers will continue to be reported individually but with out the granularity of individual model sales that have often been included in the past.
BMW continued to buck industry trends for motorcycle sales in the over 500c heavy motorcycle class. Against a world wide industry decline of -4% world wide and -5% in Europe for motorcycles BMW is posting a combined increase of 11.4%. BMW contributed a +10.9% and Husqvarna posted a plus 18.4% in sales for the period. Sales figures for individual countries give a cloudy picture of continental markets. In Europe increases in Germany (+8.3%) and France (+12.7%) were offset by significant declines in the Great Britain (-10.7%), Spain (-18.8%) and Italy (-5.7%). BMW Canada reports motorcycle sales in its monthly release and they have been on the decline. At the same time the quarterly report claims a +3.2% increase for the US market. BMW has won several awards in Japan and had been reporting strong sales there until the earthquake and tsunami. These are being sighted as the reason for a -9.3% decline in sales for the quarter in that market.
If you are an investor it is the money these sales generate that counts. This is where things become a bit muddled. The Motorr?ñd Segment reported revenues of 397 million euro, an increase of 13.1%: however, this yielded a EBIT of 31 million euro a decline of -3.1% and profit before tax of 30 million euro which is unchanged from last year. To understand this result we need to look at a few other numbers.
The Motorr?ñd Segment has been aggressively managing staff and inventory. The staffing level has declined by -0.9% or 35 FTEs despite the increase in sales. Production of BMW motorcycles increased by +7.2% in comparison to the +10.9% increase in sales meaning they have done a good job of inventory control. The significance of this is bigger when you consider the increase in production for the K 1600 models not released in this reporting period.
Against this tight management Husqvarna figures suggest the company is not risk averse. Husqvarna reported a strong sales increase of +18.4% but racked up a production increase +62.4% over the same period last year. This it the result of heavy production and inventory practices of last year combined with ramping up production to fill the pipeline for new model release this model year and next. In industry jargon this is model cycle effect.
The forward looking statements are cautious. The cage dominated company is confident it can meet the projections made in the annual report release earlier. It does caution that model cycle effects will dampen earnings in the second half of the year. Fortunately the Motorr?ñd Segment will have absorbed most of theirs and assuming continued sales increases should be a contributor to the bottom line.
I wondered how log and where the news of BMWÔÇÖs new supplier would cause a rumble when I posted the Business-Standard article last Saturday. The readers of that post either took it in stride or were caught up in the cartoons. It took several days and Asphalt and Rubber picking up and posting the same article for the forum to take note.

The Hero Motors Limited one part of the Hero Group, a 4.7 billion dollar conglomerate which traces its roots back the 1956 founding of the company by the Munial brothers. The vision of Easy Bill Limited is to ÔÇ£Create a brand which offers CONSUMER CONVENIENCE in Bill Payment and reselling of communication services using e-transaction oriented products through a unique POS retail network.ÔÇØ
So what is the big deal?
The Hero Group appears to have the credentials to be able to produce what has been contracted with BMW. What that is remains to be seen. If it is all gearboxes for the company that would be something less than 150,000 units a year for the current BMW line, a new scooter and Husqvarna. The deal could be for just the new scooter or some combination of all. The current press releases and analysis is all over the place in this regard.
Why the fuss?
The short answer is I donÔÇÖt know. In my view the issues in any supplier deal is two fold. First there is the ability of the supplier to produce what has been contracted for and secondly the ability of the purchaser to manage supply and quality control.
For BMW customers the open question is can BMW manage the supply and quality control issues with the products produced for them by Hero Motors Limited. In house ore outsourced that is the daily challenge for any company.

Rea topped FridayÔÇÖs first practice session at Monza with Corser P2 and Badovodini in P3! Haslam was back in P 10 but first practice is not his normal place to show his weekend potential. Toseland is back on track both literally and figuratively. Looking at his timing information he is riding a nice smooth setup. This is encouraging for his return but the times turned in put him in P21.

Monza is a track that favors the nature of the S 1000 RR and CorserÔÇÖs riding style. It is a home track of sorts for Badovini and it is always good to race from home. Haslam should be able to dial the bike in and move up from his current P10. ToselandÔÇÖs stamina after the injury layoff will determine his race weekend.
Good start to what could be a great weekend for the Enigma Cavalry.
Racing Trucks v Sports cars.
Alonso topped a wet first practice session in F1. FridayÔÇÖs second session is going on now. Rain in Turkey put Vettel into the turn 8 wall and others off the track. Speculation is a wet weekend could bring the race to the Ferrari F150s that are dealing with the wet conditions far better than the fragile F1 cars of Red Bull and McLaren.
I will bring you updates on both latter in the day.
Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) put in a superhuman effort on his last flying lap around Monza to take the provisional pole slot away from Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia Racing Team) at the end of Q1 with a time of 1 minute 42.934 seconds. The gap between the two was just 0.019 seconds in favour of Haslam, but Biaggi was able to set a a new record top speed of 332.5 km/h down the long Monza straights.
Third fastest time went to Eugene Laverty (Yamaha World Superbike Team) who got the better of an impressive Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team), the 2010 Superstock 1000 champion entirely in tune with the Monza track. Jonathan Rea followed up his morning form with fifth slot for Castrol Honda, while Noriyuki Haga did a good job for the PATA Racing Team Aprilia to get in front of Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike Team).
Championship leader Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) for the moment is still off the pace of the frontrunners and is languishing down in 14th place for the moment.

Weather conditions: Sunny, with scattered clouds in the afternoon.
Temperature: Air: 24 – 26 ??C, Track: 38 – 44 ??C
Number of riders participating: 22 from 13 teams
Fastest lap Free Practice: Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda) 1:43.712 min
Fastest lap Qualifying Practice 1: Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) 1:42.934 min
Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport holds provisional pole position for the fourth round of the 2011 FIM Superbike World Championship at Monza (ITA). Works rider, Leon Haslam (GBR), set the fastest lap time in the first Qualifying Session, after being on top for most of the time. His team-mate, Troy Corser (AUS), qualified for the second row, finishing eighth, while he was second quickest in the morning.
The BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team also had a good start to this weekend, which marks their first home round of the FIM Superbike World Championship. Italian rider Ayrton Badovini provisionally put his BMW S 1000 RR on the first row, occupying fourth after the first Qualifying Session.
Fastest lap Free Practice: 1:44.303 min (P10)/Fastest lap Qualifying Practice 1: 1:42.934 min (P1)
“It was a very good day, and, of course, you are always happy when you are on top. I feel we have made a big step forward from Assen. Obviously we were always looking forward to Monza as Troy had a good result here last year. The biggest thing I am happy with is that I feel overall we have made a step forward with the bike with the way it is working. Now I am looking forward to tomorrow. We have a few areas where we need to progress, but we are a lot more consistent and I am really happy.”
Fastest lap Free Practice: 1:43.765 min (P2)/Fastest lap Qualifying Practice: 1:43.640 min (P8)
“I am not completely satisfied with today’s result. Although I am provisionally on the second row of the grid, I have the feeling the bike does not a hundred percent do what I want it to. Engine braking is still a little bit of an issue. This morning’s Free Practice session was pretty good, but the track temperature was a lot higher in the afternoon session. This affected the tyre and the way the bike works. We now have to analyse the data. Still, I am optimistic for tomorrow’s second Qualifying Session and Superpole Qualifying.”
Rainer B?ñumel (Head of Race Operations):
“Today was even better than expected. We brought some new improvements, especially with regard to the mapping where we made quite a few changes. To be honest, I expected it to take longer to set up the bike for these improvements. Therefore I am very happy it works so well straight away. With Leon we obviously found the right direction. With Troy in the end we may have chosen a wrong set-up direction, so that is the reason he was not at the very front.
