Hilton Head to Johnson City

We are actually traveling from Texas to the Rally. However, we plan to spend about a week touring the area from Hilton Head to Johnson City. Any recommendations out there of must do's or cities to see?

Well, unless they have had a total change of heart...do not even think of riding a motorcycle on Hilton Head island. They are not at ALL motorcycle friendly. My last experience there was about 6-7 years ago and I decided there was nothing on that island that I needed to see..ever again. I don't think I have ever been treated worse about a being on a motorcycle....

Ditto on the HHI post. I would highly recommend Charleston, SC, but not in July. It's a very neat place, lots of history, and very accessible by bike but you would not enjoy it in the middle of the summer. Instead, go up to Asheville and stop by the Biltmore House if you like being inside huge houses or Ride up US #276 through the Pisgah National Forest to the Pisgah Inn if you like being outside. The highest point of the BRP is a short ride to the south after you have had a good meal.

A Cooler Route . . .

If you travel up Route 17 from I-95 you'll be very near the coast. It will be 10 degrees cooler. Nice road, mostly 4 lane but not as fast as I-95. It will maybe add an hour to your trip north but you will be East of Johnson City.
Good Luck!

You're headed to the 'lowcountry' so don't expect much in the the way of excitement on the roads. But it does have it's own appeal, and parts are very pretty. From Johnson City/Asheville area follow the Savannah River, on the South Carolina side, to Hilton Head.
You will be subjected to very hot and humid weather as well - be prepared. As stated earlier, romping around the Appalachian mountains is hard to beat for fun, and a lot of people are now catering exculsively to the motorcycle rider.
From HHI you could go south to Savannah and the Georgia barrier islands, or north via Beaufort, Charleston, Georgetown to Myrtle Beach. I could give you a few rural routes around here that are quite fun.
Please let me know if you need a resting place - I've got plenty of space. I will however, be at the MOA rally and in the mountains for the week following.

Yes the mountains are MUCH more fun as far as riding and if you get around the high part of the BRP it is about 15 deg cooler due to elevation. Of course your could come to the Klassic K Kampout the weekend before the MOA.

Sounds like you won't make it this year. Mark
