June Road Trip from N Ga to the UP

Time for another 5-6K mi trip and the UP is the destination. Leaving from Hiawassee GA and wanting to take as many of the great roads as possible and stay off of the interstates.

Anyone have any routes they love and care to share? Also, any "gotta" sees or places to stay/eat while in the UP?

Somewhat planning rolling up the west coast of MI into the UP and then heading back home through WI.

Appreciate any thoughts and feedback!

John

hon - i wrote an article a couple of years ago that served to guide people from the southeast up to wisconsin. that's one way to the UP...

http://www.bmwmoa.org/rally/rally07/gettingthere_SE.htm

i've attached the GPS routes (Garmin only), if that's any help.

for that rally, i *had* a ride planned through along the western shore of michigan, which would take me across the mackinac bridge to the UP. but i wound up having to fly to the rally because of workload.

also, many moons ago, we had a rally in midland, michigan, and a member put together some really nice rides through the UP.

they are still up on our site, but on dark pages (no longer linked...) and the pictures are missing. but there is still good info there:

(these last two have some good rides through the lower peninsula of MI)

Just throwing some ideas your way - not so much routes.

A ferry ride across Michigan would be a nice diversion. You might not want to cut into the ride though- http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/travel/water/ferries.htm

On the Wisconsin side you may consider Door county (NE of Green Bay). It's a bit touristy, but still has it's charms. Peninsula state park is nice and has camping (which could already be booked). A ferry ride to Washington island is always nice and you can take the bike. Not a lot of territory to explore there, but still fun.

Tons of Deer up there (UP and northern WI) and not a lot of open grass between the trees and the road so be careful - they come out of nowhere fast. Lots of speed enforcement as well.

Feel free to PM me for ant specifics on Wisconsin. I get around the state and know it pretty well.

Make a point to stop at Tahquamenon falls near White Fish Point. White Fish Point, for that matter, is a good visit as well.
Also, Pictured Rock National Lakeshore between Marquette and Munising is nice.
These are both on the East/Central part of the UP.
On the West side, the Porcupine Mnts. are worth traveling through.

There's some nice riding on the Keweenah (spelling?) Pensinsula north of Houghton, MI, where the RA rally was last year. Also, remember to pack your Gerbings. It can be downright chilly up there near Lake Superior even in June. Last year, we had a couple of days it did not get above 50??F towards the end of June.

Northern Lower MI

If you head up The West side of lower MI be sure to catch M22 North at around Manistee. It'll take you on a great ride along the coast up through Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes to the tip of Leelanau County and around back to TC. Head North on US31 from Traverse City through Chalevoix and Petoskey and catch M119 which will take you through Harbor Springs and then on to the "tunnel of trees" with a must stop in Cross Village for lunch or dinner at the Leggs Inn ( http://www.legsinn.com/ ) and then on to the bridge. This is one of my favorite rides. :clap

+1 on the ride north of Houghton. We stopped at a nice restaraunt on the point of copper harbor.Great road and scenery. Also read of some sea caves in the area that you can explore, but do not remember the name of the town-but hey i've slept since then. Ed
