Montana Ghost Town

Rather than sending you to the link in my blog, I'll post some of my favorite pictures of a ghost town I went to 2 days ago. I wasn't trying as hard as usual to take 'amazing' pictures, because 1) I had a point and shoot, and 2) I was in a hurry to see everything in this place before the huge storm rolled in.

Great shots, whether you were trying hard or not!

I may be wrong but I think I can see a ghost sitting in that barber chair!:bottle

I like the bird on the chimney of the Masonic Temple, think she knows itÔÇÖs a ghost town?

Let's see, I don't recall brick buildings in Garnet, so these must be from a visit to Bannack, once the territorial capital of Montana. Were you dirt riding? There are some great roads from there into Idaho.

Thanks for posting these. There's not a photo in the set that I don't like. Your point-n-shoot served you well. Great lighting and composition.

These remind me a great deal of the ghost town of Bodie here in California. Interesting that they would appear so similar being so far away from each other and in different climates.

Great shots!

Ding ding! The secrets out. :p

If I took my bike, I'd definitely sneak it up to some of those buildings for some really self-absorbed pics. :D Unfortunately, I took a rental car there.. but I got into the park free because of the Montana plates on the car.

Great work. Thanks for posting. Wonder what all stories this ghost town could tell?

Richard

Dude,
Wonderful images! I can only imagine the results if you were trying to take "amazing pics".

Any more history about the place? Seems like all the fallen plaster has been cleaned up! Who owns the site and maintains it? Not trying to pressure, I just love this kind of stuff!

It's a state park. There is a staffed (at least sometimes) bldg with park personnel onsite. It seems they have preserved the bldgs for the most part against the weather. You can enter most bldgs and explore them. School, Church, Hotel, Jail and many more. I enjoy them because they are not restored museum pieces that can only be viewed through the windows.

It consists primarily of the main street of the town with more bldgs away from the main street. Plus there is a gallows and cemetery up on the hill. When I was there a few years ago, there were warnings to keep your eyes open for rattlesnakes and boardwalks throughout most of the area in order to avoid walking on the ground. It was the first capitol of the Montana Territory although only for some months before Virginia City nearby became the capitol.

there is an entry at wikipedia...

There are a few books on this subject. One aptly titled Ghost Towns of the Old West.

Just google it... Many towns like this abandoned that you can walk through. No park, no owner, abandoned.
Pretty cool stuff and pretty spooky when you camp in an old building.

Bannack

Thanks Nathan. We're heading out that way next month, so we might have to give that a look. Is that a gravel road going in there?

Nice Work!

Nathan:

I wouldn't trivialize your work hear as just point and click. The secret to good photography is often in the view finder, what's left in and what's left out.

Nice composition here, regardless what camera you used.

Nice work!

Ah, he's just being humble. He knows how good they are! :kiss
