Anyone else have problems with elf pegs?

I have a 2002 1150RT and wanted something to put my feet on to stretch out on long rides. I bought some elf pegs from BOB's and they bore a hole through my valve cover where the bolt holds them on. I noticed the bike was leaking oil onto my boot. I brought the bike to my Dealer and he took off the valve cover and you could see where the bolt came right through. They suggested I take them off and not use them. Now I'm getting ready to ride the the MOA rally in WY and I'd like to try putting some sort of metal sleave in the space in the cover where the bolt fits in. Otherwise I don't want to risk having an oil leak on this long of a trip. I'm wondering what anyone elses experience with these pegs is?
Any advice would be apreciated.

The manufacturer should help you with this if you used their mounting hardware.

I self-installed ELF-Pegs on my '05 R1200RT.

The four hex-bolts 'pinch' a sleeve onto part of the cylinder head structure. No bolt actually touches the cylinder wall itself, so I cannot penetrate the magnesium with aggressive tightening.

Perhaps the design of the pegs for your older RT was less 'cylinder-friendly.'

Good Luck!

Pictures

Do you have a picture of your elf pegs as they were installed?

I looked at the picture and I do not see where any holes are used to mount them. They normally clamp onto the valve cover.

I rode a bike with them one and did not like them, too weak.

I choose these brackets from AS Cycles instead and modified.

Here is a link to my project with the modified highway pegs place on the bottom of the valve covers.

There is no sleeve on my on the end of the bolts that tighten into the holes of the valve cover. the bolt actually went through the metal in the cover. I have the damaged one and you can see a hole right through it.I'll call BOBs where I purchased them and see if they have some sort of sleeve. I agree that they are not very strong but give you a place to stretch your legs a bit. Im gonna look into RJM2096 post and see what they've come up with.
Thanks for the help

I called Bobs today and they said there wasn't supposed to be any sleeve for the bolt to push against. I don't trust the way its set up now so I'm trying to bend (fit ) some sort of small metal piece into the hole before I tighten the bolts. My 1st couple of attempts wasn't very sucessful. Either the metal was too soft or too hard.

Like RJM2096 said, my style 'clamps' onto the cylinder head, and nothing endangers the metal wall.

I think Bobs is referring to YOUR style and year of pegs.

Good Luck!

I use these on my R-1150-RT www.hawksproducts.com and while at the RA Rally last week I noticed many bikes with them. 2800 miles in six days with no problems. Good luck:thumb

I have them on my 05 RT, and love them. They offer a temporary break for a leg stretch for guys like me who have knee replacements, without changing the integrity of the valve cover.....they are very stable. Highly recommended. :thumb

Hi HLothery: I think you mean you have the Talons not the Elf Pegs.

The Talons are a good design. Do you know if they can be moved to the bottom of the valve cover? I like my feet out lower.

Yes, I do mean the Talons....sorry I was not clear on that. I, indeed, have mine mounted on the bottom bolts and they do very well there.
