I rode my BMW R100 GS on the "thumper dual sport route" of the Spring "Ride 4 Research".
The Wabeno event also has an Adventure Ride which runs you on 230 miles
of hard packed gravel and sugar sand forest roads, some fine two track and paved roads.

R4R is on the AMA - KTM National Dual Sport Trail Riding Series and the AMA - BMW National Adventure Riding Series.
The roster of bikes were a split of KTM and Japanese bikes mostly under 500 cc.

When Dale and I arrived at R4R, first job was to set up the tent and do the sound check.

The next item on the agenda was to go to the Farm and sign-up for the test ride on the KTM.
A track was set up for open field ride and another track for hero section ride.
Dale rode the EXC 250 and I rode the 450 on the hero. I left my camera on my BMW, a totally missed photo op.

KTM also had a 990 Adventure to ride

The ride from the Wabeno Camp to the KTM Farm was on a 3 mile Rail to Trail.
The trail went over a bridge or two and past some nice ponds,

Pictured above is my R100GS clean and before I changed the wheel set to the full knobbies.

Friday night had us checking out the bikes and talking dual sport.
Shortly after sunset we grabbed some beer
and went downtown to the bandshell to listen to some classic 70 and 80's music.
We were starving, so the choice was a Wisconsin tavern Fish Fry
or 2 buck brat and burgers.
We passed on the fish fry and had Wabeno Fireman's burgers.

The following photos were taken Saturday morning before the Rider Meeting.

September 2008: Big Woods 200
Northwoods hospitality and great riding in the Nicolet National Forest

Location: Wabeno, WI. Southeast of Crandon in Forest County.
About 90 miles northwest of Green Bay.

200 Mile -- 2 Day Dual Sport ride in the heart of the Nicolet National Forest.

Self-guided route sheets for Friday;:thumb
Saturday loop will cover about 150 miles,:thumb
Sunday will be about 100. Mix of woods/ATV trails/Jeep track/USFS roads, and a few paved roads.
Optional Hero Sections are single-track enduro trail loops.
Gas is available every 60-70 miles at local gas stations.
Much of the trail is out in the boonies, so bring your GPS and cell phone.

Don't forget a camera,
and although it seldom rains for more than 90 percent of the ride, bring rain gear.

Jim, Dale and I had a great time doing the Thumper route. Just skip the single track hero sections and it's completly doable on the 950 Adventure or BMW GS. I had a ball!!

Great pics Jim. Looks like they where worth all the waiting after all.

Thanks to Wisconsin Dual Sport Rider for putting on a great event!

I'm back! :clap I didn't win the DRZ:cry I did take home a couple gift certificates, a new tank bag, some grips, coozies, some t-shirts, a sweatshirt, and a wind up flashlight radio.

I came in absolutely last in the the poker run and the scavenger hunt.

We raised around $13800 for cancer research and had a great time doing it!

I rode the Adventure route on Saturday, 237 miles of excellent roads and trails..... and then there was some soft sand and some nice muddy stretches thrown in too. I did a pretty fair job of keeping the rubber side down (and sideways), and did a pretty good number on my ankle trying to do so, which kept me at the fairgrounds Sunday.

Thanks to Little John, the WDSR and every warm body that made this ride yet another success!

Anyone get video of the "extra" entertainment Friday night?

My first of many photo stops.
Trillion trillium, they were in full bloom

Randy and Dale kept wondering what took me so long.

Lily pond we traveled by twice.
The second time I stopped as this weeks Photo Assignment was "Reflections"

Once I caught up with Randy and Dale, I asked Randy what time dinner was.
Randy jokingly responded with a "keep taking photos, and we will not get any dinner"

The Ride Home

The 2008 R4R Wabeno Dual Sport Run was a great event. And it was part of a charity in which we gave much money. The weather was good. I did not hurt myself. Nice ride up and a great ride back.

The ride back, I took the Rail to Trail Route to Carter.
About a mile or two is this old RR bridge that is always a photo op.

From Carter I rode the Diamond Roof Gravel road through the Nicolet National Forest.

Above: Miss Rockstar Energy Drink autographing a poster.

Below: 944.com, never heard of that magazine before seeing the promo on the side of this truck. I bet this truck turns heads as it goes down the road,

My little point and shot camera is not much for race track photography, but was fine in the infield and pits. The Racing was great.

Road America is set up with the race fan viewing in mind. Watch one race on turn 5, then next race on turn 8 or 9. This track is set up for race fan dual sport riding, complete with many hills.

That is it for the AMA Superbike races. A few weeks later the ASRA Pro Series Races came to Road America. The ASRA Pro Series races have almost as many racers as spectators ;)
