Assuming the weather is somewhere around 50 and dry, I'm headed to Sabula, Iowa for some of the best homemade pie in the area. Anyone interested in joining me? When - November 17, 2007 at noon. Where - Island City Cafe, Sabula, Iowa (just southwest of Galena, IL).

As of now there are 3 hardy (crazy?) people going to Iowa for pie on Saturday. We are meeting at the Elk in Elkhorn (on the Town Square) at 7:30am for breakfast and hope to be back before dark. Anybody else interested?

How was the ride to Sabula? The pie?

I rode through Sabula about a year ago, when I was doing a story for Road Runner magazine (published August 2007). A long time ago, when I was teaching at Loras College, Dubuque, I took my photojournalism class to Sabula to do a "Day in the Life" photo project. It was a great experience for the class.

Thanks for reminding me of Sabula, Iowa's only island city.
