Post a pic of your Airhead

Nice, BoxBoy100. I wish that I had snow tires.

tuff crowd LOL

Depending on what year it is, not all /5's had battery covers. I don't think I've ever seen a /5 with the newer valve covers and now I know why :laugh

Don't pay too much attention to us here in the peanut gallery. All of our bikes are a little different too.

i knew the latter valve covers would get a rise but what the hell it made her mine;)
appreciate all the input, i am learning a ton... i thought those were the standard euro bars? am i mistaken?

I love my ST, it is nimble and a hoot to ride. It just feels right. Have not had it very long, but I seem to reach for the key as much as I can. Show some pics of your ST. We might be clones in a couple of months. I have a black R100GS tank and some other neat parts still to go on... but I really like the look and feel of it right now. But if I plan on doing some touring with it I will need to heavy it up with bags etc..

How are U likeing your ST. Got one just like it. The only time I road it was right before I bought, maybe 8 or so years ago. Pulled the heads off and did a top end. Sent my speedo off and got it fixed. Been sitting ever since. I have accumulated a few more parts. Bigger R100GS tank and and PD solo seat, bags, mounts and rack Bike looks like a blast to ride, can't wait to get it back together and ride it.

The roads are dry enough and the temperature was in the low thirties. I got out this afternoon and decided to visit the same roadside that I had stopped on in January. I tried to take the same photo shots as I did then from memory and got kinda close. I wanted to document the changes that I have made this year on this RT. This is on State Line Road just north of Hebron IL

R90s

My son took this picture of my 1974 R90S last summer. Unrestored and still a good runner.

Let's go ride

New heated grips and grip guards are fantastic on a 30 year old. Although given the temperature hit nearly 50 yesterday in Chicago I feel like a bit of a poser. Colder weather is coming and as long as the roads aren't icy...let's go ride!

Yep. The paint is original. The whole bike is original other than a few goodies. It has a fork stiffener kit, a thicker steering head plate, braided steel brake lines, bar backs, a brown's side stand and two years ago I installed a Parabellum windscreen that works better on longer rides.

The red/black smoke paint scheme on the RS is my favorite airhead of that era. It's a great ride. It gets a lot of attention and even disbelief that it is a 1982 motorcycle. The RS fairing design is a timeless classic that still holds up today IMO.

thanks for the reply.
I've inquired to some RS owners about the bar backs, got mixed reaction. some say it's not the right thing to do on this bike, others really like the more relaxed riding position, your thoughts?

also, did you have to change cables to accomodate the bar backs?

Thanks,
'
Bert

I understand the purist position but I find the bar backs work well for me. They only go up 1" and 1 1/2" back but it is just enough for me to sit slightly less bent forward and the increase in comfort is substantial. My head is up straighter and my neck bent less to see forward and stay more relaxed on the bars. The RS tends to make your palms sore from leaning forward on long rides and the bar backs alleviate this quite a bit.

I did not have to change any cables but I did have to remove the foam handle bar cover and the steering dampener knob and shaft. This was not a big deal to me since I never changed the setting anyway. I've kept all the original parts in any case.

I was about to ask how you did that keeping the 'dash' pad because mine would no longer fit with bar backs. Now I know - the 'before' pictures. I was able to keep my damper shaft since it just clears the bars - but the knob had to go.

I absolutely agree on the paint scheme. If I didn't have a Motorsport, it would have to be a 'Red Smoke' RS. Twenty-plus years ago, before I had an RS (or any BMW bike), I built a model of one - in Red Smoke. :thumb

Here's mine

It's got a couple scratches, a few scuffs, 17k on it but it makes me smile every time I ride it :).
