Rotax
Is one very fine outfit and has a solid reputation for building Aircraft enines along with many other configured engines, including the BMW F650, especially the early ones. BMW/Rotax became a team effort in the bike phenom in the mid '90's F650 projects. Rotax supplied the engines. Aprilla of Italy was involved in the bike somewhere along the line also, maybe building the early ones for BMW. BMW's first chain bike was a bit of a shock in BMW circles, I figure and the F bikes were a "farmed out" of house thing in the begining. A m/c market phenom, not much done in the past. BMW saw sales, in a favorable fashion for F650's and brought the bike home to Germany, with their brand stamped all over the engines, etcetc., with some German design engine mods. The F650 took off early, with the carbed models, stampeding the way and Rotax engines. The injected ones followed, with very favorable mpgs, performance improvements and so on. Now, the model seems to fade away, for smaller F650 toys of less "touring" minded folks, argggg! What happened? Of course a much talked F800 is somewhere in the future, but if it has no touring abilities(like the new 650's), without bag options for the serious tourer, who cares about it! I do not! We'll see. Has anyone ever wondered why the BMW market share is always a firm 5%, or around there(always)? I don't think its improved, at least in any giant fashion, in my lifetime. I don't guess it really matters much, as I like my very individual feel of riding a bike of less seen out there. I feel special. But, BMW has been changing so much, with models coming and going every 10+ years. I liked the Airhead run of 70+ years, of which I saw only the last 35, but it was cool, knowing a design had such a strong history. The market share for BMW is not going to change, because they do not want it to, imo.. The young folks are going to buy the biggest bang for their bucks at Japanese stores and who blames them. I try to buy the biggest bang for mine, too. Used Beemers! Randy13233 PS; Rotax rules, baby as a very strong player and BMW wishes it had it first! I'll bet they've had talks about mergers, no doubt...
