planning for trip with Helge Pederson from Shanghai to Munich in 2004

I have stuff to wear, like all of you. I have stuff to take on a camping trip, like all of you. But I seem to have lot's of stuff and also stuff that is too old and useless.

What would you folks take on a trip that lasts 65 days, travels thru Siberia ( no laundry facilities ) and no place to buy stuff.

I would like to make a list of things to take along and I could use your imput just in case I forget something.

Clothing : Microfiber pants ( no Jeans )
Microfiber shirts ( easy dry and wash in sink/river )
Shoes ? Underwear ? how many ? socks ? etc, etc.

Spare parts: ? What are best bags ? packing system ?

What kind of tent? I right now have a Moss tent, good but takes time to put up and is heavy.

Any kind of suggestions would be appreciated from any and all of you.

Yes, of course I can ask Helge but this is much more fun.

Please advise

Thanks

Hans

I could give you a few tips, but I'm sure there are more experienced people on this forum that will.

My question is: will the portion of the tour through China be unescorted? I realize that Helge will be leading the tour, but will he be leading it without the escort of a Chinese official?

So far, every person that has driven there stated that foreigners must be escorted. I am waiting for the day all that is dropped...in all countries that now employ that policy.

Just out of curiousity, what will that tour run you $. Does that include airfare, shipping of your motorcycle?

will be a group effort

Dave,
The bike is a 2002 Adventure mostly stock but some add on's like extra light and Oehlin shocks and remove the catalyptic converter because of low octance gas.

Alex,

Yes, it will be in a group and Helge is not cheap.
You can look up the trip under Globeriders.com

Money is listed there, too and explanations of shipping bike etc.

Short here is about 18 K will include ship to Shanghai, Escourt in China, Backup vehicle, Paper work, etc.
Not included is fly to Shanghai and once in Munich, trip back to NY.

but again, best to look up Globeriders.com

I hope this helps

I take it that is $18,000 in US dollars? Yikes...and it doesn't even include airfare! I am definitely in the wrong business.

Thanks for the info. I hope by the time I retire, things will have lightened up in China and I can tour there without the need of an escort.

Where are you from originally?

before I die

Alex,

yes, it is a lot of money but how often do I take a trip like this before I get too old to go. I am 56
Yes, it is US $ and I was born in Krefeld, Germany.

Hallo Hans,

Hey, thats not old. One of my flying students from the early 80s bought his first motorcycle in 1991 at the age of 54. He then travelled every continent between the ages of 60 and 65, and I'm sure he isn't finished yet.

You may have read some of his books that are listed by Whitehorse Press - Author Werner Bausenhart. He is from Ulm originally.
Krefeld! I thought that sounded familiar. I fly into D??sseldorf every year for my annual tours...and beer...and good food...and great riding...and:bliss

I know what you mean. This is living....

All is indeed well.

Hans,

I'm in awe when I read of the trips that other riders have taken, especially when I can barely get away for a Sunday afternoon. Your upcoming trip to China, borders on beyond the imagination for most of us.

Riding lonely highways is one of my greatest pleasures in life, yet I've spent most of my life "taking care of business" to the point where I've almost forgot how to take time off for pleasure. Just turning 61, I'm thinking I'd better find time before time runs out.

Will you be submitting your trip progress with Horizon's Unlimited?

Don
