If If you are crossing from Dubuque into Wisconsin
and you would like to get a piece of lead mining history,

Father Samuel Mazzuchelli.
Erected in 1844, this weather-beaten Greco-Gothic church has withstood the battering of time.

Now being restored by the Father Mazzuchelli Assembly of the Knights of Columbus of Lancaster, Wisconsin,
it has created interest throughout the country.
The building is open on Sundays from 1 to 4 pm,

1857
Mazomanie Railroad Depot
Oldest Wooden Depot in the Midwest.

1857, the year the Milwaukee & Mississippi Railroad Company arrived from Milwaukee,
platted Mazomanie, and continued its drive to Prairie du Chien
to create the first rail connection between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River system.
Think about it. What a big deal that must have been!

Mazomanie, WI
The slow growth experienced by the village has resulted in remarkably well preserved buildings dating back to the 1850's.
Thirty-four of the commercial buildings in the downtown have been named to the National Register of Historic Places.

As you are riding across the state from the West,
the Devils Lake State Park area is a must see.
Baraboo has Circus World Museum,
and outside of Town is the Wooping Crane Center which is a very worthy cause to tour

"Sauk County boasts Parfey's Glen Natural Area,
a part of Devil's Lake State Park,
one of the continent's most beautiful spots, with rock formations and a glacial lake.
The Nature Conservancy designated the Baraboo Bluffs region as one of its
"Last Great Places" by virtue of unique rocks, plants and animals.
Organic herb and vegetable farms and quaint towns dot the region."
USA Today

Sauk County's, Baraboo, surrounded by the picturesque and historic Baraboo Range.
Composed of Precambrian quartzite, the Baraboo Range is an international geological landmark.
The Nature Conservancy has designated the Baraboo Range as one of the last great places on earth.
The scenic beauty of the Baraboo Range can be enjoyed through the public access offered at Devil's Lake State Park.
Note; you can drive thru the park for free. but if you stop, you must have a yearly park sticker.

"Baraboo's historic downtown for a short walk around the courthouse square.
The square also offers architectural marvels in both the Historic Courthouse and the Al. Ringling Theater,
both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The 102 year old courthouse was built in the "classic" style with Indiana limestone, Ionic pilasters and a terracotta roof.
It was a departure from the typical Midwestern courthouse in both appearance and manner of construction.

Dubbed the "Prettiest Playhouse in America," the Al. Ringling Theater is a treasure of rare quality.

Circus World Museum is another unique cultural and historical experience.
Located at the site of the original Ringling Brothers winter quarters,
Circus World offers delights for the entire family.
Offerings include live Big Top performances and the KidsWorld Circus,
circus wagon displays, exotic animal rides, a grand carousel, a petting menagerie and band organ concerts.
A circus wagon collection of over 200 vehicles at the Circus World Museum." Wisconsin Portal

Churches & Farms

Old Catholic Churches are going the way of the Wisconsin Barns.
Most churches are not recorded (and protected) as Historic Places,
and in this area of Wisconsin four churches were torn down as I rode by last summer .
Some of the reason for the losses, Parishes were combined, and some churches just got replaced with larger buildings.
