Minnesota's North Shore Scenic Drive

191942093-XL-1.jpg

The North Shore Scenic Drive is an All-American Road that follows Highway 61 from Duluth, Minnesota to the Canadian border near Grand Portage. The route stays close to the rocky North Shore of Lake Superior, offering spectacular vistas of the lake to the southeast as it runs along along the foothills of the Sawtooth Range to the northwest.

National Scenic Byway is a road recognized by the United States Department of Transportation for its archaeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational, and/or scenic qualities.

The most scenic of the roads in the program are designated All-American Roads. The designation means they have features that do not exist elsewhere in the United States and are scenic enough to be tourist destinations unto themselves. There are 99 National Scenic Byways and 27 All-American Roads, Minnesota has 7 scenic American byways.

The North Shore is the only Upper Midwest(from the West's Rockies to the Ohio Valley in the East) All American Scenic Byway. Enjoy eight state parks and the Superior National Forest.

For the 200 miles North Shore Byway, it will take about 4 hours to drive. Barb, Buddy and I took one week to enjoy the area.

The Minnesota's Arrowhead Region, located in the northeastern part of the State, received it's name because of its pointed shape.

The Arrowhead Region can be rugged and has hundreds of lakes, rivers and waterfalls. The Arrowhead is home to Voyageurs National Park, the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area, the Superior Hiking Trail, the Superior National Forest. Also located in the Arrowhead is Minnesota's only mountain range, the Sawtooth Mountains. For these reasons, a large portion of the economy depends on tourism. This region is a very common vacation destination for residents of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul. Most tourist I talked to were from the Twin Cities.
