Eisenbahn State Trail
This county-operated 25-mile hiking trail passes through the communities
of Eden, Campbellsport, Kewaskum and West Bend.
Wisconsin has more Rail to Trail Miles than most States.

Wisconsin has 42 state trails totaling more than 1,650 miles.

"No matter where you live in Wisconsin
somewhere nearby is a woods or a prairie to walk in,
a stream or a marsh to paddle in,
a lake to fish in,
a hill to climb,
a trail to bike.

The natural world seems always just outside the door and up the street."

"The West Bend Co., maker of cookware and gadgets, takes its name from the largest city in the county.

West Bend was settled in the 1840s, and its location halfway between Milwaukee and Fond du Lac made it an early traveler's haven.

A dam and a sawmill were built in 1846, and two years later, a gristmill was added.

The city's first tavern opened in 1849, and the Washington House, one of the largest and finest hotels in the state at the time, was constructed in 1864.

In the 1850s, West Bend became the Washington County seat after a ferocious battle with Port Washington that ended up with the Legislature splitting the county in half, leading to the formation of Ozaukee County.

In 1873, the railroad arrived in the bustling city, and from the railroad came new prosperity. With water and rail and eager workers, the city became home to Enger Kress Leather Goods, Gehl Manufacturing and West Bend Aluminum Co.

Historic Cedarburg, Wisconsin
"The Cedarburg Mill was built by Cedarburg founders Frederick Hilgen and William Schroeder in 1855 at a cost of $22,000 and was considered one of the finest mills in the midwest. The lower walls are 32 inches thick. The design is Greek revival. The clearstory and monitor roof were popular with eastern mills at the time since they added light and ventilation. This building replaced an earlier one built by Hilgen and Schroeder in 1844. Note that the main part of the building is 5 stories high. The section to the left is of the same style as the main section, but is not as high. an incline several blocks long was built to carry material to the upper levels. A donkey was used to pull the heavy stone blocks up this incline. A dam was built nearby to provide power for the mill. The mill continued to operate until just a few years ago, but now is the home of Landmark Supply Co., a seller of pet supplies and foods. Hilgen and Schroeder owned a mill store across the street from their mill. That store served as the retail outlet for the flour and feed produced by them." Ozaukee County Website

Silver Creek Brewing Company

located in the Mill's lower level.
You have to walk around and behind the building to get to the brew pub and outdoor beer garden.
The Beer Garden is next to the dam/waterfall.

Historic Cedarburg, Wisconsin

Visiting Cedarburg is like going back 150 years,
for many of the limestone and cream city brick buildings from that time remain the same.
Cedarburg, city of 11,386
has a main street listed with over 100 Historic buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.

Since the 1840's,
the source of Cedarburg's growth has been Cedar Creek,
along it's banks immigrants built five dams and mills

Two Cedarburg area quarries provided the limestone
used to build many of the mills, churches & homes that have survived the test of time.
